TEMA DO TRABALHO: LASER THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF ORAL
MUCOSITIS IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION:
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
RESUMO:
LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY (LLLT) HAS BEEN WIDESPREAD IN THE CLINICAL
ENVIRONMENT BY OFFERING VARIOUS FORMS OF USE ACCORDING TO THE
ILLNESS SUFFERED BY EACH PATIENT. IN VIEW OF THE HIGH PREVALENCE
OF ORAL MUCOSITIS (OM) IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING TRANSPLANTATION OF
HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELLS, LLLT EMERGES AS AN EFFECTIVE TREATMENT
OPTION FOR THIS DISEASE BECAUSE OF ITS PHOTOBIOMODULATORS
EFFECTS WHICH ACCELERATE THE HEALING PROCESS. THIS STUDY AIMED
TO DEMONSTRATE HOW LLLT WORKS IN THE TREATMENT OF OM IN PATIENTS
WHO HAD BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTS, EXPLAINING ITS MECHANISMS IN A
CELLULAR LEVEL AND HOW THIS ACTION IS MANIFESTED CLINICALLY. WE
ALSO STUDIED WHAT TYPES OF LASER AND WHICH PARAMETERS WERE
MORE EFFECTIVE IN THE TREATMENT OF OM. A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW WAS
PERFORMED ON PUBMED AND LILACS USING DESCRIPTORS SELECTED IN
ACCORDANCE
WITH
THE
DESCRIPTORS
IN
HEALTH
SCIENCES
(HTTP://DECS.BVS.BR/). IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TREATMENT OF CHOICE
WAS THE HE-NE LASER (632,8NM, 60MW, 2J/CM²) BEING APPLIED DAILY
BEFORE EACH RADIATION SESSION DURING 7 WEEKS, REVEALING AN
EFFECTIVE AND ATRAUMATIC TECHNIQUE IN THE TREATMENT OF OM. THE
RESULTS DEMONSTRATE THE CLINICAL IMPORTANCE OF LLLT DUE TO ITS
EFFECTIVENESS IN PROVIDING ACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS OF ORAL HEALTH
TO PATIENTS.

TEMA DO TRABALHO: THE APPROACH OF ORAL LESIONS OF STEVENSJOHNSON SYNDROME WITH LASER THERAPY: A CASE REPORT
RESUMO:
THE STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME (SJS) IS AN IMMUNE HYPERSENSITIVITY
REACTION INVOLVING SKIN AND MUCOUS MEMBRANES, CONSIDERED RARE
AND POTENTIALLY FATAL. DRUG HYPERSENSITIVITY IS THE MAIN CAUSE,
MANIFESTED AS RASH, PROGRESSING TO EXTENSIVE EPIDERMAL
DISPLACEMENT, AND INVOLVES, IN MOST CASES, ORAL, OCULAR, AND
GENITAL MUCOSA. ORAL LESIONS ARE PAINFUL, LEADING TO HYPOREXIA. IN
THIS CONTEXT, LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY (LLLT) MAY HAVE AN IMPORTANT
ANTIALGIC ROLE, MODULATING INFLAMMATION AND CICATRIZATION OF
THOSE LESIONS. FEMALE, 17Y.O, ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL SANTA CASA
DE MONTES CLAROS (MG), WITH GENERALIZED RASH, ORAL ULCERS, FEVER
AND ODYNOPHAGIA. HER MEDICAL HISTORY REVEALED EPILEPSY AND THE
USE OF LAMOTRIGINE 25 MG/DAY FOR 2 WEEKS. THE CLINICAL
CHARACTERISTICS AND HISTORY LED TO THE DIAGNOSIS OF SJS, TREATED
WITH HYDRATION, CORTICOSTEROIDS, ANALGESICS AND ANTIBIOTICS.
AFTER 4 DAYS, SHE REDUCED FOOD INTAKE DUE TO THE PAIN CAUSED BY
ULCERS IN LIPS, CHEEK, TONGUE, PALATE AND ORAL FLOOR, BEING
INITIATED LLLT (THERAPY XT, SPOT SIZE: 0.028CM², 650NM, 100MW,
14,28J/CM², 04 SECONDS AND 0.4J/POINT, CONTINUOUS IN CONTACT OF
24/24H). IN THE 5TH SESSION OF LLLT, THE LESIONS WERE HEALED. IT WAS
FOUND THAT THE LLLT REDUCED PAIN AND ACCELERATED CICATRIZATION
PROCESS, MAKING IT AN IMPORTANT MEASURE TO THE SUPPORT OF SJS
PATIENTS.

TEMA DO TRABALHO: EFFECT OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY ON DENTAL
PLAQUE BACTERIA: AN STUDY IN VITRO
RESUMO:
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY HAS BEEN SUPPORTED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO
ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS TO SUPPRESS SUBGINGIVAL SPECIES RELATED
WITH PERIODONTAL DISEASE. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS INVESTIGATE
THE EFFECTS OF PDT ON DENTAL PLAQUE BACTERIA IN VITRO USING
METHYLENE BLUE (MB) AND CURCUMIN. SAMPLES OF DENTAL PLAQUE WERE
TAKEN FROM 10 SUBJECTS AND PLACED INTO ONE VIAL CONTAINING 4.5ML
OF PREREDUCED, ANAEROBICALLY STERILIZED RINGERS SOLUTION. THE
MICROORGANISMS FROM THE PLAQUE SAMPLES WERE DISPERSED BY
REPEATED PASSAGE THROUGH PASTEUR PIPETTES. ALIQUOTS WERE
TRANSFERRED TO 1-ML CUVETTES AND THE OPTICAL DENSITY OF THE
BACTERIAL SUSPENSIONS WAS MEASURED IN A SPECTROPHOTOMETER AT
600NM. EACH SAMPLE FROM THE SUBJECTS WAS DIVIDED INTO 2 PARTS: (1)
IN SUSPENSION, WAS EXPOSED TO PDT; (2) WAS USED FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF BIOFILMS, WHICH WERE EXPOSED TO PDT ONE WEEK
LATER. IN SUSPENSION AND BIOFILM WE COMPARED THE PHOTODYNAMIC
EFFECTS OF MB AND CURCUMIN. THE ENERGY FLUENCIES USED WERE
30J/CM2. FOLLOWING THE TREATMENT, SURVIVAL FRACTIONS WERE
CALCULATED BY COUNTING THE NUMBER OF COLONY-FORMING UNITS.
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY REDUCED PERIODONTAL SPECIES ESPECIALLY ON
PLANKTONIC PHASE. IN BIOFILM THE BEST REDUCTIONS WERE
APPROXIMATELY 50%, SO NOVEL DRUGS OR DELIVERY SYSTEMS MAY NEED
TO BE DEVELOPED TO DISTURB THE COMPLEXITY OF DENTAL BIOFILMS.

MODEL OF ORAL CARCINOGENESIS
RESUMO:
THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF LOW-POWER
LASER THERAPY(LPLT) ON THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF A MODEL OF ORAL
CARCINOGENESIS INDUCED BY 4NQO IN RATS. THE RODENTS WERE
RANDOMLY DIVIDED INTO 8 GROUPS (G0 TO G7) OF 6 ANIMALS EACH,
COMPRISING 4 CONTROL GROUPS (G0, G2, G4 AND G6) AND 4 TEST GROUPS
(G1, G3, G5 AND G7).THE ANIMALS IN THE CONTROL GROUPS RECEIVED A
TOPICAL APPLICATION OF 4NQO ON THE TONGUE THE ANIMALS IN THE TEST
GROUPS WERE IRRADIATED (λ 660 NM, 100 MW, AREA: 0.03 CM2, 70
J/CM2, 20 SEC, 2J) THREE TIMES A WEEK FOR 4 WEEKS . A LASER LIGHT WAS
APPLIED TO THE ANIMALS IN GROUP G1 FOR 12 WEEKS, WHEREAS THE
LASER WAS APPLIED IN GROUP G3 CONCURRENTLY WITH THE 4NQO
APPLICATION. AFTER EUTHANASIA, THE TISSUE SAMPLES WERE ANALYZED
MORPHOLOGICALLY AND HISTOPATHOLOGICALLY. LPLT
WAS ABLE TO
INHIBIT THE PROGRESSION OF CARCINOGENESIS IN THE RATS THAT
DEVELOPED EPITHELIAL DYSPLASIA (P = 0.032). IN RATS DIAGNOSED WITH
MICROINVASIVE CARCINOMAS, LASER LIGHT PREVENTED THE DEVELOPMENT
OF TUMORS (P = 0.015). FURTHER STUDIES ARE WARRANTED USING
STANDARDIZED PROTOCOLS THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF THIS LPLT
TECHNIQUE TOGETHER WITH THE CLINICAL AND HISTOLOGICAL EVALUATION
OF LESIONS.

RESUMO:
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT) HAS BEEN USED FOR BACTERIAL
INACTIVATION IN DENTISTRY WITH SELECTIVE ACTION TARGETING ONLY
AREAS WITH PHOTOSENSITIZER ACCUMULATION. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY
WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL PDT WITH BLUE
LIGHT AND CURCUMIN ON THE ORAL CAVITY. EIGHTEEN ADULTS WERE
RANDOMLY DIVIDED INTO 2 GROUPS: (I) PDT GROUP - TREATED WITH
CURCUMIN AND BLUE LIGHT; (II) LIGHT GROUP - TREATED ONLY WITH THE
BLUE LIGHT. THE NATURAL CURCUMIN (CURCUMIN 53.4% AND CURCUMINOID
46.16%) WITH CONCENTRATION OF 30 MG/L WAS USED. THE IRRADIATION
PARAMETERS WERE: BLUE LED (450 NM), 400 MW, 600 MW/CM2 AND 200
J/CM2. THE SALIVA SAMPLES WERE COLLECTED FOR BACTERIAL COUNTS AT
BASELINE AND AFTER THE EXPERIMENTAL PHASE. SERIAL DILUTIONS WERE
PERFORMED, AND THE RESULTING SAMPLES WERE CULTURED ON BHI AGAR
PLATES WITH SHEEP BLOOD. THE NUMBER OF COLONY FORMING UNITS
(CFU) WAS DETERMINED. THE PDT GROUP SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT
REDUCTION OF CFU (1.26E+00±1.30E+00, P˂0.05). THE PDT USING
CURCUMIN AND BLUE LED REDUCED SALIVARY MICROORGANISMS, LEADING
TO OVERALL DISINFECTION OF THE MOUTH, FOR EXAMPLE, MUCOSA,
TONGUE, AND SALIVA.

IN
RESUMO:
OSTEOPOROTIC AND FRACTURES ARE MAJOR CAUSES OF DYSFUNCTION,
MORTALITY AND IMPAIRED LIFE QUALITY IN THE AGEING POPULATION. THE
OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF THE
INFRARED-LED (850NM) ASSOCIATED WITH TREADMILL TRAINING ON BONE
MASS DURING AGING. NINETEEN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN (50-60 YEARS
OLD) PARTICIPATED IN THIS STUDY DURING A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR. THEY
WERE SEPARATED IN 2 GROUPS: THE CONTROL GROUP, CARRIED OUT WITH
ONLY TREADMILL TRAINING AND; LED GROUP, WITH PHOTOTHERAPY DURING
TREADMILL TRAINING. THE TRAINING CONSISTED OF WALKING TWICE A WEEK
FOR 45 MIN AT INTENSITIES BETWEEN 85-90% MAXIMAL HEART RATE. THE
IRRADIATION PARAMETERS WERE 100MW, TREATMENT TIME OF 45 MIN AND
108 J/CM2. THE TREATMENT WAS EVALUATED THROUGH DUAL-ENERGY XRAY ABSORPTIOMETRY (DEXA) SCANS [FEMUR BONE MINERAL DENSITY
(BMD)]. THE FEMUR BMD SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED FOR THE CONTROL
GROUP [FROM 0.979±0.130 TO 0.954±0.127 G/CM2 (P˂0.05)], BUT NOT FOR
THE LED GROUP. THESE FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT LEDTHERAPY (INFRARED
RADIATION) MAY BE A BENEFIT IN ENHANCING OF THE BONE STRENGTH AND
CONTRIBUTES TO PREVENTION OF FALLS AND FRACTURES DURING AGING.

SPECTROSCOPY
DURING
RESUMO:
MENOPAUSE OR PREGNANCY MAY LEAD TO ORAL DISEASE, CHANGES IN
CALCIUM METABOLISM, DEMINERALIZATION AND LOSS OF TOOTH WHICH
COULD BE REGISTERED BY SEVERAL OPTICAL METHODS. FLUORESCENCE
SPECTROSCOPY IS AN OPTICAL TECHNIQUE THAT HAS BEEN USED, FOR
EXAMPLE, IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY AND FOR DETECTION OF DENTAL
CARIES. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE TEETH
DEMINERALIZATION BY FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY. A STUDY IN VITRO
WAS PERFORMED WITH TEETH OF RATS AND HUMAN. THE TEETH WERE
DECALCIFIED WITH 4% EDTA (41,3G) AND NAOH (4.4 G) SOLUTION. THE PH
WAS MAINTAINED BETWEEN 7.2 AND 7.4. THE TEETH WERE WASHED WITH
WATER AND THE SOLUTION WAS CHANGED TWICE A WEEK DURING TWO
MONTHS. FLUORESCENCE SPECTRA WAS OBTAINED WITH EXCITATION AT
532NM (GREEN) AND 408NM (VIOLET) (MEASURED IN ARBITRARY UNITS [A.U.])
AND EMISSION AT 490 NM (PEAK INTENSITY). THE FLUORESCENCE INTENSITY
WAS INCREASED AFTER RATS' TOOTH DECALCIFICATION FOR BOTH 532NM
(∆=1247±905 A.U.) AND 408 NM (∆=1219±1111 A.U). HOWEVER, THE
FLUORESCENCE INTENSITY OF THE HUMAN' TOOTH WAS REDUCED FOR
532NM
(∆=-202±634
A.U.)

INCREASED
FOR
408NM
(∆=2162±486 A.U.). DIFFERENCES IN PEAK INTENSITIES INDICATED
CHANGES IN CALCIUM CONCENTRATION WITH HIGHER ORGANIC CONTENT
(PROTEIN).

A DELAYED UNION IN THE FRACTURE. TWENTY FOUR RATS WERE DIVIDED
INTO FOUR EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS: CONTROL GROUP – UNTREATED; LIPUS
GROUP – TREATED WITH LIPUS (1,5MHZ, 1:4 DUTY CICLE, 30MW/CM², 20
MINUTES); LASER GROUP – TREATED WITH INFRARED LLLT (808NM, 100MW,
2500MW/CM², 125J/CM², 50 SECONDS); LIPUS+LASER GROUP – TREATED WITH
LIPUS PLUS LLLT. THE TREATMENTS WITH INFRARED LLLT AND LIPUS
STARTED 5 WEEKS AFTER THE SURGERY FOLLOWING A SEQUENCE OF 5
DAYS ON AND 2 DAYS OFF UNTIL 12 SESSIONS WERE REACHED. THE X-RAY
MICROTOMOGRAPHY (µCT) WAS PERFORMED. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TREATMENTS RESULT FOR THE PARAMETER
CONNECTIVITY DENSITY (CONN.D - MM-3) IN THE LIPUS+LASER GROUP THAN
CONTROL GROUP (289±111 VS 193±79, P˂0.05). THEN, THE LIPUS PLUS

RESUMO:
ORAL MUCOSITIS (OM) IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON COMPLICATIONS
DURING CHEMOTHERAPY, SINCE CHEMOTHERAPY AGENTS HAVE INJURING
ACTIVITY ON THE CELLS OF THE BASAL LAYER THAT LEADS TO ATROPHY AND
ULCERATION OF THE ORAL SOFT TISSUES BY NO REPLACEMENT OF THE
EPITHELIAL AND CONNECTIVE CELLS. DUE TO ITS PHOTOBIOSTIMULATORS
EFFECTS, LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY (LLLT) IS INDICATED FOR THE
TREATMENT OF OM BECAUSE IT INCREASES THE PRODUCTION OF
ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE, GENERATING MORE ENERGY FOR CELLULAR

TEMA DO TRABALHO: PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
CURCUMIN IN BIOFILMS AND CARIOUS DENTINE

WITH
RESUMO:
THE PRESENT STUDY EVALUATED THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF STREPTOCOCCUS
MUTANS AND LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS TO PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
(PDT) GROWN AS MULTI-SPECIES IN THE BIOFILM PHASE VERSUS IN DENTINE
CARIOUS LESIONS. A SUPPLEMENTED CULTURE MEDIUM WAS USED TO
DEVELOP MULTI-SPECIES BIOFILMS AND TO INDUCE CARIES ON HUMAN
DENTINE SLABS. FIVE DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF CURCUMIN (0.75, 1.5,
3.0, 4.0, AND 5.0 G/L) WERE USED ASSOCIATED WITH 5.7 J/CM2 LIGHT
EMISSION
DIODE.
FOUR
DIFFERENT
GROUPS
WERE
ANALYZED
L−D− (CONTROL GROUP), L−D+ (DRUG GROUP), L+D−
(LIGHT GROUP), AND L+D+ (PDT GROUP). ANOVA/TUKEY’S TESTS WERE
CONDUCTED TO COMPARE GROUPS. A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION (P <0.05) IN
CELL VIABILITY WAS OBSERVED IN THE BIOFILM PHASE FOLLOWING
PHOTOSENSITIZATION WITH ALL CURCUMIN CONCENTRATIONS TESTED. TO
ACHIEVE SIGNIFICANT BACTERIAL REDUCTION (P <0.05) IN CARIOUS DENTINE,
IT WAS NECESSARY TO UTILIZE 5.0 G/L OF CURCUMIN IN ASSOCIATION WITH
BLUE LIGHT. NO SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION WAS FOUND FOR L−D+,
SUPPORTING THE ABSENCE OF THE DRUG’S DARK TOXICITY. S. MUTANS AND
L. ACIDOPHILUS WERE SUSCEPTIBLE TO CURCUMIN IN THE PRESENCE OF
BLUE LIGHT. HOWEVER, THESE MICROORGANISMS WITHIN DENTINE CARIOUS
LESIONS WERE LESS AFFECTED THAN THEY WERE IN THE BIOFILM PHASE.

TEMA DO TRABALHO: LASER TREATMENT APPLIED TO HEALING PROCESS OF
ORAL ULCERS IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS.
RESUMO:
A BIBLIOGRAPHIC REVIEW HIGHLIGHTED ARTICLES WITH THE MOST
MEANINGFUL FEATURES CONCERNING THE APPLICABILITY OF LASER
TREATMENT IN HEALING PROCESS OF ULCERS IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES.
PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS SHOWED A GREATER PROBABILITY OF
DEVELOPING ULCERS IN ORAL MUCOSA. MOREOVER, SUCH PATIENTS MAY
HAVE ANGIOPATHY, WHICH DECREASES BLOOD SUPPLY, REDUCING THE
INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE AND THE TISSUE HEALING. THIS CASE MUST BE
UNDERSTOOD
BY
EVALUATING
THE
ANAMNESIS
OF
PATIENTS.
ADDITIONALLY, THE DENTIST IN CHARGE MUST PROPOSE THE BETTER
INDICATED TREATMENT FOR SUCH ORAL LESIONS. IT IS REPORTED IN
BIBLIOGRAPHY THE LASER ABILITY TO INCREASE THE RATE OF GROWTH OF
KERATINOCYTES, METABOLIC PROCESSES, AND COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS,
THUS ENHANCING THE HEALING PROCESS, WHICH IS A MAJOR CONCERN
FOR PATIENTS WITH DIABETES. ALSO, LASER TREATMENT PROMOTES A
SMOOTH ANALGESIC EFFECT, AND AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECT. LASERS
WITH LOW INTENSITY ARE NOT BASED ON MECHANISMS OF HEAT TRANSFER,
BUT DUE TO PHOTOPHYSICAL, PHOTOCHEMICAL, AND PHOTOBIOLOGICAL
EFFECTS IN CELLS. LASER TREATMENT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR
PREGNANT WOMEN, PATIENTS WITH EPILEPSY AND HEMOPHILIA. A HEALING
TREATMENT, E.G. LASER-BASED TREATMENT, IS A PALLIATION, AND MUST BE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE PATTERN INSULIN-BASED TREATMENT FOR PATIENTS
WITH DIABETES MELLITUS.

TEMA DO TRABALHO: EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PROTOCOL DOSES OF LASER
(GA-AL-AS, 904 NM) ON THE MANDIBULAR CONDYLE OF RABBITS: ANALYSIS
BY CBCT
RESUMO:
METHODS: SIXTEEN RABBITS RANDOMLY DIVIDED INTO FOUR EXPERIMENTAL
GROUPS (EG) OF 4 ANIMALS WERE USED IN THIS STUDY. WE CARRIED OUT A
CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CBCT) EXAMINATION OF BOTH ATMS
OF ALL ANIMALS WICH WERE USED AS CONTROL. SUBSEQUENTLY, WE
RADIATE EACH ATM WITH LOW LEVEL LASER (LLL) (GA-AL-AS 904NM), 100MW,
SPOT 0.2CM2, TWO POINTS, 3 TIMES/WEEK, TOTALING 10 TIMES, WITH DOSES
OF 15 J/CM2 (EG-I), 45 J/CM2 (EG-II), 60 J/CM2 (EG-III), AND 90J/CM2 (EG-IV).
AFTER 20 DAYS OF THE LAST IRRADIATION WE PERFORMED A NEW CBCT
EXAM AND THEN THE MEASUREMENT OF THE CONDYLES ON THE CORONAL
AND SAGITTAL PLANES WAS OBTAINED. IN THE ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS
ANOVA WAS USED. RESULTS:THE AVERAGE VALUES FOUND FOR THE EG
WERE HIGHER THAN THOSE FOUND FOR CG FOR BOTH THE CORONAL AND
SAGITTAL PLANES. THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE
FOR GROUP I (P=0.04) AND BETWEEN THE GROUPS I AND II (P<0.1).
CONCLUSIONS: THE AVERAGE VALUES FOUND IN THE MEASUREMENTS OF
THE CONDYLES SUBMITTED TO DOSES OF LLL USED IN THIS STUDY WERE
HIGHER THAN THOSE FOUND FOR THE CONTROL GROUP IN BOTH THE
CORONAL AND SAGITTAL PLANES.THE CBCT PROVED TO BE AN EFFECTIVE
METHOD FOR ANALYSIS OF CONDYLAR DIMENSIONS.

TEMA DO TRABALHO: USE OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY FOR ORAL CAVITY
DISINFECTION.
RESUMO:
THIS STUDY EVALUATED THE EFFECTS OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)
ON BACTERIA DERIVED FROM HUMAN SALIVA AFTER PHOTOSENSITIZATION
WITH CURCUMIN AND EXPOSURE TO BLUE LED LIGHT (440-460NM). A
RANDOMIZED STUDY WAS PERFORMED IN 13 ADULTS. THREE GROUPS WERE
ANALYZED: L-D- (CONTROL GROUP; NO LIGHT, NO DRUG), L-D + (TREATED
ONLY WITH DRUGS) AND L+ D+ (TREATED WITH LIGHT AND DRUG).
UNSTIMULATED SALIVA SAMPLES WERE COLLECTED FOR BACTERIAL
COUNTING AT THE INITIAL AND AFTER THE EXPERIMENTAL PHASE. THE
KOLMOGOROV-SMIRNOV AND T-STUDENT TESTS WERE USED FOR
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. IN L-D+ GROUP, THE BACTERIAL REDUCTION WAS
OBSERVED ONLY 9% (P> 0.05). ONLY IN THE PDT GROUP (L+D+)
STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DECREASE WAS REGISTERED (P <0.05) IN THE
POPULATION OF BACTERIA (68%). IT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED THAT PDT IS
AN EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE IN REDUCING SALIVARY MICROORGANISMS. THIS
STUDY SHOWS THAT ORAL DISINFECTION MAY BE ACCOMPLISHED BY
PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY AND THAT THIS THERAPY IS A PROMISING
ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUE FOR REDUCING THE RISK OF POSTOPERATIVE
INFECTIONS THROUGH A REDUCTION OF THE AMOUNT OF ORAL BACTERIA.
