About a thousand cities, from different nations and continents, were represented. Description: The main purpose of this event was to introduce, discuss and map different innovative enterprises concerning administration and democratic participation, as well as the social changes happening over the last years. A number of national and international institutions took part in this event. Place: Events Center of the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul (CEPUC) Conference on the Development of Cities in the news Conference on the Development of Cities in the news International Free Software Forum (fisll) Period: April 17 -19, 2008 (9th edition) Numbers: In 2007, this event had representatives from 19 countries and from almost all brazilian states. 5.369 took part in the event. Description: The Forum is one of the main spots for technical, political and social discussion about free software in Brazil and in the world. Its use is discussed in many different areas, such as security, education, politics, culture, technology, among others. Place: FIERGS Expo Center Destinations 2006, Third Annual Summit of the World Tourism Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development Period: November 29th – December 2nd, 2006. Numbers: This event had 5.000 congressists - business leaders, government authorities, academics, researchers and NGO members - from 77 countries and had 60 simultaneous actives going on. Description: The main purpose of this event was to discuss and disseminate case studies that give concrete examples of how tourism can promote peace and sustainable development through a global exchange of experiences, strategies and innovative solutions. Place: Events Center of the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul (CEPUC) The 9th Assembly of the World Council of Churches Period: 14 - 23 February 2006 Numbers: Around 5.000 participants from 110 countries debated the performance of 348 churches that represented more than 550 millions Christians. Description: The Assembly, addressing the theme "God, in your grace, transform the world”, was a time of encounter, prayer, celebration and deliberation for thousands of Christian women and men from around the world. Place: Events Center of the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul (CEPUC) World Social Forum Five editions (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005) Period: January 26th-31st, 2005 (last edition) Numbers: In the march highlighting the beginning of the 5th edition, over 200 thousand people were present. There were over 155 thousand participants, from which 35 thousand were part of the Acampamento da Juventude (Youth Camping) and 6,823 communicators. Around 6,872 organizations from 151 countries were involved in 2,500 activities distributed in eleven themed spaces. The days of lowest peak were January 26th and 30th: 500 thousand people came to the World Social Territory. 533 interpreters from 30 countries were involved. 16 Languages were translated. Description: This event offers a space for debating ideas, thoughts, proposals, exchange of experiences and the articulation of social movements, networks, NGOs and others organizations. Education International's 4th World Congress Period: 22-26 July 2004 Description and numbers: The event was organized by the Education International, the world's largest educators' federation representing over 29 million members. Over 1.500 delegates, observers and guests from more than 150 countries and territories took part. Place: Events Center of the Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul (CEPUC) World Education Forum Three editions (2001, 2003, 2004) Period and numbers: The first edition, in 2001, had 15000 educators from 60 countries, 1000 entities represented by 1200 officials and 82 guests. The last, which occurred from July 28th – 31st, 2004, had over more than 22 thousand people from 47 countries. Description: The event was created to bring educators together from all over the world to stand for public education. Place: CEPUC, Gigantinho, Araujo Vianna Auditorium 5th Worldwide Forum of Social Communication It’s the largest event on communication turned for a great civil, social and humanitarian cause. The event, addressing the theme “Actions of Environmental Sustainability”, occurred on March 25th, 2008. The others editions also happened in Porto Alegre. Big fairs hosted in Porto Alegre Big fairs hosted in Porto Alegre Campus Party Brasil It’s the biggest network electronic entertainment event in the world. Since 1997, it takes place in Spain. In Brazil, the event happened in São Paulo on the week of February 11th and will come back in 2009. There were 5.500 attendances, 2.800 computers, 1.800 barracks and 360 talks. Mercopar The Subcontracting and Industrial Innovation Fair Since 1992 the event is promoting trade and partnerships between domestic and foreign companies with the aim of fostering international competition and integration. The fair takes place in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2007 there were 443 exhibitors, 24.700 professional visitors and US$ 40 millions of business transactions. ISA Show South America It’s the biggest and the most important event for instrumentation, systems and automation in South America. The next edition will take place on 1719 November 2008 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Expodireto This agribusiness event occurs since 2000 in Não-Me-Toque, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The last edition that took place on 10-14 March 2008. The volume of trade was US$ 175 million. The total of visitors in five days was 153.560. Febramec The Brazilian Mechanics Trade Fair The event has been held since 1987. In 2007 it received a public of more than 20.000 and brought together 250 companies from the whole metalmechanical chain, with an estimated business volume of US$ 45 million, up to 20% more than the previous edition. The event takes place in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. The next edition will take place August 12-16, 2008. FIMEC - 32nd International Fair of Leather, Chemicals, Components and Equipments for Footwear and Tanneries The event is one of the most important world events of the leatherfootwear sector. It takes place in Novo Hamburgo, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil. On the previous edition in 2007, there were 56.011 visitors for 42 countries. The next edition will take place from 08th to 11th April 2008. Comdex Brazil The Comdex Brazil is the biggest and most important IT event in Latin America. It took place from 1992 to 2004 at the Anhembi Exibition Pavillion in São Paulo, Brazil. Vistors – 110.000 Fenasoft It’s considered the biggest technology fair in Brazil. Occurs since 1986. More than 460 exhibitors selling and showing products of 2 thousand companies and more than 1 million visitors. Courovisão - International Fair of Components, Leather, Chemicals and Accessories for Footwear and Manufactured Goods Since 2000 it takes place in the city of Novo Hamburgo, state of Rio Grande do Sul, home to the world’s biggest leather-footwear complex. About 70% of the volume of exported Brazilian footwear is manufactured in this region and sold worldwide. Period: September 30th to October 02nd, 2008. Interop São Paulo Interop is the leading global business technology brand with events in Las Vegas, New York, Tokyo, Berlin and Moscow. Interop São Paulo will be held in conjunction with Security Week Brazil 2008, the most important Latin American risk management and information security event. The event have been project 5.000 participants and 125 exhibitors. Period: August 12 - 14, 2008. Place: Transamerica Expo Center, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Brazil: Important Economic Dates Brazil’s Economy The 8th world economy Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars in 2007, up 5,4% from 2006. Brazil’s Economy • In 2007, Brazil exports reached US$ 160.6 billion, and imports were US$ 120.6 billion, resulting in a trade flow of US$ 281.2 billion all records values for the period – and surplus of US$ 40.0 billion. Considering 2006, exports grew by 16.6% and imports grew by 32.0%. Brazil’s Economy Brazil’s industrial sector grew 4.9% in 2007 compared to 2006. Meanwhile, the agricultural and livestock sector presented a expansion of 5.3% and the services sector grew 4.7% in the same period. Brazil’s ITC Market • Brazil is the seventh largest software market in the world (grows at 11% per year, since 1995). • The number of web users in Brazil reach 22 millions in February of 2008, growth of 56,7% in the comparison between February of 2007. Brazil was the country with bigger middle time of residential navigation - 22 hours and 59 minutes for user. • Brazil is the fourth largest computer market in the world reaching 10 million units in 2007, up 28% from 2006.
