Não há palavras que convençam a nossa percepção. O trabalho de Ana Velez gira em torno
de conceitos como o lugar, a memória e o corpo, mas que importância pode ter o conceito
face ao olhar individual? No caso de Ana Velez pouca. Não se trata pois de um exercício
teórico sobre a pintura. E no entanto a escassez de meios, a exiguidade da paleta e formas
que sustentam os seus projectos assentam no extremo rigor discursivo dos conceitos que
defende. Poderíamos pois conceptualizar. Mas não, pelo menos eu não aconselho. O seu
sustento vem do nosso olhar. Da abertura do nosso olhar a uma outra escala, a um outro
lugar.
A capacidade de produzir algo de valor plástico com escassez de meios, preterindo o
espectáculo a favor de um silêncio que permanece, é porventura um dos exercícios mais
difíceis no campo das artes. Ana Velez tem essa capacidade que, sendo rara, é de enaltecer.
Num tempo em que a propaganda vence a criação; o espectáculo vence o recolhimento;
a ilusão vence a substância; a transitoriedade vence a perenidade, o conceito vence o ofício;
o dinheiro vence o conteúdo; o culto da celebridade vence o valor da personalidade...

There are no words to convince our perception. Ana Velez’ work revolves around concepts such as place,
memory and body, but what importance can the concept have when faced with the individual gaze? In
the case of Ana Velez, very little. It’s not a question of engaging in a theoretical exercise about painting.
And yet the scanty resources and the greatly reduced nature of the palette and forms that sustain her
projects are based on the extreme discursive rigour of the concepts that she defends. We might therefore
conceptualise. But no, I at least advise against it. Her sustenance comes from our gaze. From the opening
up of our gaze to another scale, to another place.
The capacity to produce something of artistic value with limited resources, disregarding the spectacle
in favour of an enduring silence, is perhaps one of the most difficult exercises in the field of the arts.
Ana Velez has that capacity, which, because of its rarity, is to be praised. At a time when propaganda
prevails over creativity; spectacle prevails over discretion; illusion over substance; transitoriness over
perpetuity, concept over practice; money over content; and the cult of the celebrity prevails over the value
of personality... Congratulations, Ana Velez.

The Social Centre project is a visual reflection on place as the container of memory. It presents the
architectural space of an existing social centre, albeit an abandoned one. In doing so, it also presents this
dichotomy between the place of social space, of a shared living space, and its renunciation. This project
takes the form of graphic documentation about the building, directing the spectators’ attention to their
own memories and to those of the individuals who have passed through there, since the perception
of architectural places, both in the spaces of the city and in architectural landscapes, triggers concrete
memories. Architectural places are always converted into the matrix of my works.

O projecto Centro Social é uma reflexão visual acerca do lugar como contentor da
memória. Apresenta o espaço arquitectónico de um centro social existente, mas que está
abandonado. Apresenta esta dicotomia entre o lugar de espaço social, de espaço de
convívio e a sua renúncia. Este projecto materializa-se em documentação gráfica acerca do
edificio, remetendo o espectador às suas próprias memórias e àquelas dos indivíduos que
por ali passaram, pois a percepção de lugares arquitectónicos, nos espaços da cidade e nas
paisagens arquitectónicas, desencadeiam memórias concretas. Os lugares arquitectónicos
convertem-se sempre na matriz das minhas obras.

BIOGRAPHY + CURRICULUM VITAE
Ana Velez was born in Lisbon, in 1982. She lives and works in Lisbon and Madrid [Spain].
She has a Master’s Degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, in 2011, where she also
took a first degree in Visual Arts – Painting, in 2007. In 2002/2003 and 2003/2004, she attended the Accademia
Albertina delle Belle Arte di Torino, Italy, under the Socrates-Erasmus programme.
She essentially works with drawing and painting, dealing with themes that revolve around the concept of identity,
based on three sub-concepts, place, memory and the body, in which she highlights place as the container of memory
and identity. Her activity has included a number of solo and group exhibitions held at various institutions, but also
several collective Urban Art projects. Her work is to be found in various institutional and private collections, both in
Portugal and abroad.

BIO + CURRICULUM VITAE
Ana Velez nasceu em Lisboa, em 1982. Vive e trabalha em Lisboa e Madrid [Espanha].
Mestrado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, 2011, onde também
se licenciou em Artes Plásticas – Pintura, 2007. Em 2002/2003 e 2003/2004 frequenta a Accademia
Albertina delle Belle Arte di Torino, Itália, no âmbito do programa Sócrates-Erasmus.
Trabalha essencialmente com o desenho e a pintura, abordando temáticas que giram em torno do
conceito de identidade, baseando-se em três conceitos, o lugar, a memória e o corpo, e ressaltando
o lugar como contentor da memória e identitário. A sua actividade tem sido marcada por exposições
individuais e colectivas no âmbito institucional, mas também por projectos colectivos de Arte Urbana.
O seu trabalho figura em várias colecções institucionais e privadas, nacionais e internacionais.
