The Fifth Latin American Advanced Programme on Rethinking Macro and Development Economics Hosted by São Paulo School of Economics EESP-‐FGV/SP with support from FAPESP Fundação Getúlio Vargas, São Paulo, Brazil January 6th – January 10th, 2014 The São Paulo School of Economics from Fundação Getulio Vargas -‐ EESP intends, for the fifth time, to offer an advanced program for rethinking macroeconomics and economic development theory, modeled on the successful experience held in Cambridge University, UK, for eight years. The program is intended mainly for young graduate students from Brazil and abroad. There is a growing demand for an alternative to orthodox economic theory, due to the failure of several recent reforms and macroeconomic policies in many developing economies. This course aims to fill this gap by including lectures in which participants will discuss macroeconomic theories and national development strategies that enable middle-‐income countries carry out the process of catching up without causing macroeconomic imbalances and income concentration as observed over the last few years. It is an opportunity for students to be exposed to the edge of critical research on these issues. The list of confirmed lecturers includes Gabriel Palma (Cambridge University), Ha-‐Joon Chang (Cambridge University), Jose Antonio Ocampo (Columbia University), Thomas Palley (AFL-‐CIO, Washington DC), Luiz Carlos Bresser-‐Pereira (Sao Paulo School of Economics from Fundação Getulio Vargas) and Nelson Barbosa (Sao Paulo School of Economics from Fundação Getulio Vargas). There will be no tuition fees, but unfortunately we will not fund travel and accommodation expenses. Applications, including a CV, transcripts, and a letter of recommendation, should be sent, with a covering letter, to [email protected] by December 3rd, 2013. Candidates will be notified of the results by December 7th. We are also encouraging participants in previous programmes (Laporde, Caporde or Aporde) to submit papers to be selected and presented in extra sessions during this Programme. We will cover air tickets for participants coming from South America and accommodation (regardless of the origin of the applicant).
