B. Risi Jr. – interview] RIPSA was established 10 years ago as an inter-institutional cooperation initiative to support the use of information in the national health system management. This was justified due to the fragmentation of the existing information systems and to insufficiency of regular processes to perform general analysis of health situation and its trends. The first step was to assembly a set of basic indicators suitable to this type of analysis, with a clear definition of its concepts and meanings, data sources and calculation methods, as well as its uses and limitations, and also available and recommended analysis categories. Through a collaborative work process involving the primary institutions involved, this set of basic indicators and data is annually reviewed, updated and made available in an easily-accessed database on the Internet. DeCS/MeSH for indexing literature • DeCS – the Portuguese acronym for Descritores em Ciências da Saúde, ie, Health Sciences Descriptors – – – – – – – – update frequency idem MeSH currently available in Portuguese, Spanish and English provides for Public Health, Homeopathy, and Science and Health terminology allows meta searching, ie, multiple IS can be searched by a single search strategy allows multilingual searching to literature Controlled multilingual vocabulary created by BIREME in 1982, fully compatible with MeSH serves as a controlled (unique, standard) vocabulary for indexing scientific and technical healthrelated literature permits searching by subject (concepts), independently of the language • natural language used in document titles, abstracts and full texts is ambiguous and therefore leads to long/complex search expressions, lack of specificity and unreliable results – DeCS/MeSH hierarchical codes allow for exploding (searching) all terms of a conceptual hierarchy (branch of the hierarchical tree) Information Science clusters A distribuição do conhecimento científico público em informação, comunicação e informática em saúde indexado nas bases de dados MEDLINE e LILACS. Ciência e Saúde Coletiva, 2007. Abel L. Packer, Adalberto O. Tardelli, Regina C. Figueiredo Castro. • presents the distribution of the international regional and national scientific output in the area of health information and communication, indexed in MEDLINE and LILACS databases between 1996 and 2005. • the selection of articles of this knowledge area was based on the hierarchical structure of the vocabulary used in these databases for Information Science. • four specific domains were determined: health information, medical informatics, health scientific communication and health communication: 1.
