About the Market
The Berlin International Film Festival, known as Berlinale, has reached its 62nd
year and upholds the tradition of hosting the second largest inernational film market
in the world, the European Film Market.
Since this was the first major event of the year, the EFM managed to bring together
a considerable number of professionals from the film metier, as well as serving as a
thermomenter for the films that will be presented in the coming months.
The market was divided between two locations: The Martin-Gropius-Bau museum
and the Marriott hotel. Both of which are close together and just a few minutes
from the Postsdamer Platz.

The participation of the Program
In 2012, for the seventh consecutive year, the Programa Cinema do Brasil
participated in the event with the support of Apex-Brasil and the Department
for the Promotion of Audiovisual Productions pertaining to Brazilian Ministry
of Foreign Relations, in Berlin, from February 09 to 19, 2012.
The stand was set up at Martin Gropius Bau #122, where the delegation of
34 participating associated memebrs were able to arrange their meetings and
receive professionals from the sector interested in gaining better knowledge
of Brazilian cinema.

Press Conference and Reception
at the Brazilian Embassy
On February 14, a press conference was held to present the Brazilian films
selcted by the Festival. Around 30 journalists from international magazines,
newspapers, radio stations and television channels attended the event and
talked with the representatives of the films that were being presented firsthand to the market.
The conference was organized by the Brazilian Embassy in Germany, who
three days before has held an Official Reception for the members of the
Brazilian delegation from Cinema do Brasil and the professionals connected
to Brazilian cinema living in Berlin, on February 11.

Sales of Brazilian Films
The participation of Brazilian films in the competition, in the parallel festivals and also in
the Market Screening sessions were decisive in the closing of deals, the talks for which
began at the European Film Market and witnessed positive results just weeks after the
end of the event.
“Tabu”, by Miguel Gomes, was purchased by 15 countries, including France, Germany,
Portugal, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada and Austria. The film was co-produced
by O Som e a Fúria (Portugal), Komplizen Film (Germany), Shellac Sud (France) and
the Brazilian company Gullane, an associate meber of Cinema do Brasil. The film will
also be shown at the international festivals of Las Palmas in Grand Canary (Spain) and
Hong Kong.
Gullane also closed deals for distribution of the film “Amazônia – Planeta Verde” to
Russia, China, India, Canada, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Germany and the
United Kingdom.
“Xingu”, by Brazilian director Cao Hamburger, was sold to Israel, Portugal and Canada.
This full-length feature film was produced by O2 Filmes and was also chosen for the
Tribeca Festival (United States).
O2 Filmes has also already sold the film “A Cadeira do Pai” to countries in Asia and
Eastern Europe. This film participated in the Market Screening for the European Film
Market.
Co-Production Market and the
Distribution Support Grant
Along with the screening of films at the market, the Brazilian producers
also took part in the Co-Production Market, an event that brought
together dozens of international producers for the presentation of
projects and business talks. The delegation from Cinema do Brasil
participated in the action as Full Sales and Visitors.
The meeting was also udes to announce the opening of enrolments for
the 4th Distribution Support Grant, which is aimed at international
distributors interested in distributing Brazilian films made by producers
associated with the Program.
In all, ten disributors will be awarded the grant. Each of them will
receive a grant of US$ 25 thousand, of which US$ 15 thousand will
come from Cinema do Brasil and US$ 10 thousand from the Brazilian
Ministry of Foreign Relations, making a total amount of US$ 250
thousand.
Happy Hour at the
Co-Production Market
After the encounter for the producers, a happy hour was also held by
Cinema do Brasil at the Co-Production Market.
All of the participants were invited to the relationship-oriented cocktail
party organized by Cinema do Brasil.

Cinema do Brasil Cocktail Party
On February 11, 2012, a cocktail party was given at the Cinema do
Brasil stand in the aim of promoting encounters between the producers
from the Brazilian delegation and the international professionals
participating in the EFM.
Around 350 people, including distributors, sales agents and producers
from a broad range of nations, were present at the event, also bringing
together the public from other stand and centralizing the attention of the
market.
At 1:30 am, a total of 500 caipirinhas (a typical Brazilian drink) were
served to the guests, thereby representing a record in comparison with
previous cocktail parties held by Cinema do Brasil and the other EFM
events in 2012.

Cinema do Brasil Party
A large party for confraternization was also held, on February 13, 2012.
In fancy dress and to the sound of Carnival “marches”, the event was
attended by more than 650 professionals from the international film
sector, including acclaimed directors such as Miguel Gomes from
Portugal, responsible for the film “Tabu”.
The party was held in the Homebase Lounge, a 400m² space, over the
course of six hours.
