Teaching and research interests My primary teaching and research interests lie in the fields of algorithmic composition, music cognition, artificial intelligence, evolutionary music and piano improvisation. I am currently finishing my PhD studies at the University of Plymouth in which I investigate various processes of music perception and cognition. I have designed and implemented a computer system (iMe - Interactive Musical Environments) in which intelligent agents are exposed to sets of music material that enable the emergence of new musical styles. The dynamics of the style evolution is studied by analysing the behaviour of the musical structures used by the agents during simulations of learning and compositional processes. 2. Education From October 2004: PhD “Ontogeny and Musical Style Evolution: A Computational Model”. School of Computing, Communications and Electronics University of Plymouth. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Eduardo Reck Miranda and Prof. Dr. Chris Johnson A synopsis of this research is attached. 2003: Master of Arts “Jazz Stylistic Features Through The Identification Of Vertical Structures In Bill Evans's Work”. Universidade Estadual de Campinas - Unicamp. Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Antonio Rafael Carvalho dos Santos and Prof. Dr. Jônatas Manzolli. The expression “vertical structure” is used to define the distribution of musical notes in the vertical dimension. It has connections with the idea of harmony but differs from it due to the absence of specific tonal centres. These structures were a distinct feature in Bill Evan’s sonority and in my Master’s degree research, in addition to a comprehensive qualitative study that included interviews with musicians that had personal contact with this influential pianist, I used computer modelling and statistical techniques to find recurring patterns in his vertical structures. 2 1989: Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes en Piano Conservatoire National de Musique, Danse et Art Dramatique de Cergy-Pontoise France 1987: Law BSc (Hons) Universidade de São Paulo - USP São Paulo, Brazil. 1981: Music Conservatory (Major in Piano) Conservatório Musical Carlos Gomes Campinas. Subjects included piano, music history, harmony, folklore and choir practice, among others. 3. Work Experience From 1982. Teacher of music. Since I graduated at the Conservatory, I have been teaching a number of music-related subjects such as piano performance and improvisation, music theory and harmony, counterpoint and computer music. Various locations. 2002. Piano improvisation teacher trainee at Universidade Estadual de Campinas Unicamp. I took part at the PED (“Programa Estágio Docente” - Teaching Trainee Program) during my Master’s degree, giving piano improvisation lessons. Campinas. 1989. Pianist at “Auberge L'Escale”. Blonville-Sur-Mèr, France. 1988 - 1990. Pianist at “Escola de Ballet Micheline Beauhaire”. Paris, France 1987. Piano instructor at the “XI Festival de Música de Prados - MG” (XI Prados Music Festival). Prados, Brazil. 1987. Music teacher at Centro Experimental Psico Pedagógico S.C. Jardim Escola Caracol. São Paulo. 1980 - 1985. Pianist at IBM Brasil Choir. Campinas. 1977 - 1981. Flutist at the Campinas Adventist Orchestra. Campinas. 4. Technical Skills • Broad experience with computer systems design and programming (C, C++, Objective-C and Cocoa). • Experience with the implementation of web-based data systems. • Extensive experience with music software (e.g. recording, sequencing, editorial). • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint, regularly used for academic purposes. 3 5. Software development 2007. Gimenes, M. iMe: Interactive Musical Environments. iMe is a real-time computer music system that promotes the interaction between human musicians and software agents through the practice of improvised music. It has been developed with Objective-C and Cocoa and is well suited to be used in areas such as the investigation of musical styles, the study of creativity as well as a generative tool for computer aided algorithmic composition. In addition, iMe can be used to evaluate how musical influence can lead to particular musical worldviews through processes involved in music perception and cognition. 6. Papers 2007.
