Nascimento
Award
The Ana Sofia Nascimento Award was established in
2009 to honour the memory of Ana Sofia, Class of 1997,
Ryerson University School of Social Work. Ana passed away
in May, 2009 at the age of 34.
Ana graduated in 1997 from the Ryerson School of Social Work
and received her Master’s of Social Work from the University
of Toronto in 1998. Ana’s commitment to helping people was
clearly reflected in her chosen profession as a Social Worker.
Ana was an exceptional and brave woman who comforted
and cared for others despite the health problems she endured.
She was proud of her work with Portuguese Women 55 Plus,
Woodgreen Community House and York Community Services,
where she was the Manager of Social Work. Wherever Ana
worked, her positive attitude and professionalism quickly gained
the respect of her peers and clients, particularly as an advocate
for and with seniors.
Ana’s lively and ever present humour was one of her many gifts
to others. She also was very proud of her Portuguese heritage
which she celebrated through her passion for soccer, her work
with the group PW55+ and the time she was able to spend in
Portugal with beloved family and friends.
This award has been established to acknowledge Ana’s work
with newcomers, seniors and women, and dedication to social
justice and community development. It will be granted to
Ryerson students for their studies in Social Work with
preference to Portuguese-speaking individuals.
