educative! This 46th issue of Materials Research contains 22 original articles, and about 100 are under review. Figure 1 shows the number of authors of Mat. Res. papers working at Brazilian institutions and in other countries from 2005 to 2010. Its outstanding feature is that the percentage of foreign authors has always been small - fluctuated between 1-10% - but a very substantial increase was recently observed in the number of foreign authors, i.e. about 45% of the authors of the 2009 papers are foreign! As to the origin of these authors, they work in 30 different countries, lead by India, Argentina, USA and Mexico, in this order. It is still too early to confirm or not this tendency for the future (the 2010 data refer to the present issue), but this “phase transformation” was clearly nucleated by the recent indexation of Mat. Res. in the ISI database. These data indicate that Mat. Res. has now reached a significant level of international exposure. We thus expect that its impact factor will steadily increase in the next few years. Figure 1. Number of Brazilian and foreign authors of Mat. Res. papers. The data for 2010 refer to the present issue. Present statistics indicate that about 60% of the articles submitted to Mat. Res. are accepted (after minor or major corrections) and published. The time from submission to publication varies from 2 to 12 months, whereas the time for rejection varies from 1 to 6 months; the rate limiting factor being the review process. We take this opportunity to cordially ask our authors and readers - potential reviewers - to respond swiftly to our demands. From the rationale of the above paragraphs, it is clear that our present main goals are: to minimize the time of the review process and to further increase the international exposure of Material Research, both aiming to increase its impact factor. Materials Research is also published in electronic format at Scielo (www.scielo.br/mr). At p resent Materials Research is indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), which includes the Web of Science, ISI Alerting Service and Materials Science Citation Index (MSCI), Chemical Abstracts, World C eramic Abstracts, International Pool of Glass Abstracts, Scopus and Scielo. We gratefully acknowledge the Brazilian funding agencies CNPq and CAPES for their continuous support in covering most of the editorial and printing costs of Mat. Res. The help from the Department of Materials Engineering, Federal University of São Carlos DEMa/ UFSCar) for mailing expenses; the Vitreous Materials Laboratory LaMaV/UFSCar) for fax and telephone expenses are also acknowledged. Associação Brasileira de Metalurgia, Materiais e Mineração (ABM) and Associação Brasileira de Polímeros (ABPol) cover the editorial assistant’s salary. Associação Brasileira de Cerâmica – ABC, ABPol, and ABM have also helped advertising M aterials Research and managing its subscriptions and financial resources.
