Objetivos e estrutura curricular / Goals and curricular structure
O 2º Ciclo/Mestrado em Estudos Ingleses e Estudos Americanos é um curso de continuidade do 1º ciclo em Línguas
Modernas da FLUC, privilegiando o estudo da literatura, da cultura e da linguística de língua inglesa. Não se trata de
repetir o que se fez no 1º ciclo, mas sim de finalmente dar aos/às alunos/as a oportunidade de um estudo
especializado na(s) área(s) do seu interesse. O curso oferece, assim, três áreas de especialização, permitindo a
escolha dos Estudos Ingleses ou dos Estudos Americanos ou ainda a combinação das duas áreas. Pretende-se
consolidar, ao nível pós-graduado, o conhecimento de duas culturas que se unem pela língua e pela matriz cultural,
mas que se têm enriquecido e complexificado ao longo da sua história colonial, abrindo-se a outros mundos e
convertendo a língua inglesa e a cultura de língua inglesa numa das mais, se não a mais, influente no mundo.
Durante o 1º ano curricular os/as alunos/as são livres de escolher os seminários de uma e outra área, definindo a
sua especialização com a escolha do tema da dissertação.
The 2nd Cycle/Masters in English and American focuses on English language literatures, cultures and linguistics,
providing continuity to the B.A. (1st cycle) in Modern Languages offered by the Faculty of Letters of the University
of Coimbra. As such, it allows students to specialize in the area or areas in which they are particularly interested.
The program offers, thus, three areas of specialization: English Studies, American Studies or the combination of the
two. The program aims to deepen on the post-graduate level the study of two cultures united by language and a
shared cultural matrix, but which have been, throughout a history of colonialism, made richer and more complex by
opening up to and appropriating (in the broadest sense, 'translating') other worlds, thus making the English
language and its culture one of the most, if not the most, influential in the world.

Plano de Estudos (4 semestres: 120 ECTS)
Este curso prevê 6 seminários semestrais no 1º ano - 3 seminários por semestre (cada um com 10 ECTS): 1
seminário obrigatório (Metodologias, no 1º semestre, e Teorias, no 2º semestre) e 2 seminários opcionais,
escolhidos livremente do elenco oferecido em cada ano.
No 2º ano, a escrita da dissertação (45 ECTS) é acompanhada por 1 Seminário de Orientação (15 ECTS). O tema da
dissertação definirá a área da especialização.
Curricular Structure (4 semesters: – 120 ECTS)
The course requires 6 semestral seminars in the 1st year - 3 seminars per semester (10 ECTS each): the students
have 2 mandatory seminars (Methodologies in the 1st semester and Theories in the 2nd) and are free to choose
among the optional seminars that are offered each year to complete their credits.
In the 2nd year, they have to write their thesis (45 ECTS), accompanied by a Supervision seminar (15 ECTS). The
topic of the thesis defines the area of specialization (English Studies, American Studies or English and American
Studies).

1º semestre/1st semester:
Seminário obrigatório/Mandatory seminar – Metodologias – Maria José Canelo
O seminário visa proporcionar uma reflexão crítica acerca da leitura, análise, discussão e composição do texto
académico e das implicações teóricas e metodológicas de determinadas perspectivas. Complementarmente, através
de uma componente mais prática, procurar-se-á desenvolver, exercitar e consolidar métodos e instrumentos de
investigação, que apoiarão o trabalho desenvolvido noutros seminários, como a pesquisa bibliográfica, normas de
citação e referenciação de fontes, bem como aspectos da redação e estruturação do texto.
Methodologies
This seminar provides a critical reflection about reading, analyzing, discussing and writing an academic paper, as
well as about the theoretical and methodological implications of particular perspectives. In a complementary
manner, a more practical component will try to develop, exercise and consolidate research methods and tools with
a view to supporting the work prepared in other seminars, e.g. bibliographical research, quotation and reference
conventions, and matters of text composition and structure.

Cultura Inglesa A: “A Cidade e o Campo na Grã-Bretanha do pós-guerra” – Jacinta Matos
Pensado para funcionar em complementaridade com o seminário de Literatura Inglesa 2, o curso proporá um
estudo da sociedade britânica contemporânea que se centrará (mas não se esgotará) nas relações entre o urbano e
o rural. Partindo do pressuposto que esta dicotomia tradicional serviu durante séculos à auto- representação do
país, investigar-se-á a alteração a que a oposição tem vindo a ser sujeita nas últimas décadas em função das novas
condicionantes geopolíticas, económicas e sociais. Com base numa variedade de textos (escritos e fílmicos) de
diferentes géneros e proveniências, serão objecto de discussão e análise problemáticas que vão da utopia
subjacente às “New Towns” do pós-guerra à revitalização dos centros urbanos degradados; da legislação anti-caça à
criação da “Countryside Alliance”; da ênfase nas questões ambientais à expansão da indústria do património, entre
muitas outras pertinentes no contexto.
“The Country and the City in postwar Britain”
Designed to work in tandem with the English Literature course of semester 2, the course aims to provide an indepth knowledge of British society since WW II, with a special focus on the relations between the Country and the
City. Using a variety of materials both from literary and non-literary sources, as well as films and documentaries, the
course will discuss the changing dynamics between the rural and the urban in the last few decades. From the
utopian impulse of the “New Towns” to the regeneration of urban centres, from the Hunting Bill to the emergence
of the Countryside Alliance, from environmental concerns to the expansion of the Heritage Industry, we will study
and investigate some crucial aspects of contemporary British life and civilization.
Literatura Inglesa A: “Ficção de escritoras irlandesas contemporâneas” – Adriana Bebiano
O seminário abordará a produção ficcional de escritoras irlandesas contemporâneas, tanto da República da Irlanda
como da Irlanda do Norte (Ulster). Depois de uma abordagem panorâmica inicial, que pretende contextualizar
historicamente a ficção produzida por mulheres na Irlanda, será dada particular atenção a alguns contos e
romances de escritoras de renome que se encontram activas neste momento, nomeadamente Anne Enright,
Deirdre Madden, Emma Donughe e Kerry Hardie (ver bibliografia de referência).
Será discutida a forma como estas autoras reescrevem o papel das mulheres na identidade colectiva irlandesa e
reconfiguram a(s) sexualidade(s), a família e a cidadania.
“Contemporary Irish Women Writers’s Fiction”
This seminar will address the work of contemporary Irish women writers, north and south of the border. An initial
survey of the field will include the historical and cultural contextualization of the fiction produced by women both in
the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. This survey will be followed by analysis and discussion of tales,
short stories and novels by contemporary recognized authors, namely Anne Enright, Deirdre Madden, Emma
Donoghue e Kerry Hardie (see bibliography). Other authors will be brought into the discussion for a comparative
approach.
Discussion will be focused on women’s role and gender related issues, namely on the strategies used by the authors
in reconfigurations of the Irish national(ist) identity narrative, as well as of sexualities, (Irish) family and citizenship.

Cultura Americana A: “As Américas: perspetivas mútuas” – Maria José Canelo
Este seminário propõe-se seguir as metodologias e molduras teóricas da área emergente dos estudos
interamericanos, com ênfase no transnacionalismo. O objectivo principal é sensibilizar o/as estudantes para a
inevitável interdependência das histórias e culturas das várias regiões que compõem as Américas. Na medida em
que as Américas são uma invenção, procurar-se-á examinar as dimensões inter-americanas desse imaginário
através da justaposição e análise de documentos culturais que se propuseram definir e explicar as relações entre o
‘Norte’ e o ‘Sul’ das Américas. Os materiais a analisar incluem filmes, documentários, fotografia e textos literários e
teóricos.
“The Americas: Mutual Perspectives”
This seminar proposes to follow the methodologies and theoretical frames subscribed by the emergent field of
interamerican studies, with an emphasis on transnationalism. Its main goal is to raise awareness about the
inevitable interdependency of the histories and cultures of the varied regions that comprise the Americas. Insofar as
the Americas are an invention, we will seek to peruse the interamerican dimensions of this imaginary by way of
juxtaposing and analyzing cultural documents that have attempted to define and explain the relations between the
‘North’ and the ‘South’ of the Americas. Our study material will include film, documentaries, photography, and
literary and theoretical texts.
Literatura Americana A: “Vozes da diáspora africana nas Américas” – Isabel Caldeira
Este programa pretende analisar formas de representação da violência da privação de liberdade, história, memória
e voz em textos literários produzidos nos Estados Unidos e nas Caraíbas por escritoras de origem africana. Com a
ajuda de um enquadramento pós-colonial, sublinhando conceitos teóricos fundamentais como trauma, memória e
identidade, iremos reflectir sobre as diversas formas como as escritoras representam experiências de vida no
contexto de sociedades racializadas, pensam a identidade individual frente à identidade de grupo, estabelecem
relações com o passado e a história e procuram conquistar uma voz própria através de diferentes estratégias.
“Voices of the African Diaspora in the Americas”
This seminar proposes to identify and analyze forms of representation of the violence of deprivation of freedom,
history, memory, and voice in literary texts produced by women writers of African descent in the United States and
the Caribbean. Through a postcolonial theoretical frame, underlining fundamental concepts such as trauma,
memory and identity, the analysis will focus on different ways to represent life experiences in racialized societies,
the relation between individual and group identity, the connection established with the past and history, and the
various stategies to acquire a distinctive voice.

Linguística Inglesa A: “Multilinguismos” – Clara Keating
Este seminário tem como objectivo principal desenvolver uma reflexão simultaneamente sociocultural e discursiva
sobre o multilinguismo e o uso quotidiano da língua inglesa. Explora-se uma perspectiva performativa das línguas
(como actividade e acção semiótica situada), e procuram-se entender os mecanismos pragmático-discursivos,
materiais e multimodais, que articulam os usos de línguas (entre elas o inglês), os regimes de uso multilingue, os
contextos institucionais, e as ordens sociais mais vastas que os sustentam. Um enfoque no discurso e nas dinâmicas
locais de sentido que assumem a existência do multilinguismo como ponto de partida permite desenvolver
reflexões de natureza política e sociolinguística sobre os papéis dinâmicos que o inglês desempenha no mundo.
"Multilingualisms"
This seminar develops a sociocultural and discursive approach to multilingualism and the role of English in
contemporary multilingual social life. It explores a performative perspective on language as situated semiotic
activity by looking at material, multimodal, pragmatic and discursive aspects articulating local instances of use, the
regimes of language involved, institutional contexts and the broader social orders at play at local and global scales.
A linguistic ethnographic gaze on local discursive dynamics allows us to discuss the social and political nature of
English in the world.
2º semestre/2nd semester:
Seminário obrigatório/Mandatory seminar – Teorias: “Poética e Cidadania” – Graça Capinha
Este seminário desenvolve uma reflexão sobre o poder e a linguagem. Os seus dois objectos de estudo serão a
poesia L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E norte-americana e a poesia dos emigrantes portugueses nos EUA, enquanto exemplos
de literatura menor (Deleuze e Guattari), definida pela errância e pelo nomadismo.
Theories – “Poetics and Citizenship”
This seminar will reflect on the question of power and language. It concentrates on American L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E
School and the poetry written by Portuguese immigrants in the USA, as two major examples of minor literature
(Deleuze & Guattari), defined by errancy and nomadism.

Cultura Inglesa B: “Regresso ao passado?: A construção da cidade industrial britânica” – Isabel Donas
Botto
Neste seminário, centrado no estudo interdisciplinar da paisagem urbana oitocentista, inclui-se no final uma
reflexão sobre o impacto cultural e sociológico, na actualidade, da imagem de cidade construída durante a época
vitoriana.
Aspectos abordados: representações da cidade na literatura e pintura oitocentistas; a cartografia da desigualdade
social na cidade vitoriana; o combate à “fealdade industrial e urbana” denunciada por grande número de escritores,
críticos sociais e artistas vitorianos; a influência do medievalismo na reconfiguração do espaço urbano oitocentista;
a cidade como veículo de expressão do orgulho cívico da burguesia vitoriana; o crescimento da cidade como espaço
de consumo e lazer; visões utópicas e distópicas da cidade do futuro no final do século XIX/princípio do século XX.

“A Return to the past? Perspectives and visions of the British 19 century industrial city”
This course provides an interdisciplinary study of the British nineteenth-century urban landscape, marked by a
staggering and unplanned growth whose social and cultural repercussions are still felt today.
The following themes will be discussed: the municipal civic pride of the Victorian bourgeoisie; mapping social
inequality in the Victorian city; the growth of the city as the locus for consumption and leisure; the impact of
medievalism on the reconfiguration of the urban landscape; the indictment of urban and industrial “ugliness” by
Victorian writers, social critics and artists; representations of the city in Victorian literature and painting; utopian
and dystopian visions of the city of the future in turn-of-the-century English literature.
Literatura Inglesa B: “Cidade, Utopia e Cidadania” – Jacinta Matos
Sendo a expansão inelutável do urbano um dos fenómenos centrais das sociedades contemporâneas, o curso
procurará reflectir sobre formas de representação da Cidade na literatura inglesa dos últimos três séculos. A
abordagem convocará uma perspectiva multidisciplinar sobre a Cidade, encarando-a nas suas múltiplas dimensões
– cultural e sociológica, geográfica e antropológica, real e imaginária, instrumental e utópica, objectiva e projectiva.
Investigar-se-á também a relação entre Cidade e cidadania no mundo urbano generalizado, difuso e globalizado da
actualidade.
“The City, Utopia and Citizenship”
The course will study literary representations of the City in English Literature of the past three centuries. Using as
far as possible a multidisciplinary approach, we will consider the various dimensions of the urban – cultural and
sociological, geographic and anthropological, real and imaginary, instrumental and utopian, objective and projective
– and the ways in which writers have responded to the ever-changing configuration of the City. The relationship
between the City and citizenship throughout the ages will also be discussed, with a particular emphasis on our
contemporary, globalized world.

Cultura Americana B1: “Imigração e Cidadania: Histórias da História dos Estados Unidos” – Teresa
Tavares
Percorrer-se-á a história dos Estados Unidos da América tendo como foco principal as migrações, desde o período
colonial até ao final do século XX. Que implicações tiveram as sucessivas vagas migratórias para a construção da
identidade nacional? Como é que os grupos sociais dominantes viram em diferentes momentos históricos o impacto
dos novos imigrantes sobre a sociedade e cultura americanas? Quais as expectativas e perspectivas dos diversos
grupos de imigrantes sobre os Estados Unidos? Como se processou a sua “americanização”? Estas são algumas das
questões orientadoras deste seminário, que procurará explorar sobretudo os diversos contextos económicos,
sociais e políticos dos debates sobre a cultura e identidade nacional.
“Immigration and Citizenship: (Hi)stories of US History”
This seminar provides an overview of US history focusing on migrations from the colonial period to the end of the
20th century. What have been the implications of the successive migratory waves for the construction of a national
identity? How have dominant social groups viewed, in different historical moments, the impact of immigrants on
American culture and society? What have been the expectations and views of different groups of immigrants
concerning the United States? How have immigrants become Americanized? These are some of the questions that
will guide our discussion in this seminar, which will primarily explore the different economic, political and social
contexts of the debates on national identity and culture.
Cultura Americana B2: “Movies and Music” – Stephen Wilson
This is not a course about musicals in the conventional sense, although it does include a number of musicals, but a
course of films that are in some sense about music, that have a musical theme or background or which make
significant use of music. The course begins with THE JAZZ SINGER, the first feature length film with extended
sequences of synchronized singing and speech, and ends with Martin Scorsese’s 2005 film portrait of Bob Dylan, NO
DIRECTION HOME. With a single exception all the films are American and they cover the range of American popular
music from Jazz Age jazz to contemporary (or near contemporary) rock. Movies and music were the two great

American popular art forms of the 20 . Century and to consider them thus in conjunction afford a valuable insight
into the two arts themselves and into the social, cultural and institutional context in which they flourished.

Linguística Inglesa B: “Contact Linguistics” – John Holm
This seminar examines how new language varieties developed in the Americas, analyzing the sociolinguistic
processes that led to pidginization and creolization. There is particular focus on the relationship between the social
setting of the contact and the nature of the linguistic outcome. The second part of the semester examines the
nature of the social factors in contact situations that led not to creoles but rather to vernaculars that are only
partially restructured, like African American English and Brazilian Vernacular Portuguese.
