Lagoa do Fogo (“Fire Lake”). Formed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century,
today it is a majestically beautiful lake. Return via Lagoa. Spend the rest of the
day strolling through Ponta Delgada, the tourist heart of São Miguel. (B)

Day at leisure. We suggest taking optional tours tovisit other areas of the
island with picturesque villages, rugged landscape, and beautiful scenery, all

A full day tour of the island, stopping at a belvedere “miradouro” with a beautiful
view of Horta. Continue up into the hills to the north end and visit “Capelinhos”,
the haunting site of the 1957/58 volcanic eruption. Return to Horta via Varadouro,

Board the ferry to Madalena, on Pico Island. Visit an impressive array of marine
caves along the way to the village of St. Roque. Cross through the interior of
the island to visit Lajes (lunch) and visit the old whale-hunting facilities. Return
toMadalena along the southern part of the island and return by ferry to Horta.

houses, many with tall cylindrical chimneys, reminiscent of architectural styles of
early settlers from southern Portugal. The island has some of the oldest buildings
