No one keeps the fourth commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother" better than the incarnate Son of God, who is also son of Mary. The Assumption of Mary is also the supernatural effect of her Immaculate Conception. Her "dormitio" -- or death -- was a separation of spirit from body, not as a result of disease or corporal decay, but in virtue of her perfect discipleship. The Mother desired to share in all that her Savior-Son experienced. She shared in Jesus' redemptive death as a co-redemptrix, and she also shared in the Redeemer's three days of separation of soul and body after the victory of the cross and the eventual resurrection of the body. The Son experiences the Ascension by his own power; the Mother experiences the Assumption by the Son's power. The Immaculate Virgin's assumption into heaven is an eschatological sign of hope for the Church. We, too, if we persevere in joining ourselves to the life and death of the Redeemer, can joyfully await the resurrection of our Outreach bodies on the last day. Her Assumption into Heaven, body and soul, gives us hope and joy as we are called to share in Her blessedness. Like Mary, we are promised the fullness of the resurrection, body and soul, at the second coming of Christ, Her Son and our God. Our Parish Festa is the celebration of our hope in the glorious future of those who follow Jesus. We enter these mysteries through beautiful Eucharistic celebrations, times of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, the Sacra- ment of Reconciliation, the rosary and processions. We express our Christian joy in fellowship, meals, music, songs, dancing, games and other events as we have annually since 1973. Welcome to this Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption! We are grateful for your participation. We, especially, welcome visitors. We have a special gratitude for the donors who give from Tulare to Sacramento and throughout the Bay Area. We are grateful to all who have worked tirelessly to make this Festa possible: President Agnel and Lina Bettencourt, Vice-President Victor and Dora Lopes, Secretary Francisco and Elsa Rebelo, Treasurer Helder and Albertina de Sousa, and the many members of the Festa Committee and other volunteers. We appreciate the presence of Fr. Thomaz Fernandez in our community. He generously took time during his vacation to preach the Word of God to us. It is also our privilege to welcome Bishop Stephen Blaire who is presiding at the cession on Sunday afternoon. concluding Festa pro- Our heavenly Father is glorified in Mary’s YES to the incarnation of his Son and in Her following of Him all the way to Calvary. He is also glorified in the generous efforts and sacrifices on the part of so many who made our Festa possible. The Parish Community is thus enabled to financially serve God’s purposes throughout the year. Happy Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption! Fr. Manuel F. Sousa
