2014 World Day for Audiovisual Heritage www.worldavheritage.org The theme for this year's celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2014 is "Archives at Risk - Much More to Do!” This theme was carried through to two posters designed for the 2014 World Day celebration. To celebrate UNESCO World Audio-visual Archive Heritage day 2014 the CCAAA is re-launching the Archives@Risk website. CCAAA issued a new declaration: The CCAAA represents the world network of audiovisual archives and in a “New Declaration” its members hereby commit to work together in a shared vision and common purpose to support & promote projects or programs aimed at preserving and safeguarding endangered audiovisual archive heritage throughout the world. The CCAAA strongly advocates for audiovisual archives as valuable international as well as national cultural resources reflecting all aspects of human life and activity which should be afforded safeguarding on a par with other recognised world cultural heritage. However, in many countries audiovisual archive collections are endangered as a result of poor environmental conditions, natural disaster, political upheavals, war, lack of funding and often by a lack of cultural appreciation. As part of the "New Declaration" the CCAAA will promote its members shared vision to safeguard these archives through a new Archives@Risk portal - celebrating achievements, registering challenges as well as providing an important platform to highlight at-risk archives; to facilitate links with members and supporters and to inspire new programs and projects, funding and cooperation. As the first stage of this vision the CCAAA is proud to celebrate UNESCO World Day for AudioVisual Heritage by relaunching the Archives@Risk website. www.ArchivesatRisk.com AMIA |2014 World Day for Audiovisual Projects 1 AMIA Member Projects ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WITNESS WITNESS released this month in celebration of American Archives Month and World Day for Audiovisual Heritage! European policy-makers have only recently started taking into account film heritage. Digital technology seems to have been the driving force as a number of digitization projects have been initiated around Europe with mixed results (Images for the Futures, BBC Digital Media, European Film Gateway). At the same time, an increasing number of scholars in film and media studies began considering the importance of engaging with film heritage. These engagements were often driven by the perceived potentialities that digital technology offer in restoring and providing access to collections. This focus often seems to obscure underlying questions and concerns related to the relationship between access, conservation and preservation. To this end the meeting seeks to examine three fundamental questions: Should policymakers support film heritage preservation and audience development with more conviction and why does it matter? Why might it be important to systematically integrate archival discourse into Film and Media Studies? What are the practical initiatives that archives, universities and policy-makers need to focus on and support? Admission is FREE but registration is required. For more information write to [email protected]. AVPreserve In celebration of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on October 27th, AVPreserve is releasing several new or updated white papers that provide guidance on the preservation and management of audiovisual and digital media collections. To start, we have translated five of our white papers into Spanish in order to increase accessibility for a global audience. These first five papers cover processing of AV collections, preservation of optical media, cloud storage for archives, disaster recovery, and an introduction to Codecs. We hope to continue translating our resources and look to feedback on our efforts and future requests. The Spanish language papers can be downloaded for free at http://www.avpreserve.com/papers-and-presentations/documento-tecnico-de-lengua-espanola/ Second, given the increasing ingest of born digital and digitized materials in all archives, we are releasing introductory tutorials (for Mac and Windows) on the use of the Command Line Interface (CLI) for managing files in an archival environment. CLI is a necessary tool for ingest, processing, storage, and monitoring of file-based collections, and the growth of almost all archives to include digital collections will require an understanding of how to use CLI and CLI-based software for collection care. The tutorials can be downloaded for free a thttp://www.avpreserve.com/papers-and-presentations/anintroduction-to-using-the-command-line-interface-to-work-with-files-and-directories/. In the coming months we will also be releasing a series of web tutorials on the use of various free and open source applications for digital collection care, similar to our web tutorial on ExifTool, a powerful application for reviewing and editing embedded metadata in digital files http://www.avpreserve.com/exiftooltutorial-series/. Also be sure to check out Chris Lacinak’s recent keynote presentation on our Cost of Inaction Calculator from last week’s Fédération Internationale des Archives de Télévision / The International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) World Conference. The COI Calculator is a planning tool that provides estimated budgets and schedules over the longterm so that one can begin to develop a preservation plan for beyond the immediate near term. By looking at the costs of physical storage and management, digitization, and digital storage, an institution can think about distributing costs over time AMIA |2014 World Day for Audiovisual Projects 4 while also considering the critical need for sustainability of preservation activities (and their associated costs) beyond short term fund raising or grants. Happy World Day, everyone! AMIA |2014 World Day for Audiovisual Projects 5 Image Process: A Fundraiser for the Western Front Archive The Archive plays an integral role in the preservation and dissemination of Western Front’s rich history and the contemporary art history of British Columbia. Proceeds support the Western Front Archive, an important collection of works spanning a 41-year history. The money raised will help us to digitize and make accessible past works that face loss of information due to obsolescence and deterioration. http://front.bc.ca/events/image-process/ ___________________________________________________ World Audiovisual Heritage Day in Brazil supported by ABPA (Brazilian Association of Audiovisual Preservation) Dia Mundial do Patrimônio Audiovisual será celebrado em todo o Brasil Em 2005, a UNESCO instituiu a data de 27 de outubro como o Dia Mundial do Patrimônio Audiovisual, de modo a chamar a atenção para a importância da preservação das imagens em movimento. ABPA: https://www.facebook.com/abpa.preservacao.audiovisual (English translation) Cinemateca Brasileira and the International Film Festival of São Paulo gather once again to celebrate the World Day of Audiovisual Heritage.
