UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO ABC
FOREIGNER STUDENTS QUICK GUIDE
Located in the ABC area, the Universidade Federal do ABC
(UFABC) was created to contribute directly and indirectly to the complete
education of Brazilian people, to advance knowledge in the nature sciences,
engineering, mathematics, computation and human sciences, and to meet
the demands of the productive sector and public administration. Its
undergraduate degree is obtained in two independent phases; in the first part
all students follow one of the interdisciplinary courses: BC&T (Bachelor in
Science and Technology) or BC&H (Bachelor in Sciences and Humanities).
These courses prepare the students for a wide range of activities in,
respectively, sciences/technology and sciences/humanities. Both are
interdisciplinary courses with no department barriers, encouraging the
students to make choices and decide about their own carriers. After finishing
this part, the university offers a second kind of bachelor, licentiate or
engineering degree (known as post-BC&T and post-BC&H).
The pedagogical process favors the exercise of creativity instead
of the passive attitude of knowledge transmission. UFABC also has a mission
to explore new paths in the great adventure of scientific and technological
research, without frontiers, applied to the search for the secrets of nature, to
the invention of new technologies and to the rational criticism to which
intellectual production is subject. The UFABC also considers fundamental to
be open for interactions with society, contributing to the material and
intellectual welfare of the people.

Housing
The minimum monthly amount for renting an one-dormitory apartment in Santo
André is R$700,00 – considering a rental fee of R$600,00 plus condominium
costs of R$100,00. Alternatively, students may live in a “república” (fraternitylike organizations, in houses or apartments), together with other undergraduate
and graduate students. It is possible to find a república with a monthly cost of
about R$300,00, including the basic expenses – water, electricity and internet,
but not food. These repúblicas are, in most cases, near the university, or with
quick access to it.
There is the Associação das Repúblicas (a community for these organizations):

UFABC is located in a neighbourhood called Bangu, and the nearby
neighborhoods are Santa Terezinha, Parque das Nações, Parque Oratório, Vila
Curuçá, Parque Jaçatuba, Campestre and Jardim, so it is recommended to search
for places nearby.
Food
The value of the food basket (“cesta básica”, minimum amount of food for an
average adult during a month) is between R$360,00 and R$380,00. With this, it
is expected to be unnecessary for the student to eat in other places. However,
there is the option of having lunch at SESI (near UFABC) from Monday to Friday
for R$5,00 a meal. The average price of a simple meal (rice, beans, meat/chicken
and salad) in other places is R$15,00.
Transport
The two most used means of transportation are the municipal bus and the train,
both of them having a fare of R$2,90. Students may request the “student ticket”,
which allows them to pay half the standard fare if they use any means of
transportation in order to get to the university.
Health
It is highly recommended to hire a national or international health plan. The cost
varies according to age, preexistent diseases and economic dependants, if there
are any. Anyway, a basic health plan for an adult at the age of 20 is at least
R$100,00.
