António Almeida, Porto, Portugal Monday 29th October 2012 Introduction We are delighted to announce a one day symposium on “Darwinian evolution and clonal heterogeneity in human cancer–biological and clinical implications” with Keynote speaker Carlos Caldas. This will take place on Monday 29th October, 2012 at the Fundação Eng. António Almeida, Porto, Portugal for up to 180 participants. The notion that tumours are ecosystems of clones driven by mutations is not new but has been firmly confirmed with cancer genome sequencing. The biological and clinical implications of tumour heterogeneity will be discussed. Besides the session featuring the Keynote Speaker’s presentation, this one day symposium will promote work done in the field of cancer and epigenetics by Portuguese researchers. We will focus on: * Methods for identification and profiling epigenetic events in cancer * Cancer models with genetic alterations that affect epigenetic states * Non-mutagenic phenotype plasticity – epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cancer initiating/stem cells Following the Symposium: Meeting of the Portuguese Division of EACR for all those present that wish to participate in the creation of an “Associação Portuguesa de Investigação em Cancro” Abstracts and Awards We invite everyone who may be interested in presenting their research to submit an abstract. We especially encourage young researchers to present their work and apply for one (1) of two (2) Young Investigator Awards of €500, which will be offered to one (1) PhD student and one (1) early Postdoc with less than three (3) years postdoctoral experience. Eighty-eight (88) researchers will be selected to present their work. From these, eight (8) will be selected for oral presentation and eighty (80) for Poster presentation. The oral presentations and prize winners will be selected by a mixed international/national committee presided over by Prof. Julio Celis, current President of EACR. We hope that you will be able to join us in Porto on Monday 29th October, 2012 and contribute to this exciting meeting.
