CINEMA DO BRASIL© AT THE AMERICAN FILM MARKET 2011 Brazilian contingent to consist of 14 associated members of the Program The Programa Cinema do Brasil and the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations joined forces to take a delegation of 14 Brazilian producers and distributors to the American Film Market, to be held from November 2 to 9, in the city of Los Angeles, in the United States. The Brazilian participation will also include the showing of 5 films in the Market Screenings event, one of the foremost international showcases for full-length feature films. Throughout the course of this event, Cinema do Brasil will be running a stand at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel (Office 759), opening up a space so that the participants in the American Film Market may have the opportunity to see recent productions and also to hold business meetings with the Brazilian companies present at the event. The Brazilian contingent will be comprised of Sérgio Sá Leitão (Rio Filme), Marcus Baldini and Michele Matsumoto (Damasco Filmes), Leda Stopazzolli (Bananeira Filmes), Geórgia Costa Araújo (Coração da Selva), Márcio de Lemos (Latitude 23 Filmes), Guilherme Keller (Querosene Filmes), Paulo Boccato (Glaz Entretenimento), David Schurmann (Schurmann Film Company), Eduardo Senna (Gemini), Luiz Gonzaga Tubaldini Jr. (Latinamerica), Priscila Rosário (Tucumán Filmes), Maurício Vedovato (Lotus Holding) and Roberto Moreira (of the State of São Paulo’s Audiovisual Industry Guild - SIAESP). The American Film Market is an event that has been held since 1981 and that receives more than 8 thousand visitors each year, including executives, sales agents, lawyers, directors, distributors, film financers, producers and other professionals from more than 70 different countries. The participants are given the opportunity to discover more than 400 different films in a total of 800 screenings. The event also represents an excellent opportunity for presenting films and projects to potential international partners. The excellent work done by the producers and agents in Brazil, allied with the efforts of Cinema do Brasil®, have generated a large volume of international sales and a considerable increase in the number of co-productions. Since the time it was created up until July 2009, of the 147 companies that took part in the program, 73 indicated that business between Brazil and other countries had surpassed the figure of BRL$ 64 million, with the sale of 239 audiovisual products. In these years, Germany, Canada, Spain and France were the countries with which the flow of trade was most significant. In 2010, the volume of business carried out amounted to US$ 45.8 million, with the closing of 25 co-production deals, 23 films chosen to participate in major festivals and 540 international sales made, with special mention to several success stories, such as Lixo Extraordinário, coproduction with O2 Filmes, shown in the United States with International Distribution Support from Cinema do Brasil®, being indicated for the 2011 Oscar Awards in the category for Best Documentary; Viajo Porque Preciso, Volto Porque Te Amo, by REC Produtores Associados, Brazil participated in 31 international festivals and won seven awards; the Rio Film Commission negotiated BRL$5 M in co-productions to be filmed in Rio de Janeiro, and Coração da Selva, who carried out a co-production with Spain, negotiated products/services in four events promoted by Cinema do Brasil® at a total of BRL$10 M. A number of important names from the film market were also present at events put on by the program over the course of the 2010, such as the director of the Marché du Film de Cannes, Jerôme Paillard; the chairman of the Locarno International Film Festival, Olivier Père; the director of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, Sonja Heinen, and the chairman of the Cinecittà Luce, Roberto Cicutto. The Program was developed by SIAESP – the State of São Paulo’s Audiovisual Industry Guild, in partnership with APEX Brasil – the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, connected to the Brazilian Ministry of Overseas Development, Industry and Commerce and the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, by way of the Audiovisual Department.
