Welcome to the Emergency Abdominal Surgery Course!
Previously organised under the designation of Emergency Surgery Course by Donegal Clinical Research
Academy (www.dcra.ie), Letterkenny, Ireland, the first was held in Donegal in May 2012. Meanwhile, six
more courses took place in Dublin (2013, 2014, 2015), Coimbra, Portugal (2013, 2014), and Torrevieja, Spain,
(2015), and a EASC-like authorized meeting took place in Campinas, Brasil, during the 2 nd Ibero-AfroAmerican Meeting of Trauma and Emergency Surgery.
World leading courses in Emergency Surgery are well established with European Society for Trauma and
Emergency Surgery (ESTES), in Europe, and Management of Surgical Emergencies (MOSES), in Australia and
New Zealand. The format of this course has been presented at World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) in
Bergamo. The Lusitanian Association for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (http://altec-lates.pt), represented
in the National Committee for Emergency Surgery Education of the Portuguese Medical Association (Ordem
dos Médicos, OM), is keen to embrace greater international collaboration in the teaching of emergency
surgery.
Course Goals
Understanding the natural history of key abdominal emergency surgery presentations with emphasis on
decision making and operative tips and traps to optimise outcome. This, coupled with a manual containing

Coimbra is one of the most important urban centers of Portugal and plays a role as the chief city of the
central part of the country. Over 430.000 inhabitants live in the Metropolitan Area of Coimbra, made of 16
municipalities, comprising a 3372 km² territory. It is the district seat of Coimbra district, which belongs to the
larger Centro region – the heart of ancient Lusitania – from whom it is the capital. The city, which has been
the capital of Portugal during the 12 th and 13th centuries, has the archeological remains from the Roman
cities of Conimbriga and Aeminium. Coimbra developed into an important cultural centre, mainly because of
the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290, and has notable monuments from that era and beyond. The
university is one of the oldest in Europe. Due to its monumental buildings and history has been granted
UNESCO World Heritage status and attracts tourists from around the world.
