" The word hell has had a checkered career in the history of the church. And it wasnt hugely important in the
early days. It was important, but not nearly as important as it became in the middle ages. And the in the
middle ages, you get this polarization of heaven over here and hell over there, and you have to go to one place
or the other eventually. So you have the Sistine Chapel, with that great thing behind the altar. This enormous
great judgment seat, with the souls going off into these different directions. Very interestingly, I was sitting in
the Sistine chapel just a few weeks ago. I was sitting for a service, and I was sitting next to a Greek
Orthodox...who said to me, looking at the pictures of Jesus on one wall. He said, these I can understand. The
pictures of Moses on the other wall, he said, those I can understand. Then he pointed at the end wall of
judgment, and said, that I cannot understand. Thats how you in the west have talked about judgment and
heaven and hell. He said, we have never done it that way before, because the bible doesnt do it that way. I
thought, whoops. I think hes right actually. And whether youre Catholic or Protestant, that scenario which is
etched into the consciousness of Western Christianity really has to be shaken about a bit. Because if heaven
and earth are to join together. Its not a matter of leaving earth and going to heaven. Its heaven and earth
joined together. And hell is what happens when human beings say, the God in whose image they were made,
we dont want to worship you. We dont want our human life to be shaped by you. We dont want, who we are
as humans to be transformed by the love of Jesus dying and rising for us. We dont want any of that. We want
to stay as we are and do our own thing. And if you do that, what youre saying is, you want to stop being image
bearing human being within this good world that God has made. And you are colluding with your own
progressive dehumanization. And that is such a shocking and horrible thing, that its not surprising that the
biblical writers and others have used very vivid and terrifying language about it. But, people have picked that
up and said, this is a literal description of reality. Somewhere down there, there is a lake of fire, and its got
worms in it and its got serpents and demons and there coming to get you. But I think actually, the reality is
more sober and sad than that, which is this progressive shrinking of human life. And that happens during this
life, but it seems to be that if someone resolutely says to God, Im not going to worship you...its not just Ill not
come to church. Its a matter of deep down somewhere, there is a rejection of the good creator God, then that
it the choice humans make. In other words, I think the human choices in this life really matter. Were not just
playing a game of chess, where tomorrow morning God will put the pieces back on the board and say, Ok that
was just a game. Now were doing something different. The choices we make here really do matter. Theres part
of me that would love to be a universalist, and say, itll be alright. Everyone will get there in the end. I
actually...the
choices
you
make
in
the
present
are
more
important
than
that."
"O inferno palavra teve uma carreira de xadrez na história da igreja. E não era muito importante nos primeiros dias. Foi
importante, mas não quase tão importante quanto tornou-se na idade média. E a na idade média, você receber essa
polarização do céu aqui e ali o inferno, e você tem que ir para um lugar ou outro, eventualmente. Então você tem a
Capela Sistina, com aquela coisa grande por trás do altar. Este tribunal enorme grande, com as almas saindo para essas
direções diferentes. Muito interessante, eu estava sentado na capela Sistina apenas algumas semanas atrás. Eu estava
sentado para um serviço, e eu estava sentado ao lado de um ortodoxo grego ... que me disse, olhando para o imagens
de Jesus em uma parede. Ele disse, estes eu posso entender. As fotos de Moisés sobre a outra parede, disse ele,
aqueles que eu possa entender. Então ele apontou para a parede final do julgamento, e disse que eu não consigo
entender. Isso é como vocês no Ocidente têm falado sobre o julgamento e céu e inferno. Ele disse, nós nunca fizemos
isso dessa maneira antes, porque a bíblia não fazê-lo dessa maneira. eu pensei, gritos. Eu acho que ele é bem verdade.
E se você está católica ou protestante, esse cenário que está gravado na consciência do cristianismo ocidental
realmente tem que ser abalado um pouco sobre. Como se o céu ea terra estão a se juntar. Não é uma questão de
deixar a Terra e ir para o céu. Seu céu e da terra unidas. E o inferno é o que acontece quando os seres humanos
dizem, o Deus em cuja imagem foram feitos, nós não queremos te adorar. Nós não queremos que a nossa vida humana
a ser moldada por você. Nós não queremos, quem somos como seres humanos para ser transformado pelo amor de
Jesus morrer e ressuscitar por nós. Nós não queremos nada disso. Queremos ficar o que somos e fazemos nossa
própria coisa. E se você fizer isso, o que você está dizendo é, você quer deixar de ser humano portador imagem estar
dentro deste mundo bom que Deus fez. E você é conivente com a sua própria desumanização progressiva. E isso é uma
coisa tão chocante e horrível, que não é surpreendente que os escritores bíblicos e outros ter usado uma linguagem
muito vívida e terrível sobre isso. Mas, as pessoas têm que escolheu-se e disse, esta é uma descrição literal da
realidade. Em algum lugar lá embaixo, há um lago de fogo, e seus vermes tenho nele e suas serpentes e demônios e
tenho lá vindo para você . Mas eu acho que na verdade, a realidade é mais sóbrio e triste do que isso, que é esta
contração progressiva da vida humana. E o que acontece durante esta vida, mas parece ser que, se alguém diz
resolutamente a Deus, eu não estou indo para adorar você ... não é só o mal não ir à igreja. É uma questão de fundo
em algum lugar, há uma rejeição do bom Deus criador, então, que os seres humanos fazem escolhas. Em outras
palavras, penso que as escolhas humanas neste questão de vida realmente. não estavam apenas jogando um jogo de
xadrez, onde amanhã de manhã Deus vai colocar as peças de volta na mesa e dizer: Ok que era apenas um jogo. Agora
estava fazendo algo diferente. As escolhas que fazemos aqui realmente importam. Theres parte de mim que gostaria
de ser um universalista, e dizer, itll ficar bem. Todo mundo vai chegar lá no final. eu realmente ... as escolhas que você
faz no presente é mais importante do que isso.

"According to the new testament, the time line says that you die, and if
you belong to Jesus Christ, then you will be with him, which is the best
thing you could possibly imagine. Its a time of rest. A time of
refreshment. And delight. I dont think it will be an unconscious time.
But its hard to describe, who we will be at that point. We can use the
word, soul, if you like. But the bible doesnt use the word soul, that
often. So its not necessarily a great help to know if that the best way
of talking about it. But then after that time, and its hard to say whether
we will experience it for a long time or not, but there are some things
that we might. Then God will do something quite new, with the whole
creation. And all those who have been, in that resting mode if you like,
will be raised from the dead, and will be the new inhabitants of this
new heaven and earth together, which God will make. Which will be
both very like what we presently know, and quite unlike, because there
will be no death, no corruption, no decay. Its hard for us because our
minds are conditioned by a lot of Western philosophical thought. Its
hard for us to imagine an non corruptible physicality. A body that wont
be corruptible and decay. But that is what were promised. And its
actually very exciting even though its hard to imagine."

toda a criação. e todos aqueles que têm sido, em que o modo de repouso, se
quiser, vai ser ressuscitado dentre os mortos, e será os novos habitantes
deste novo céu e da terra juntos, o que Deus vai fazer. qual será tanto gosta
muito do que nós atualmente sabe, e bem diferente, pois não haverá morte,
nem a corrupção, não decadência. é difícil para nós, porque nossas mentes
estão condicionadas por uma série de filosófico ocidental pensei. é difícil para
nós imaginar uma fisicalidade não corruptível. Um corpo que costuma ser
corruptível e decadência. Mas isso é o que foi prometido. e sua realmente
muito emocionante mesmo é difícil de imaginar. "

"Its not entirely clear. But one thing is clear. And that is that those who belong
to Jesus Christ in the present will actually, and I hesitate to say this because
it sounds arrogant or triumphatalistic, but its what the new testament says,
Those who belong to Jesus Christ will be running the new world, as Gods
stewards. But take away all the sting of the idea of running things as being
wicked bosses or forcing everybody to do this or that. Because the model of
leadership and of ruling which is there, is that of Jesus himself. That of the
gentle shepherd. That of the steward. Is that of the one who says, if anyone
wants to be great they must be your servant. So, again and again, in Paul, in
Revelation, and elsewhere, there is this sense that if you have learned in this
life to look after the bit of the world that God has given you, which might be
your own body, your family, might be business, a church, whatever. Then this
is preparing you to help God look after his new creation. And thats awesome.
I dont think Ive ever heard a sermon on that. But it is right there in the texts.
And one of the loveliest lines of the text right at the end of the bible, it says,
that out of the New Jerusalem, there flows a river and the river has trees on
either side of it. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
So there is a project of healing in Gods new world. What that means I really
have very little idea. But it sounds full of hope and possibility."

pertencem a Jesus Cristo no presente realmente, e eu hesito em dizer isso

modelo de liderança e de decisão que está lá, é que do próprio Jesus. de que o
pastor gentil. Isso do mordomo. é que de quem diz, se alguém quer ser
grande que deve ser seu servo. Então, novamente e novamente, em Paulo, em
Apocalipse, e em outros lugares, há neste sentido que se você aprendeu nesta
vida para cuidar do pouco do mundo que Deus lhe deu, o que poderia ser o
seu próprio corpo, sua família, pode ser um negócio, uma igreja, seja qual for.
então este é prepará-lo para ajudar a Deus cuidar de sua nova criação. E isso
é incrível. eu não acho que Ive ouviu um sermão sobre isso. Mas é ali mesmo
nos textos. E uma das mais belas linhas de texto à direita na final da Bíblia,
que diz, que fora da Nova Jerusalém, não flui um rio eo rio tem árvores em
ambos os lados. e as folhas da árvore são para a cura das nações. Portanto, há
um projeto de cura em Deuses novo mundo. O que isso significa que eu
realmente não tenho idéia muito pouco. Mas parece cheio de esperança e
possibilidade. "
