Abstract Water Framework Directive addresses and regulates the chemical status in water by focusing on Priority Substances, so there is a growing need to consider the emerging pollutants. In this context, Pharmaceuticals have emerged as a major group of environmental contaminants over the past decade but relatively little is known about their occurrence, fate and fate. International Seminar Pharmaceuticals in the Environment: Overview and future Albeit in trace amounts they are of great concern given their continuous introduction into the environment. Recently, the new pharmacovigilance legislation (Directive 2010/84/EU and Regulation EC No 1235/2010), have recognized their impact on ecosystems and human health. Therefore, the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of medicinal products has to be evaluated and appropriate legislation has already been issued in the European Union (EU). Organizations at the international level are increasingly and intensively engaged in this debate. This seminar should contribute to the discussion and networking amongst academia, regulators, industry and other stakeholders to create possible integrated solutions.
