BRAZILIAN FOOD AND DRINKS
“Feijoada” is the traditional Brazilian dish. The origin of Feijoada is a combination of cultures (Native
Brazilians, Portuguese and Africans). In fact, it was
the Africans that has the idea of adding the pork not
used by the slave owners to black beans. Today, feijoada is comprised of black beans (main ingredient)
and a lot of different types of meat, all well seasoned
with salt, galic and onion. It is usually accompanied
by white rice and collard greens cut into fine strips,
fried manioc flour and pieces of orange. It might
sound strange, but it is delicious.
All feijoadas must be accompanied by the traditional Brazilian
drink called “caipirinha”. Caipirinhas are very tasty and strong. The
are made out cachaça (sugar-cane alcohol), sugar, lime and ice.
Steak is a national passion. Brazilians like them big and rare,
The best cuts are filet and “churrasco”. Chicken is usually grilled,
sometimes fried. Fish is generally fried. “Churrascarias” and
“rodízios” bring you all the meat you can eat and a variety of
other goodies (includind a well-stocked salad bar) for a fixed
price (Av.erage R$ 40,00 per person).
DRINKS
FUIT JUICE: ”Sucos” (juices in Brazil is divine. Request the “sem açúcar” - if you don´t want sugar”
and/or “natural” if you don´t want ice. Or you can
ask for a “vitamina”, which is fruit juice with milk.
Banana and Avocado are great with milk.
COFFEE: Brazilians take their coffee as strong as the
devil, as hot as hell, and as sweet as love - it´s called
“cafézinho”. Drink it as an espresso-sized coffee without milk and cut with plenty of sugar. “Café com leite”
is coffee with hot milk, usually drunk for breakfast.
