We cannot say that Marcos Amaro´s work remains oblivious, in a timeless place amid contemporary twists. The artist has in his art, restlessness, expressing his watchful eye to
human relationships in a specific manner through intense traces and construction, seeking to
connect the past- present to the paradoxes of post-modern life.
Would it be possible to rescue the debris of the past and signify them again through art?
If Marcos Amaro reaffirms the motto “away is a place that does not exist”, we may be sure
that his work runs through the border of temporal distance, dialoguing with the contemporary
paradox between postmodern human relationships and the frailty. Obstinate by the redemption
and redefinition of relations and material, one observes specific features from his first
sculptures, which, through the rescue of abandoned materials in old Brazilian landfills, resulted
in three-dimensional results inspired in moments of rupture of the history of recent art. At the
core of three-dimensional compositions, there is the core of detailed observation to different
moments of the artist’s life. The works of this phase refers to a rereading of Duchamp´s works,
Robert Rauschenberg´s ‘object-paintings’, and Tom Sachs.
Now, in his new series, Marcos Amaro portrays through the creations in charcoal on
paper, the distant past marks related to the time around us - but close to the soul every day.
Elements that were once present in the artist’s life are immortalized in unconcerned expressive
features. One of the questions surrounding Marcos Amaro´s production is the intensity.
Intensity of questions and feelings. Desires or passions. Thus, the works of Vestiges of the Soul
are marked by intense traits, feelings and stories.
