ACADEMIC MANAGEMENT As Professor at the Civil Engineering Department he has carried out Intensive academic management activity. In this context, as Head of the Civil Engineering Department he was responsible for the management of a department with 130 people (academic and non-academic staff) and an annual budget in excess of 5 M€. As Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCTUC), he was responsible foi responsible for the business sector of FCTUC (that includes 20 non-profit companies), as well as the management of the R&D support department of FCTUC. The more relevant activities are listed below: - Vice-Dean of the Directive Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (June 2004 to April 2008). 1 - Vice-Dean of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (July 2004 to October 2005). - Head of Departament of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (2001 to 2003 and 2005 to 2007). - President of the Scientific Committee of the Departament of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (September 2003 to November 2006). Vice-President of the Scientific Committee from April 1994 to December 1994 and from November 2000 to December 2002. - Director of the Doctoral Program and Advanced Master Course in Sustainable Steel Construction, Departament of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra. - Member of the Board of iParque – Parque Tecnológico de Coimbra, since 2009. Since September 2007 he is responsible for all the technical activities of ECCS (Chairman of Technical Management Board), coordinating the work of 387 experts in the field of steel construction. Member of a dozen scientific and professional organizations. He served as elected member in several of these organizations since 1992. IV. BUSINESS ACTIVITY From 1990 to 2004 he developed intense activity in civil engineering design and consultancy as Technical Director of GIPAC and GIPAMB, that he founded. In 1990, he created one of the first Portuguese companies aimed at developing computer programs for Civil Engineering that had a significant market share during the 1990’s. He developed over a dozen structural engineering softwares As Technical Director of GIPAC/GIPAMB (1990-2006) he was responsible for over 150 engineering projects. He developed, since 1989, structural design of buildings, bridges, hydoelectric power plants and wind farms. From 1996 to 2004 he promoted the development of wind farms in Portugal, having licensed 8 wind farms. Currently he is responsible for the development of modular and industrialised construction in the framework of COOLHAVEN SA (www.cool-haven.com). V. TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND PUBLICATIONS In the framework of his scientific activity in the field of Steel Construction he is responsible for a research group of 50 researchers. He manages directly (scientifically and financially) a significant number of Portuguese and European R&D projects, corresponding to a contractual turnover of over 12 M€. He is one of the top researchers at European level in the field of Steel Construction. Since 1982, when he joined the staff of the University of Coimbra, he has been teaching in Doctoral, MSc and BSc programs, mostly focussing on Structural Engineering.
