The Ministry of Health wants to reduce the trial and initiation. Brazil has several tobacco growing municipalities and hasn't information on the profile of young people who live in these municipalities and that in wide majority of work in the planting of smoke with their parents and relatives. • PARTICIPATED IN SEARCH: 2,079 students of 35 schools in 11 municipalities eligible. • EVER TRIED CIGARETTES: compared with the state capital, Florianópolis that conducted the study in 2004, there was no difference in testing by gender, 30%. Male 28.2% (24.5 – 32.0) Total 24.6% (20.2 –29.0) Female 21.7% (13.2 – 30.1) OBJECTIVES METHODOLOGY • PREVALENCE: In relation to the prevalence (6.1%, CI95% 3.5 - 8.7), it was higher among boys (8.4%, CI95% 4.9 - 11.9) than girls (4.1%, CI95% 2.4 - 5.9). This difference among boys and girls was statistically significant. Survey of school between 7th and 8th grades of elementary school and 1 grade of secondary schools in 11 districts of the Valley Itajaí. Prevalence was estimated using the Stata 8.1. Total 6.1% (3.5 –8.7) Female 4.1% (2.4 – 5.9) Compared with the state capital, Florianópolis, that conducted the study in 2004, the prevalence among female smokers in Itajaí Valley was three times lower. We found a statistically significant difference in the prevalence of smoking by gender. The prevalence of smoking for women was the lowest found when we analyzed data from Global Youth Tobacco Survey to Brazilian cities.
