CENTER FOR NEUROSCIENCE AND CELL BIOLOGY University of Coimbra “Programa Doutoral em Biologia Experimental e Biomedicina” (PDBEB) Guiding Lines 1. Each year, twelve (12) students are selected to the PDBEB (http://cnc.cj.uc.pt/BEB/) based on two evaluation steps. The first includes the analysis of their CVs and referees’ evaluations. The second is based on an interview of candidates selected in the first step. The students receive a four-year scholarship from FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), which is regulated by the “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica” (http://www.fct.mces.pt/pt/apoios/bolsas/estatutodobolseiro/). The programme does not support travel and accommodation expenses for attending the interview. 2. The Ph.D. degree is awarded by the University of Coimbra, according to the “Regulamento dos Doutoramentos pela Universidade de Coimbra” (Diário da República, 2ª série, aviso n.º 8260/2003, de 17 de Julho de 2003). The students apply to one of the faculties, namely Sciences and Technology, Pharmacy or Medicine, through their local supervisor at the University. Students admitted to the Faculty of Sciences and Technology may have the courses credited in their University record. 3. Foreign students admitted to the PDBEB must develop the Ph.D. project at portuguese laboratories, according to the rules of FCT scholarships (http://www.fct.mces.pt/pt/apoios/formacao/regulamento/). 4. During the first year the students have to complete the course and seminar programme organized by the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC, http://www.uc.pt/cnc/), at the University of Coimbra. After the courses, there will be two months for students to become familiar with work at laboratories at CNC. All students must attend an annual meeting organized by CNC. 5. The students will have a supervisor at the University of Coimbra and an external supervisor, usually from abroad, who will guide them in preparing the Ph.D. project, until the end of June. It is highly recommended that the projects involve collaboration between a laboratory at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and an institute/laboratory abroad. 6. Full-time commitment is expected during the four years of the PDBEB. In case of non attendance at any activity, written justification is mandatory. 7. The affiliation of the students in articles, thesis or attendance to conferences must include the reference to the PDBEB, Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. 8. The organizing committee of PDBEB has the final decision on any question that is not covered by the present rules, and all its recommendations and decisions should be strictly followed.
