Sonae Sierra Brasil held on April 28th and 29th the Personae Tenant Awards
ceremony. In this third edition, the awards recognized the best practices of
prevention in terms of Safety and Health adopted in the stores of the 10 shopping
centres in operation in the country in 2009.
In this edition, Renner Department Store, located in Shopping Metrópole, São
Bernardo do Campo, was the winner in the category A, for stores larger than
1,000 m2 and with more than 10 outlets. Lustres Yamamura, located in Parque D.
Pedro Shopping, Campinas, was awarded in the category B, for stores smaller
than 1,000m2 and with less than 10 outlets.
The participating stores were checked in order to make sure they were in
compliance with the items previously defined by the rules and regulations of the
awards. During the visits, safety items (fire extinguishers, hoses, smoke detection
systems, etc.) were assessed.
With this award, Sonae Sierra Brasil seeks to encourage tenants to adopt the
necessary measures for the prevention and anticipation of accidents and make
their stores safer, aiming at a “zero accident” target.
“The award reflects the greater commitment shown by tenants in the Safety and
Health sector and the growing importance they give to the measures promoted by
Sonae Sierra in this area”, points out Elsa Monteiro, Director of Sustainability of
Sonae Sierra.
Sonae Sierra’s Safety & Health System
Personae Tenant Awards originated from the PERSONÆ Project, a novel program
in the industry developed by Sonae Sierra in its 52 shopping centres located in
seven countries: Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Romania and Brazil.
The PERSONÆ Project was developed in 3 phases over a four-year period – from
2004 to 2008 – when the culture of prevention and anticipation of accidents
became consolidated and it involved over 70 thousand people, including
employees, suppliers and tenants of Sonae Sierra.
As a result of the effort in the development of this Safety & Health management
system, Sonae Sierra became, in 2008, the first company in this industry to
obtain the certification of its Safety and Health Management System, according to
the OHSAS 18001 requirements (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment
Series). Three shopping centres in Brazil - Parque D. Pedro, in Campinas (SP),
Shopping Penha and Plaza Sul, both located in the capital city of São Paulo – also
had their systems certified.
In 2009, there was a reduction of 28% in the number of accidents that required
medical care in the shopping centres, compared to the previous year. This was
due to the work of employees, suppliers, tenants and customers. Also, there was
a reduction of 25% in the number of days off sick or due to accidents in the
workplace in the same period.
In addition to encouraging tenants, employees and suppliers, Sonae Sierra also
disseminates the Safety and Health concept to visitors to the shopping centres,
providing them with tips on the safe usage of escalators, elevators, how to park
safely, the importance of vaccination, as well as emergency evacuation
simulations.
