SAVE THE DATE 2nd Annual Middle Class Phenomenon in Emerging Markets: Multi-disciplinary and Multi-country Perspectives – An International Conference 11-13 September 2014 Hosted by: Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, RJ-Brazil Conference Organizers: Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro NUPIN: Núcleo de Pesquisas em Negócios Internacionais Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), Georgia State University Conference Chairs: Angela da Rocha and S. Tamer Cavusgil The middle class in rapidly transforming economies has now become one of the most remarkable phenomena of recent decades. Scholars from multiple disciplines and countries have now begun to examine the middle class -- growing number of households who have access to a substantial disposable income that they can direct towards discretionary purchases – e.g. cars, home appliance, better housing, private education for children, and leisure. Following the successful inaugural conference held in Atlanta, U.S.A., in September 2013, (http://middleclassconference.robinson.gsu.edu), this meeting will again bring together researchers from such disciplines as business, culture, economics, political science, communication, sociology, history, and public policy. Our specific objectives include: (i) Capture what we already know about, and generate a holistic understanding, of the middle class phenomenon in emerging markets; (ii) Formulate and advance a multi-disciplinary research agenda; and (iii) Facilitate the formation of collaborative research networks among scholars.
