The Health Technology Graduate Program
(PPGTS) is an Interdisciplinary program of the
Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná linked to
the institutional proposal through the areas of
Health Sciences, Engineering and Technology. It
started in 2003 and its main purpose is the
training of qualified human resources for higher
education and research in its main fields.
The complexity of the phenomena of health and,
consequently, the technologies involved in the
health-disease process determines the need for
interdisciplinary actions and interventions. Thus,
the structure of the program is in line with a
global trend, which is the integration of
information technology, engineering and health.
In the lastest evaluation (2013) by the Brazilian
Federal Agency CAPES, the program received a
level 4 M.Sc. Program.
In 2015 the program was authorized to offer
doctoral degree.

Bioengineering
 Biomaterials and biocompatible materials: research on materials that may be used to
manufacture implantable prostheses and other devices.
 Rehabilitation engineering and assistive technologies: research, development and
testing of devices and equipment to assist in motor rehabilitation and accessibility for
people with disabilities.
 Biomedical instrumentation with emphasis on applications in Biomechanics: research
and development of tools to collect data relating to human movement such as forces,
velocities, positions and joint range.
 Modelling and biomechanical analysis of human movement: a study of human
movement and its control through the combined application of concepts from anatomy,
physiology, physics, mathematics and statistics.
 Medical imaging: research and development of methods for extracting and visualizing
relevant image information of nuclear magnetic resonance, computed tomography,
radiography and others.

Health Technology Assessment
 Application of qualitative and quantitative methods for the evaluation of approaches,
processes and resources that aim to monitor, maintain and improve health and quality
of life of human beings. Examines the clinical, economic, ethical and legal implications
of technology in healthcare.
Research Field
Health Informatics
 Aims at the development, implementation and improvement of techniques, methods
and computer systems in healthcare. Involves the areas of information systems,
decision support, database, artificial intelligence, systems standardization and
integration, telemedicine, indicators, education, bioinformatics, patient electronic
record and epidemiological analysis.
