Introducing: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Direct instruction in English, by one of three specialists, is provided upon entry for students who do not
meet the benchmark for their grade level (grades 1-8). The goal of this instruction is to help the student
meet the benchmark for his/her grade level in English to allow the student to access the curriculum. This
instruction can be from 30 minutes a week to 30-55 minutes a day depending on the grade level and
English level of the student. This instruction will not provide all the academic language that a child needs
in English, but the ESOL teachers work in concert with the classroom teachers. Sometimes parents will
need to provide additional support outside of school so that the child can more rapidly master English
and develop confidence in the academic language of English. This is especially true for students from
grades four to eight.
During this academic year, we have served 57 students who were below benchmark on entering the
school throughout the year. As of the first of April, twenty-eight students have been able to acquire a lot
of English and have met the benchmark for their grade level. When this occurs they are no longer
receiving direct instruction from the ESOL teacher, but the ESOL teachers work with the classroom
teachers to continue their English language development.
This support is an important part of our school and we are happy to see our students grow in their
English language development.

Introduzindo: Inglês para falantes de outras linguas (ESOL)
A instrução direta em inglês, feita por um dos três especialistas, é fornecida na entrada dos estudantes
que não alcançem o critério para o nível de sua série (da 1ª à 8ª). O objetivo desta instrução é ajudar o
aluno atingir o indicador permitindo, assim, o aluno acessar o currículo. Esta instrução pode durar entre
30 minutos por semana e 30-55 minutos por dia dependendo da série e do nível de inglês do aluno. Esta
instrução não fornecerá toda a linguagem acadêmica que uma criança precisa, mas os professores do
ESOL trabalham em conjunto com os de sala de aula. Às vezes os pais precisarão fornecer suporte
adicional fora da escola para que a criança possa, mais rapidamente, dominar a língua e desenvolver
confiança no inglês acadêmico. Isto é especialmente válido para os alunos entre a 4ª e a 8ª séries.
Durante este ano letivo servimos 57 alunos que estavam abaixo do critério ao entrar na escola. No início
do mês de abril vinte e oito alunos foram capazes de adquirir inglês suficiente e alcançar o indicador.
Quando isso ocorre, que eles não mais recebem instrução direta do professor de ESOL, que comtinuam
trabalham com os professores de sala para assegurar o desenvolvimento da língua inglesa.
Este suporte é uma parte importante em nossa escola e estamos felizes em ver nossos alunos
desenvolvendo suas habilidades com a língua inglesa.
