PRODUCTION
BRAZIL
Brazil is among the countries with the greatest
potential for organic production in the world. In
addition of having approximately 1 million hectares
of certified crop, it has nearly 7 million hectares
where the extractive organic harvest is underway.
The annual market for organic products in Brazil is
approximately 300 million dollars, of which 30% are
sold in the country and 70% are for export, with a
growth of approximately 25% per year. In Brazil, the
organic production is an activity that is in full
expansion among family farmers and land reform
settlers. Recent data show that about 80% of 20
thousand Brazilian organic producers are family
producers.
In Brazil, the organic production activity has a
legislation that supports its development and aims
at fostering the sector. Law No. 10831, of 2003, and
his Decree of 2007, democratically built with the
participation of the Brazilian society, contain the
necessary criteria for the characterization and the
differentiation of a product as an organic one. Some
important advances are ascertained, such as the
existence of a single organic seal and the possibility
of other mechanisms for conformity assessment for
the internal market.
The Brazilian Federal Government, through the
Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), has
developed numerous and significant actions to
promote the production and consumption of
organic products and those from production
systems of ecological basis in recent years. The
main actions are: effective participation in the
construction of the Brazilian legal framework
through the support from the family farming
segments; capacity building of more than 100
thousand technicians and farmers; research and
technological development; productive credit and
improvement of the production and marketing
infrastructure; program for the acquisition of food
with the purchase of organic products with a value
exceeding 30%; and support to the certification of
250 groups of family farmers. In addition, the MDA
gives support to the participation in business fairs
at the national and international levels, such as the
BioFach. A total of more than 100 million dollars
were invested in 6 years of government.
For the BioFach in Germany, the MDA gave support
to the participation of 40 cooperatives and
associations of family farmers since the 2003
edition.

The Brazilian wealth may be found in the abundance
of its socio-biodiversity, through its products and its
people, traditional communities and family farmers
with their ways of life and production; in addition to
its natural resources such as water and soils in
quantity and quality. A real world barn.
