Vestibulares 2009 REGIÃO NORTE Universidade Federal do Acre - 2009 Questions 26, 27, 28 and 29 refer to the TEXT A “Amazon deforestation” by Tim Hirsch from BBC News, São Paulo. The Brazilian environment minister has promised to publish today the names of the 100 people responsible for the largest acts of illegal deforestation in the Amazon. He promises to step up action to prevent destruction of the world’s largest tropical forest. Here’s Tim Hirsch: It’s more than eight months since the Brazilian government announced a package of measures to combat deforestation, after satellite observations showed 5 the rate of destruction in the Amazon was picking up again. So far, there’s been little evidence of a slowdown, despite a string of raids on illegal sawmills and moves to cut off credit to farmers operating outside the law. The latest initiative concentrates on the impunity with which illegal deforestation is still carried out in Brazil, according to the government’s own account. The environment minister Carlos Minc reckons that only one in ten offenders is prosecuted and fewer than one in 200 convicted in the courts. As 10 well as naming the top 100 deforesters, Mr. Minc is planning to set up a task force with the prosecuting authorities and environmental enforcement agencies, to ensure that more are brought to justice. He’s also promised to step up efforts to bring greater legality to farming and forestry activities in the regions of the Amazon where most deforestation has taken place. Television footage showed the rooftops of houses poking out of inundated towns and people using boats to move around in their cities. Mudslides swamped homes and forced residents to move in with relatives and pack into emergency shelters. Globo TV’s G1 website reported that three more people died in a mudslide in Bahia state, south of the main zone of devastation, but authorities did not immediately confirm the deaths. At least seven states, most in the Amazon region, have been affected by the rains, which have battered the region for several months, regional civil defence departments said. Worst-hit is the state of Maranhão along the Atlantic coast and south of the mouth of the Amazon River. Maranhão civil defence official Abner Ferreira said six major highways have been swamped, cutting off thousands of people and leaving lines of stranded cargo trucks. The rains also prompted the temporary closure of a railway that takes iron ore from the sprawling Carajas mine in the neighboring jungle state of Para. Iron ore, the main ingredient in steel, is shipped overseas from Sao Luis, the state capital of Maranhão. The railway also transports 1,300 people per day, and G1reported that service should be restored within two days. Vale is the world’s second largest mining company and the planet’s biggest iron ore producer. Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva flew over the hardest-hit areas, delivered food baskets to shelters, met with local officials and promised aid to repair infrastructure. He also voiced concerns that global climate change could be responsible for the unusually heavy rains and destruction.” We need to look more seriously into the climate situation these days,” said Silva. “Something is changing and we still have time to fix it.” Brazil’s health ministry said it would send an emergency shipment of 265,000 doses of medicine to Maranhão to prevent possible outbreaks of intestinal diseases caused by contaminated floodwaters. Ferreira said meteorologists forecast at least another two more weeks of heavy rains in northern Brazil. Floods and mudslides late last year in the southern state of Santa Catarina killed more than 100 people, displaced some 80,000 and set off a round of brutal looting in a devastated port city by people desperate for drinking water and food. (Richard Drew/Associated Press) I was reading today in The Times that organic food prices are rising. It reminded me of a really helpful list from the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research and advocacy organization, about how to be a strategic shopper when buying organic fruits and vegetables. While there is an ongoing debate about whether buying organic food really makes a difference in 5 terms of health, the reality is that some consumers choose organic foods because they want to lower their exposure to pesticides. For those shoppers, it makes sense to know when to buy organic and which conventionally-grown foods are good enough because they already are low in pesticide residue. The Environmental Working Group tested dozens of fruits and vegetables to determine which foods are the worst offenders in terms of pesticide exposure. Some fruits and vegetables grown with 10 conventional farming methods simply don’t absorb the pesticides. Some examples of vegetables and fruits with very low pesticide residues are onions, mangoes, asparagus, broccoli and eggplant. So whether you pick them up from the regular produce section or the organic aisle, your pesticide exposure is going to be low. 21 A partir da leitura do texto, assinale a afirmativa correta. The merry national atmosphere is quite different from the mood before Aug. 8, when officials worried about polluted air, terror attacks, even the performance of high-profile athletes like hurdler Liu Xiang. Some of their fears came to pass: a lone attacker killed an American coach’s family member, scattered protests did take place and Liu limped away gold-less after an injury. Still, the Olympics were undeniably a PR success. Beijing’s critics warned of crackdowns, but travelers were greeted instead with the sight of citizens reacting to the Games with cheers and tears against a backdrop of stunning architecture. For domestic audiences, officials peddled a relaxed, humane image – President Hu Jintao sat in the audience at sporting events like a regular spectator – that’s playing well at home. The Games Will have many legacies, from Michael Phelps to Usain Bolt. But for Beijing, its softpower campaign will do more for its overseas image in the years to come than cocky triumphalism ever could have done. Newsweek. September 1, 2008, p. 5 26 According to the text, it is CORRECT to state that: A) Most of the fears of Beijing’s officials came true during the Olympic Games, like terror attacks and crackdowns.
