These sessions are intended to give parents an overview of the program, highlights, routines and expectations of the grade level, and to give parents an opportunity to meet teachers and visit the classroom. Please note next sessions below which start at 8:15 a.m. in room 412 and continue in classrooms until 9:15. August August August August August August 20 – Kindergarten 21 – 1st grade 22 – 2nd grade 23 – 3rd grade 28 – Preschool 29 – Barra Our students, faculty and staff had fun during our first Spirit Day dressing up in Hats, Ties and Glasses! We sure do have a creative bunch! Our MuséOn is now open daily before school, from 7:30 – 7:50 a.m., and during brunch and recess. At our Community Meeting on Monday we gathered all students and faculty in the MuséOn where we reviewed rules and ‘ooohed and awed’ at the Tangram wall, Stellarium ceiling projection and Shadow Puppet Theatre as well our new little Buddha Board. We have many cool activities related to our theme ‘The History of Communication’ planned for this semester. Our PTA will be helping organize MuséOn parent volunteers starting in the beginning of September. All LS parents are invited to attend an information session about the recently adopted Everyday Math Program, to be held on Monday, August 27th at 8:15 a.m. in room 412. Our LS MILK CAMPAIGN RESUMES this Wednesday, August 22, and every Wednesday thereafter. Please send a bag or container of powdered milk to school: donations will be collected, counted and delivered directly to creches in our neighbourhood. Last year, we had tremendous support for this campaign, and the seeds of social consciousness and the ethic of giving were fostered amongst our students. During the week of August 27th all students in grades 3-5 will be administered the ERB Writing Assessment Program tests (Wrap). This is a standardized assessment that is given annually; test results provide important data for differentiated instruction and improving student learning. The first LS Principal-Parent Breakfast will be held on September 11th at 8:15 a.m. in the MuséOn. Please mark your agendas and join us for a brief presentation about our educational priorities of the year, an informal educational question and answer session and breakfast. Parents are reminded that school will be closed on Friday, August 24 th for Staff Development Day and on Friday, September 7th in celebration of Brazil’s Independence Day. Say Cheese! Ms. Marília Brandão, professional photographer, will be on campus to take LS student and class pictures in September. Barra pictures will be taken the week of September 3rd and Gávea pictures the week of September 10th. A letter will be sent home next week explaining ordering and purchasing procedures. News from the LS Media Center: We have several volunteer opportunities available according to individual talents and choices! Please call us at 2125-9058 or contact the PTA at [email protected] Where to Take Children on Weekends: We suggest Brazil’s Folklore Week (August 22-29) at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. CCBB is located downtown at Rua Primeiro de Março, 66. For more information, please call 3808-2070 or 38082254. MIDDLE SCHOOL SECTION It was wonderful to see so many parents attending our Open House on Friday. We hope you enjoyed being shown the Middle School by your children, having the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to hear about the Via Sapientia trips that are planned for this year. We thank you for taking time to complete the evaluation form and providing us feedback on how to modify our next Open House. The question isn’t, “Are You Creative?” The question is, “How Are You Creative?” Come TRY OUT Destination ImagiNation! Participate in the Instant Challenge Workshop in the Middle School Attic on Monday, August 20th or Tuesday, August 21st from 3:15 – 4:00. No experience is necessary! If you want more information or want to sign up, please see Ms. Ana Melo in the Art Room (620). Please share your congratulations with the students on the attached list (ninth – seventh graders) who were on the fourth quarter Honor Roll or Headmaster’s List. Honor Roll consists of a student having a quarterly average of 85% or higher, while students on the Headmaster’s List have received a quarterly average of 92% or higher. Students received congratulations from Mr. Werner and me as well as donuts and a certificate. The first payment for Via Sapientia is due Monday, August 27th. If you have any questions about this, please contact Ms. Annette Dam in the Activity Office at 21259024 or via email at [email protected] Thanks. Please note Friday, August 24 is a staff development day and there will not be classes held on this day. Teachers will be engaged in further work on our accreditation process as well as in work on ensuring assessment for learning. Over forty students and parents attended the session which lasted from 2:30pm until close to 5:00pm (quite a marathon). This shows how serious and interested our students are about striving to attend the best colleges worldwide. Furthermore, I was lucky enough to spend some time talking to all three representatives later in the day, and was able to hear first hand, what a favorable impression our students had made on them. Over the coming months there will be many more opportunities for students and parents to meet with college representatives, with the month of September being a very busy one. On the 13th of September, we have one of the largest college fairs, the CIS (Council of International Schools) fair coming to EARJ, with representatives from over 30 different colleges and universities. As you will notice in the calendar dates shown below, on Wednesday 29th August, the Upper School will be dismissed at 2:25pm. This will happen on the last Wednesday of every month in order for teachers to conduct cross divisional meetings that will allow us to better integrate teaching and learning throughout the entire school. Students will not miss any of their lesson time during these early dismissal days, as only a homeroom will be cancelled. Finally, in a move for us to do our part to lower the school’s carbon footprint, we want to make more use of parental e-mail addresses and be less reliant on posting letters. Therefore, over the next couple of weeks, we will be testing our e-mail system, sending you a message which will require a response for validation purposes. We already know that there are some problems with Hotmail and Yahoo, and so I would urge you to check your bulk/junk mail folders for messages we may have recently sent you. If our messages are going directly to these folders instead of your inbox, please place us on your safe senders lists. In the meantime, and until we are sure that all our parents are receiving our communications, we will continue to send important information by post as well.
