Its main objectives are to promote innovation, facilitating the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge in close collaboration with the business and social network and supporting the creation of start‐ups, to contribute for advanced training and to collaborate on strategies for regional and international development. The strategic program of the Unit is developed under the theme "Develop and Apply knowledge and Technology to Improve Mobility" in order to perform advanced research in mechanical engineering in its modern sense in which complementary knowledge areas intersect, to arrive at appropriate solutions so as to face new challenges posed by mobility. Thus, the strategic program of the Unit contains four strategic pillars, namely: 1. 2. 3. 4. Mechanical Engineering & Mining/Raw materials; Materials’ Contacts, Surfaces and Interfaces; Advanced Materials, Technologies & Structures for Health; Green Vehicles. CEMUC is organized into seven groups with different expertise, which are essential to successfully carry out research on the strategic lines: 1. Advanced manufacturing systems; 2. Nanomaterials & micromanufacturing; https://cemuc.dem.uc.pt/MPMM2014/ 1/2 09/09/2015 MPMM 2014 Home Page 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Sensors and nanoelectrochemistry; Structural integrity; Surface engineering; Bioengineering & polymer synthesis; Mining & raw materials. While preserving the freedom of research and initiative of its researchersstrive to meet the standards of proficiency that allows CEMUC to be recognized as a research reference at European level. CEMUC consists of 89 integrated PhD researchers, of whom 48 are university professors from the host institutions, the Universities of: Coimbra (UC ‐ 32 researchers), Porto (UP ‐ 10) and Trás‐os‐Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD ‐ 6). CEMUC also includes integrated PhD members from the Polytechnic Institutes of: Coimbra (IPC ‐ 4), Leiria (IPL ‐ 4) and Tomar (IPT ‐ 1). The remaining integrated PhD researchers are hired on fixed‐term (7) and post‐doctoral fellows (25). CEMUC also includes about ninety researchers with master's degree, of whom 67 are PhD students. CEMUC® was graded as "Excellent" in the last three international assessments (1999, 2003, 2007), promoted by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and its Chairman is PhD José Valdemar Fernandes.
