In 1959, it was inaugurated as a National Palace and opened to the public as a museum, exhibiting a collection of Decorative Arts from the 17th and 18th centuries. Amongst the various collections, attention is drawn to the group of tapestries from Pastrana, which represent a valuable testimony to the history of the Portuguese Discoveries; the porcelains from the Portuguese East India Company; the Portuguese faience pieces; Flemish and French tapestries; weapons and armour; various paintings and furniture from the post-Discoveries period Museum Passes from the IMC (Institute of Museums and Conservation).
