Brazil is an emerging world power, both politically and economically, and of growing importance to the Netherlands. In its turn, the Netherlands are an important entry for Brazilian exports to Europe, and the Netherlands is one of the biggest investors in Brazil. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will give an extra stimulus to the development of Brazil. Strong growth is being measured in Brazil, specifically in sectors in which the Netherlands excel, such as logistics, transport, fuels, chemicals, agriculture, science and technology and design. Both countries share special cultural ties since the times of Maurice of Nassau in the 17th century. The city of Carambeí, one of the Dutch agricultural settlements in Brazil, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011. We thought these were all good reasons to celebrate with some special events and to use our slogan for the year ‘Experimente!’ or Experience it! On March 4th, 2011, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed a law into effect which officially declared 2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil. Later on the Government of the State of Pernambuco held a special session and declared the Ano da Holanda no Brasil in the State of Pernambuco. Events took place all over Brazil but mostly in the 3 bigger cities: Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and in the Dutch agricultural settlements. Some events were organized by either the Embassy or the Consulates General, other events were organized by third parties. Sometimes these third parties were given some of our funds, sometimes they included the Ano da Holanda logo and a letter of support of the Ambassador or Consul General sufficed. This booklet will give an overview of the events that took place during this special year. The project ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ was realized with funds allocated by the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sponsoring. Due to the international financial crises and ongoing budget cuts in the Netherlands, it was not possible to get substantial funding from the Dutch government. We are pleased that it did prove possible to find additional support from Dutch companies based in Brazil like KLM, ING, Heineken, Hyva, Shell, RHI (Randstad) and Golden Tulip Hotels. Damen Shipyards sponsored two specific events, the Rio International Cello Encounter and the Cebri-Clingendael seminar which, due to the agenda of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, will only be realized in 2012. Other sponsors joined for single events like for instance the Queen’s Day celebration and the orange bike tour. We hope you enjoyed our ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ just as much as we did. We also hope we were able to show the Brazilians what the Netherlands has to offer nowadays. Through this booklet you can relive the events you attended and get a good impression of the ones you, unfortunately, had to miss out on. To use our slogan one last time: ‘Experimente’! Kees Rade Ambassador 3 4 Credit http://www.omniauto.it Events The following events took place during the Year of Holland in Brazil. Only some of the events that took place in the Dutch agricultural settlements are mentioned. For a more extensive list of their events, please visit the respective cities’ websites. Credit flyingartwork.nl From March 18th through March 20th two aerial dancers of the Dutch acrobatic group Flying Artwork performed two shows a night called ‘Flying Jellyfish‘ at the Pontão do Lago Sul in Brasília. There was supposed to be a show on the opening night at the residence with these same aerial dancers doing acrobatics while hanging from a crane, from company Hyva, with a jellyfish hovering over them but, unfortunately, it got cancelled because of heavy rain. Although it was the rainy season, they got to do their six shows at the Pontão, sometimes with a short weather delay. The Pontão is an area where people go to take a stroll or dine out at fine restaurants and especially at night it attracts a lot of people. Each show had a lot of spectators and the artists got an immense applause. Little children were mesmerized by the artists and asked them for signatures and wanted to be photographed with them. Despite the fact that it missed the expected attention from the press, it turned out to be an unforgettable event for the young pianists. The 22nd Michiel arrived in Brasília and gave a concert for the public free of charge. He played his own works on the Steinway of the Teatro Nacional and chatted a little with the public during the concert. During the break of the concert for about 350 people, small bottles of water were served, offered by the Dutch Embassy, in honor of World Water Day. Each bottle had a little tag with the World Water Day logo and a small explanation, to make people aware of this fact. Michiel Borstlap enjoyed Brasília so much that he wanted to stay an extra day. He was scheduled to leave for São Paulo the morning of the 23rd of March but everything got rescheduled for the 24th. Michiel got to take an improvised tour of Brasília with some people from the Embassy. He was crazy about the architecture of the city. At night some colleagues took Michiel to Clube do Choro which is a famous music club for traditional “choro” in Brasília. The famous Brazilian pianist Mr. João Nonato played with friends. In the interval 6 a meeting was arranged between the two pianists and the owner of the club and at the end of the night Michiel jammed a little with the drummer and got a standing ovation. Following his successful concert in Brasília, it was time for Michiel Borstlap to show some of the Netherlands’ best jazz music in São Paulo. They wrote press releases with our input, set up interviews with journalists and made sure we got the press clippings of everything related to Ano da Holanda no Brasil that appeared in the papers, both hard copy and online. SA dealt with the questions we got from the press at certain events. During the year 124 articles in newspapers, 125 articles on websites and 8 articles in magazines were published. Also the Ano dan Holanda got coverage in 15 television pieces and 5 radio broadcasts. SA also helped design banners that we took everywhere to get immediate Ano da Holanda exposure, as well as various flyers, invitations and posters that we needed. SA Comunicação was chosen because they have representations in 2 of the 3 bigger cities in Brazil. The company Active4 in São Paulo was hired to manage the content on the Ano da Holanda website www.anodaholandanobrasil.com.br. The calendar with events for 2011 was easily accessible through the website and much more facts about the year could be found on this website. Between March and December the website attracted more than 14.000 visitors, which is around 1.500 visitors per month or 34 unique visitors a day. Active4 also helped us with some graphic designs, for instance some invitations and this booklet have been designed by Active 4. The website: Social media like a friends’ page on Facebook and a group on LinkedIn were also used. Whenever an event came up we tried to have it included in local free ‘what-to-do’ papers. A good example of this is ‘The Papagaio’ in Brasília. This is a weekly electronic newsletter from the American Embassy spread within the diplomatic community. It is one of the best read weekly’s in Brasília amongst diplomats. We also used the monthly Brasília Agenda with things to do in the capital. In Rio de Janeiro the newsletter of the Dutch Club was used to communicate events and messages. The articles in the press also lead to requests for television and radio interviews with the ambassador, which were afterwards put on the website and the social media. This lead to a ‘snowball-effect’ that the Ano da Holanda was known to a larger crowd. The Ano da Holanda was also adopted by other initiatives, like the friendly match between Brazil and Holland on 4 June, 2011. ArenA do Brasil, a sister company of ArenA Amsterdam, organized a VIP event for the occasion and used the logo on the shirts. Consequently, the whole stadium knew it was the Year of Holland in Brazil. In May a selected group of journalists travelled to the Netherlands to participate in the Influentials Program of the Agentschap NL. This resulted in a better understanding by some Brazilian media of the Netherlands and in a few in depth articles on Ano da Holanda no Brasil. 42 43 Website 44 Conclusion/evaluation ‘2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ has come to an end. Our aim was to further strengthen the already strong ties between our two nations and looking back we can say that it was a very successful year. The relatively small amount of money realized so much more than we ever could have anticipated when we started making plans for this special year. The concept ‘Year of Holland in Brazil’ really works. It gave some of our national artists that extra little push to travel to a faraway destination and helped with getting their funding together. In Brazil it opened more doors for Holland to expose our culture in various ways. Business partners got linked at various seminars that got organized especially for the occasion, expertise got shared and already new partnerships are taking shape. Because resources were limited we every now and then had to make difficult choices not to participate in certain wonderful events and in one case even had to cancel at a very late notice. On top of the events that carried the Ano da Holanda sticker, so much more Dutch events took place in Brazil. There are for instance the performances by world renowned DJs Armin van Buuren and Tiësto and the ever charming saxophonist Candy Dulfer. Although we did not always get press attention specifically for Ano da Holanda, we generated a lot of press attention for the Netherlands in general and some specific topics. With all the big events coming up in Brazil we are already teaming up to contribute to making all events into a great success. A big thank you goes out to everyone who took part, however big or small, in Ano da Holanda no Brasil. 45 46 Staff ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ Brasília Kees Rade, ambassador Miranda van Iersel, consultant Corien te Brummelstroete, intern, succeeded by Fanny van Rijn Mariëlle van Miltenburg, political and cultural affairs, succeeded by Sara Cohen Bastiaan Engelhard, economic affairs and overall coordination of Holland Year São Paulo Wieke Piët, consul-general, succeeded by Jan-Gijs Schouten Gonneke de Ridder, deputy consul-general Micha Schijlen, cultural affairs, succeeded by John van de Velde Rio de Janeiro Paul Comenencia, consul-general Patricia Broers, cultural affairs Contact Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands SES Quadra 801, lote 05 70405-900 Brasília – DF Brazil T: +55 61 3961 3200 E: [email protected] W: http://brazilie.nlambassade.org/ 47 Thanks We are very thankful for our Ano da Holanda no Brasil corporate sponsors as well as the sponsors who got on board for a specific events.
