ANP enacts new rules regarding Biomethane
ANP RESOLUTION No. 8 OF JANUARY 30, 2015
On January 30, 2015, the Brazilian Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (Agência Nacional
do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis – “ANP”) enacted Resolution No. 8/2015 (“Resolution”).
Such Resolution establishes the specifications for biomethane of national origin, according to Technical
Regulation No. 1/2015 (“Technical Regulation”), which is attached as an integral part of the Resolution.
This Resolution is applicable to biomethane derived from organic agrosilvopastoral products and
residues for use in vehicles, as well as in residential and commercial facilities.
Amongst its provisions, we highlight the following:

the Resolution establishes the rules for the use and quality control of such biomethane;
the specifications set out in the Technical Regulation must be complied with in the marketing
of biomethane;
the biomethane may be blended with natural gas, if it meets the particular specification
contained in the Technical Regulation;
It should also be mentioned that the biomethane is interchangeable with natural gas distributed in
the Northeast, Midwest, Southeast and Southern regions of Brazil. The safety requirements are the
same for both natural gas and biomethane in respect of compression, distribution and resale.
On the other hand, biomethane obtained from urban solid waste and sanitary sewage waste may
only be used for experimental purposes, subject to ANP’s prior approval.

This Resolution is the result of public hearing No. 28/2014, which was held from October 29, 2014 to
November 24, 2014, and is the first specific regulation for biomethane in Brazil.
