The contrasts between black and
white cultural ingredients of the
pastime of the archipelago are clearly evident in the island of Santiago.
Ribeira Grande, the very first capital
of Cape Verde, located in the South coast of the island, 10 km away
from the city of Praia, continues to
reveal, until today, its European influence, while the people that leave
in the mountains, whose ancestors
were slaves, have cultural behaviors
typically African. The navigators António Noli and Diogo Gomes arrived in Santiago in 1460 and established the first Portuguese colony in
Ribeira Grande (Cidade Velha). The
town evolved as a commercial trade
post, by supplying the ships and participating in the slaves’ trade.
The vulnerability of its seafront exposed to the frequent attacks of the
pirates and corsairs, resulted in its

The Municipality, which is located in
the north of Santiago Island, is also
home to the former concentration
camp of Tarrafal, now a museum.
Built by the Portuguese government in 1936, the Penal Colony of
Tarrafal also known as “Campo do
Tarrafal” was for many years a site
of atrocities and attacks to human
rights, until its closure in 1954.

The museum was inaugurated in
1997 to house a collection of objects that represent the traditional
practices and customs of the people
of Cape Verde. The Ethnographic
Museum of Praia, through collections related to activities such as
farming, fishing, weaving (baskets,
PANARIA), tin can craft, pottery,
grinding tools and accessories, seeks to publicize and perpetuate the
collective memory of the Capeverdean people.

The Museum was re-opened on
October 24, 2008, after completion
of redevelopment works in the building. The Museum consists of collections resulting from underwater
archaeological excavations carried
out in the seas of the Archipelago
of Cape Verde, by the South African
and Portuguese companies, Afrimar
and Arqueonautas S.A. (mostly)
respectively, and also found during
the land excavations carried out in
Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande de
Santiago).

KRIOL JAZZ FESTIVAL
The Kriol Jazz Festival - Praia aims
to promote Creole inspired music
originating from all the islands. The
Festival is an annual event and takes
place on the island of Santiago, with
a schedule spread over three days.
The target audience is the same
time national and foreign. The period April was chosen to be a month
of great tourist inflow, so as to attract the largest possible number of
viewers. Tickets range 1000 Cape
Verdean escudos (standing) and
1500 $ 00 (seated) per night, with
the first free day.
