O
embaixador Kayode Garrick, que esteve em Salvador, Estado
da Bahia, para participar da assinatura do Contrato de Locação
da Casa Cultural da Nigéria, também aproveitou
a oportunidade para se reunir com a diretoria da
PROMO, o Centro Internacional de Negócios da
Bahia na terça-feira,7 de abril de 2009. O embaixador
foi acompanhado na reunião por Sr. O. I. Iginla,
Ministro (Informação e Cultura) desta embaixada.
A reunião contou com a presença do Sr. Ricardo
Saback, Presidente da PROMO, Sr. Jacques Santiago,
Diretor de Investimentos da PROMO e Sr. Bruno Aloi,
Diretor de Negócios e Cooperação Empresarial da
PROMO. Houve muitas discussões frutíferas durante
a reunião, versando sobre diversos assuntos que
ajudariam aumentar os intercâmbios econômicos
e de cooperação entre o Estado da Bahia, Brasil
e o Estado de Lagos, Nigéria.

officials of PROMO, the International Business
Centre of Bahia on Tuesday, 7th April, 2009. The
Ambassador was accompanied to the meeting
by Mr. O.I. Iginla, Minister (Information and
Culture) at the Embassy. Present at the meeting
were Mr. Ricardo Saback, President of PROMO,
Mr. Jaques Santiago, Investment Director
of PROMO and Mr. Bruno Aloi, Director of
Corporate Cooperation and Business of PROMO.
A lot of fruitful discussions were held during
the meeting on various issues which would
help to develop economic links and cooperation
between Bahia State, Brazil and Lagos State,

A
Nigéria foi convidada a integrar a prestigiosa Cúpula do G-8 a
se realizar em julho de 2009 na cidade italiana de L’Aquila que
foi atingida recentemente por um terremorto. O convite estendido à
Nigéria para participar da Cúpula do G-8 foi de propósito e foi aprovado
pelo governo italiano, de acordo com o Sr. Massimo Baisistwech, o
embaixador italiano na Nigéria. O Sr. Baisistwech deu a entender que
embora a Nigéria não seja um membro do Grupo do G-20 cujos membros
incluem a Ìndia e a Indonésia, a sua posição na Àfrica e o consequente
potencial de crescimento que ela possui têm sido responsáveis pelo
convite à Cúpula do G-8 a se realizar em julho do corrente ano.
O Embaixador italiano relevou as colaborações da Nigéria na manutenção
da paz na sub-região oeste africana e enfatizou que nesta era da
globalização, a importância da Nigéria no continente africano não deve
passar despercebível, acrescentando que a Nigéria deveria integrar a
mesma liga em que se encontram os países como a Ìndia, a Indonésia, a
China e a África do Sul. Segundo o Sr. Baisistwech, a Nigéria precisa ser
reconhecida pelos seus imensos potenciais que culminaram no motivo
pelo qual foi convidada a integrar a Cúpula.

igeria has been invited to the prestigious G-8 Summit
scheduled to hold in July, 2009, at the Italian cit y of L’Aquila
which was recently hit by an ear thquake. The invitation of Nigeria
to the G-8 Summit was deliberate and has been approved by the
Italian government, according to Mr. Massimo Baisist wech, the
Italian Ambassador to Nigeria. Mr. Baisist wech explained that
although Nigeria is not a member of the G-20 with other countries
like India and Indonesia, her position in Africa and the at tendant
potential grow th she possesses has inf luenced her invitation to
the G-8 Summit in July, 2009.
The Italian Ambassador noted Nigeria’s contributions to
peacekeeping in the West African sub-region and stressed that
in this era of globalization, Nigeria’s impor tance in the African
continent cannot be over-emphasized, adding that Nigeria should
be in the same league with countries like India, Indonesia, China
and South Africa. According to Mr. Baisist wech, Nigeria needs
recognition because of its huge potentials which was why it has
been invited to the G-8 Summit.

Três Bancos Nigerianos entre os Maiores Bancos do Mundo

rês bancos nigerianos, a saber, o First Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, e
International Bank Plc, conseguiram integrar as 2000 maiores empresas mundiais da Classificação
Forbes. O trio, de acordo com a Revista Forbes, está se juntando às demais 248 empresas em toda
parte do mundo para superar o mesmo número de empresas que apereceram no
ranking em 2008. Para a Nigéria, a relação desses bancos na atual Global 2000
é motivo de alegria. O First Bank Plc obteve 1,375, enquanto o UBA ficou com
1,560. O Intercontinental Bank Plc completou o ranking Nigéria com 1,798.
Essa notícia parece mostrar a confirmação da indústria financeira global de
2009, que relacionou os três bancos entre os 500 maiores bancos do mundo.
A pesquisa e a classificação globais da indústria bancária para 2009 haviam
relacionado o First Bank of Nigeria Plc, o Intercontinental Bank Plc, o Union Bank

Three Nigerian Banks Among World’s Biggest
T
hree Nigerian Banks, namely First Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, and
Intercontinental Bank Plc, have made the Forbes list of top 2000 world biggest Companies. The
trio, according to Forbes Magazine, is joining 248 other Companies around the world to displace the
same number of Companies that featured on the list in the 2008 ranking.
For Nigeria, the listing of these Banks on the current Global 2000 is a cause
for cheers. First Bank Plc is ranked at 1,375, while the UBA comes on
the list at number 1,560. Intercontinental Bank Plc completes Nigeria’s
showing at number 1,798.
This news appears to be a confirmation of the 2009 global banking
industry, which listed the three Banks among the top 500 Banks in the
world. The global banking industry research and ratings for 2009 had listed
First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Intercontinental Bank Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria
Plc, Zenith Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc on the world’s top 500
banking brands by the Banker Magazine, a publication of the Financial
Times of London. Nigerian Banks made their first showing on the world’s top 500 Banks in 2007 when
Intercontinental Bank Plc came number 355 on the list while also emerging the fastest growing Bank
in the world. The Bank has since then made the list moving up in 2008 to number 334.
The three Banks in Nigeria that made the 2009 list had emerged as industry leaders consistently since
after the banking industry reforms introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2004.

2009. The golden
event took place
at the premises
of the Primeira
Igreja Evangelica
Congregacional de
Brasilia in Asa Sul,
Brasilia. The occasion was well attended by
members of the Redeemed Christian Church
of God and their families in Brasilia and also
from Sao Paulo where there
is a branch of the Church.
Also gracing the occasion
with their presence were
the Ambassadors of
the Republics of Ghana
and Cameroun. The
Ambassador of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria to the
Federative Republic of
Brazil, H.E. Mr. Kayode
Garrick and his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Garrick,

Brasil é conhecido pelos seus

podemos
acrescentar, titilantes e este ano (2009)
não foi nenhuma exceção. Durante
cerca de uma semana, o Brasil inteiro
fecha as suas portas e se agita ao ritmo,
ao som e à dança do samba- a música
e a dança que são exclusivas do Brasil.
Com certeza, os funcionários desta
embaixada e suas famílias não são
imunes à febre do samba que contagiava
os brasileiros por uma semana. Sendo
assim, partimos rumo ao Ceilanbôdromoa arena do carnaval de Brasília, para
marcar a presença na caprichosa folia.

razil is renowned for its colourful,
captivating, scintillating and, we
might add, titillating Carnivals (or
Carnavais, whichever you prefer) and
this year’s (2009) was no exception. For
about one week, the whole of Brazil shut
down and pulsated to the rhythm, sound
and dance of Samba, the music and dance
form which is unique to Brazil.
Of course, the Embassy staff and their
families were not immune to the Samba
fever which gripped Brasileiros for the
week. So, off we went to Ceilanbôdromo,
the venue of the Carnival in Brasilia, to
participate in the fun and frolicking.

no sábado 17 de janeiro
de 2009 o Blumenau de
Jandira,
vencendo
pelo
elástico placar de 11 a 0.
No domingo, 18 de janeiro
de 2009, as nigerianas
voltaram a enfrentar o time
feminino sub-18 de Itapevi,
vencendo desta vez por 4 a 1
e conquistando o troféu. As
par tidas foram realizadas
no Estádio Municipal André
Nunes Junior. De acordo com
os representantes da equipe
feminina sub-18 de Itapevi,
o torneio e os amistosos
contra a a equipe nigeriana
ser viram de estímulo às
atletas de Itapevi para
intensificar
treinamentos,
com vistas à evolução
técnica da equipe. O time
disputará os Jogos Regionais
em julho deste ano em Santo
André,
enfrentando
as
melhores equipes da região.
Nigerian Female Team Wins Itapevi Tournament
The Ikot Abasi Queens of Nigeria
won a mini-football tournament
organized by the Office of
the Secretar y for Spor ts and
Recreation of Itapevi. The team
defeated the Blumenau of Jandira,
by a wide margin of 11 goals on
Saturday, 17th Januar y 2009.
On Sunday, 18th Januar y, 2009,
the Nigerian team returned to
face the Under-18 Female Team
of Itapevi. This time the girls
won by 4 goals to 1 to clinch
the trophy. The matches were
played at the André Nunes Junior
Municipal Stadium. According
to representatives of Itapevi
Under-18 Female Team, the
tournament
and
friendly
matches against the Nigerian
team ser ved as a stimulus
to enable the female team
of
Itapevi
intensify
its
training effor ts, with a view
to improving the technical
evolution of the Brazilian
team. The Brazilian team will
par ticipate in the Regional
Games coming up in July
this year at Santo Andre,
where it will be playing with
the best teams in the region.
