The New Face of Student Government
Learning, Responsibility, Communication, Solutions
Over the past year and a half the role of the Upper School Student Government Organization (STUCO) has
changed dramatically. Principal Pete Kennedy and STUCO faculty advisor Joe Santos have worked with student
representatives to develop the leadership skills they need to become active participants in the decision-making
process of the Upper School. As a result, students now have more of a voice and work with the faculty and
administration to seek solutions to issues that affect the Upper School community.
Early on in their tenure, STUCO Executives Joy Garrido, Carolina Cooper, Fernando Scodro and Wallace Torres
decided that their organization could, and needed to, go beyond its traditional role of organizing parties and events,
and within the school’s administration they found receptive ears. STUCO members are working hard to help realize
their potential as an important link between students, parents, faculty and administrators. STUCO projects have
made positive contributions to student learning and have improved the overall quality of life on campus.
With added responsibility comes hard work, and STUCO members have risen to the occasion. Before making any
presentations STUCO members often spend hours researching and developing creative solutions to concerns, or
providing thoughtful advice for the faculty and administrators. STUCO members develop studies and surveys so
that they can present information and opinions during faculty meetings, host school wide assemblies, (including
graduation), interview headmaster candidates, and meet regularly with the Upper School Principal.
Throughout this transformation STUCO members have learned that the faculty wants to work with them as long as
they take their responsibilities seriously. Student leaders have now become active participants in many of the Upper
School’s improvement initiatives. As STUCO and faculty develop a more mature relationship everyone wins and
EARJ is sure to maintain its place as one of the premier international schools in Brazil.

Respect Shirts – Friday, February 16th is RESPECT Shirt Day. Please remind your child to
wear his/her shirt. Extra shirts are available for purchase by students and adults in the
Middle School Office for R$10,00. Should you want one, please contact Ms. Sonja at
[email protected]
Student Behavior – It has come to our attention that some students may be playing a dangerous
game at home where they hyperventilate and then choke each other. Apparently the dizziness
and fainting create a sensation similar to a “high.” We ask parents to speak with their children
about the dangers inherent with this type of activity. Thanks.
Middle School/Upper School Music Recital – We hope to see parents and students at the
recital on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30 PM in the Auditorium. Please note that students will
have an after school rehearsal on Wednesday of this week as well. For more information, please
contact Mr. V at [email protected] or Ms. Barbara at [email protected] We
thank you for your support of our music program!
Email Communication – To better facilitate communication, we are sending most
communication with parents to email addresses. Two emails have been sent to our
parents this semester – the Welcome Back letter and the letter regarding the
upcoming Search Institute survey. If you did not receive either of these, please call
the office so we can get your correct email address. Thanks for your attention to
this!
Search Institute Survey – Students took the survey this week and we have sent the surveys
to the US. As soon as we have results, which is typically 8-12 weeks, we will be sharing them
with the students and the parent community. If you have any questions about the survey, please
contact Ms. Penny in the Office.
Continued Work on Community Service – The eighth graders in the Health Quality of
Life Service Learning Group will be visiting Hemo Rio on Wednesday, February 14 to begin
planning the work they will do with this NGO. Please contact Mr. Wozniak for more information
at [email protected] We thank you for your support of our ongoing efforts to involve
our students in meaningful community service.
Carnival Celebration – We are pleased to involve our Portuguese for Foreigners students
in the annual Carnival celebration. With “serpentine,” samba music, and noise makers,
students will be involved in a mini “banda.” Carnival will be held on Friday, February 16th
from 12:12 – 12:50 in room 523. This year we will be able to have a live performance of
samba by some Upper School band students. Thanks to the Portuguese teachers for their
development of this exciting learning opportunity!
Middle School Sports – During the second semester the following sports are open to all
Middle School students as long as students do not turn 15 before the last day of the
tournament. Practice times are 3:30 – 5:00 PM. If you have any questions, please see our

FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT
The PTA wants to welcome all our community to this second semester, especially all the parents of new students and
new teachers. We wish you a great 2007!
As partners in education, PTA has started the year by investing and working with the school on many projects, such as:
The Alcohol Awareness Program: US and MS students have completed the surveys, and soon the results will be
evaluated and presented to students and parents. Also in March a speaker, Dr. Anthony Wong, is coming from Sao
Paulo and will talk to MS and US students and parents about this important issue.
Another exciting initiative of the PTA is the EA Student Lounge and Art Gallery which will directly benefit MS and
US students. Construction will start soon and be completed midway through this semester.
MuseOn, a state-of-the-art interactive children’s museum at our school, is the PTA’s LS initiative, currently in the
construction phase. We encourage all our community to support this great project. We extend our thanks to Ms. Julie
Hunt, our enthusiastic LS Principal, for her dedication and commitment to this magnificent project.
Thanks to all who are working on our International Family Day. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your culture and
celebrate our school’s 70th Birthday. We are very excited about this fun-filled family day that will include: a Northeast
Brazilian Group “Cia. De Dança Hiran Sereni” with 40 dancers, EA’s Community Band, Arthur Sendas Bossa Nova
Band, performances by students and sports and games for the whole family to enjoy. And you can play with our US
Boys and Girls Softball Teams before the BIG 4 Tournament!
During our last Barra Branch PTA meeting, parents of students decided to join with Gavea students for their first ever
Kindergarten celebration. EA Gávea welcomes EA Barra Branch students for this wonderful celebration!
The PTA wishes to thank all parents, our Headmaster, Principals and Teachers who attend the PTA meetings. It is a
win-win situation when we share ideas and work together. Please come and join us at our upcoming PTA Meetings.
Suggestions are welcome and we can always share a “cafezinho” with you.
In Memory of…
We want to extend our sympathies to the families of Izabella Caruso (who was a fifth grade student) and
Monica Rodriguez (who was a PTA Board Member last year). We will always keep them in our hearts.

DA PRESIDENTA DO PTA
Contacto: Ana Carolina H. Rodríguez
[email protected]
Tel. 3322.5455, 9433.5747
As obras vão começar logo e estarão concluídas no meio do semestre.
celebração do Kindergarten.
