MISSION STATEMENT
The Pan American School of Bahia prepares students to face challenges as confident,
principled global citizens. Our outstanding American and Brazilian programs, offered in
a safe and nurturing environment, empower students to reach their fullest potential.
PROFILE
The School: The Pan American School of Bahia (PASB), founded in 1960, is a private, co-educational
pre-school through 12th grade institution offering a college preparatory program based upon American
curriculum standards and teaching methods. As an American School, PASB is accredited by AdvanceEd
and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The primary language of instruction is English.
The school is also fully recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. PASB awards the American
High School Diploma, Brazilian Diploma, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, upon completion of
the required course work. The school is governed by a Board of Directors which includes eight elected
members. It is located in Patamares, a residential district 15 kilometers north of downtown Salvador.
High School Organization: The school year consists of four 9 week quarters. Classes begin at 7:45 am
and end at 2:30 pm. Students take classes in a block style schedule with periods ranging from 40 to 85
minutes.
Accreditation: The Pan-American School of Bahia is accredited by AdvanceED, the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools and the Brazilian Ministry of Education. In 2012 we became an IB
World School. PASB is a charter member of the Association of the American Schools of South America
(AASSA).
Faculty: There are 20 high school teachers and administrators, 10 of whom hold a Master’s degree and
1 holds a Doctorate. From 4 to well over 20 years of professional experience, our teachers come from
the United States, Brazil, Canada, Taiwan, Romania and Bolivia.

The majority of our student body (95%) earn a Brazilian High School diploma which requires
additional coursework in Geography, History, Spanish, Philosophy and Sociology.
Curriculum: In addition to the curriculum of standard college preparatory courses, the following IB
courses are offered:
IB English A1 HL, IB Portuguese A2 HL, IB Spanish B SL, IB Spanish AB SL, IB History HL,
IB Mathematics SL, IB Math Studies SL, IB Biology SL, IB Film HL.

Full IB Diploma – 13 students
3 + IB courses – 1 student
Non IB courses – 10 students
Grade Point Average: All courses are included in the cumulative grade point average. Quality points are
used to determine G.P.A., which is calculated at the end of grade nine and each semester thereafter. The
GPA is based on a 4.0 scale.
Rank: Students are not ranked due to our international status and the fluidity of our student body from
year to year.

90 – 92% = 3.7
87 – 89% = 3.3
83 – 86% = 3.0
80 – 82% = 2.7
77 – 79% = 2.3
100-90 = A 80 – 89 = B
73 – 76% = 2.0
70 – 72% = 1.7

Post Secondary Education: Based on the graduation survey, 100% of the PASB Class of 2013 continued
their education with 58% going to four year colleges and universities in the United States, 28% going to
Brazilian universities and 14% going to universities internationally.
Athletics: Basketball (Boys and Girls), Futsal (Boys), Soccer (Boys and Girls), Volleyball (Boys and
Girls), Our teams compete locally and against teams from across Brazil through the International
Schools Sports League (ISSL).
Student Activities: Community Service, Drama, Eco Club, Global Issues Network(GIN), Knowledge
Bowl, Model United Nations, Music Ensemble, National Honor Society, Student Council and Yearbook.
