São José dos Campos is located 80 km (50 miles) from São Paulo and 320 km (200 miles) from
Rio de Janeiro. The city population is 700,000 people. There are several major corporations
surrounding the Johnson & Johnson facility, e.g., General Motors, Monsanto, Embraer, Nestlé
and Panasonic. There are also several universities.
The São José dos Campos facility houses Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical and Medical
facilities. The total area is approximately 1,260,000 square feet, and the industrial area is 868,000
square feet.
The site manufactures sanitary products, toothbrushes, dental floss, toiletries, cotton swabs,
bandages, tapes, diapers, condoms, and nursing pads. The site also houses administration
offices.
Operations run 24 hours per day, 5 days per week, the location employs approximately 2,300 J&J
employees.
Community and Social Engagement
Civic Activities:
• Tobacco Free initiative at the community.
• International Coastal Cleanup participation – around 220 Johnson & Johnson volunteers
participated on the activity.
• Sponsoring health care for children with cancer - GACC (402 children in 2008)
• Donate plastic waste (cotton swabs, toothbrushes) from injection molding machines to “Fazenda
Esperança” (Farm Hope), which uses it for their own production of plastic goods. In 2007, the
“Fazenda Esperança” hosted the Pope during his visit to Brazil due to the amazing value that this
Institution brings to the community.
• Sponsoring Junior Achievement Program - 190 new potential entrepreneurs in 2008
• Paraiba River Revitalization – 10.000 seedlings sets donated
• Firefighters Day, municipal school spent the day with the J&J firefighters creating the accident
prevention awareness at home and school.
• RINEM member (Emergency Integrated Network) providing emergency support to the
community.
• Sponsoring SAFE Kids program - 350.000 children in 227 public institutions since 2001
• Boost environmental awareness by inviting students, Public authorities, etc to visit the site Waste
Recycling Area
• Environmental Education – Rã Bugio Project – More than 4000 students participated in the
environment education project (Ecological trails in the Atlantic Forest). Since 2010, J&J
employees and family are participating in this project.
Environmental, Health and Safety Performance
Environmental Highlights:
• The site has been registered by ERM-CVS to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
standard since 2000.
• 70% of the campus is green, including a native Atlantic Forest. There are several species of
animals, such as capuchin monkey, armadillo, fox, hummingbirds, Brazilian mocking bird, etc,
ensuring much biodiversity inside the industrial site.
• The facility’s treated wastewater returns to the river with more than 98% purity. The effluent
treatment plant on the campus was designed to treat a volume of water that is equivalent to a city
of 22,000 inhabitants.
• 81% of waste generated within the site is recycled. The Waste Recycling Area is considered state
of the art, and is used as a model for other industries and the city township.

• The São Paulo Industries Confederation (CIESP) has recognized Johnson & Johnson to the 55
anniversary in São José dos Campos, 2009.
• Health Municipal Office recognized Johnson & Johnson for significant involvement at the World
Health Day, 2009.Municipal Authority has recognized Johnson & Johnson for the extention of the
Safe Kids program to the community, 2009.
• The site was recognized with the Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Sustainability Award for the
Forest Restoration Project . Taking the project a bit further, the facility started a tree nursery,
specializing in native species, which produces 7,000 trees per year. These trees are donated to
community and governmental groups for habitat rehabilitation, 2008
• Sao Paulo State “Tobacco Free Environment” Certification. It is the first Brazilian company to
receive this award. The Sao Paulo State Governor granted the award, 2007
• 2007 Brazilian Environmental Benchmarking contest Award with the case: “Waste, Raw-Material
to Social Transformation”, a partnership with “Fazenda Esperança”.
