Ethanol Certification Greenergy Certifies Sustainability of São Martinho’s ethanol The European standard anhydrous ethanol produced by the São Martinho Mill located in Pradópolis, São Paulo, a unit of the São Martinho Group, received on January 29, 2010 the Greenergy Bioethanol Sustainability Programme certification issued by the British company Greenergy International Ltd, a leading biofuel supplier in the United Kingdom. The certification attests that São Martinho’s ethanol is produced in accordance with the highest sustainability practices and maximizes cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to confirming the quality and commitment of the Group’s Sustainability Management, it effectively opens the door to the United Kingdom market for the Group. The company has acquired ethanol made from Brazilian sugarcane since 2005, though it recently had to demonstrate to the British government the sustainable production of its suppliers regarding carbon restrictions and sustainability goals. The United Kingdom created a targetstandard for the sustainability principles called the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO). To comply with the RTFO, Greenenergy has developed a set of criteria encompassing a wide range of social, environmental and community issues that are used to audit all its Brazilian suppliers. The São Martinho Group, through its unit in Pradópolis, successfully underwent the analysis and auditing process from August to December 2009. Obtaining this certification places São Martinho among a select group of 10 Brazilian ethanol producers certified by Greenergy. About Greenergy: Greenergy International Ltd. is the largest independent fuel producer and a leading biofuel supplier in the United Kingdom. In 2010, the company announced the creation of Greenergy Brasil, a joint venture with the French multinational Bauche Energy. The new company will be responsible for exporting Brazilian anhydrous ethanol to the United Kingdom. A total of 350 million liters are expected to be exported in 2010, according to Chairman David Rees. This volume should double in the following years, since Europe uses anhydrous ethanol blended with gasoline at 3.75%, with this percentage potentially reaching 5% and doubling to 10% in the coming years. About São Martinho The São Martinho Group is one of the largest sugar and ethanol groups in Brazil, and operates three mills: São Martinho, in Pradópolis (in the Ribeirão Preto region of São Paulo state); Iracema, in Iracemápolis (in the Limeira region of São Paulo state); and Boa Vista (in Quirinópolis, 300 km from Goiânia, in Goiás state); as well as a unit producing a ribonucleic acid known as Omtek, which is also based in Iracemápolis.
