BRAZILIAN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE MINISTÉRIO DA AERONÁUTICA EFFECTIVE DATE: DEPARTAMENTO DE AVIAÇÃO CIVIL AD Nr.: 16 March 98 97-10-08R1 The following Airworthiness Directive (AD), issued by the Departamento de Aviação Civil (DAC) in accordance with provisions of Chapter IV, Title III of Código Brasileiro de Aeronáutica - Law NR 7,565 dated 19 December 1986 - and Regulamento Brasileiro de Homologação Aeronáutica (RBHA) 39, applies to all aircraft registered in the Registro Aeronáutico Brasileiro. No person may operate an aircraft to which this AD applies, unless it has previously complied with the requirements established herein. AD Nr. 97-10-08R1 – ALLISON – Amendment 39-832. APPLICABILITY: This Airworthiness Directive is applicable to all Allison engine models AE 3007A installed in the Embraer EMB-145 aircraft. CANCELLATION / REVISION: This AD supersedes EAD Nr. 97-10-08 – Amdt 39-814, dated 23 Oct.1997, and is being issued to impose the accomplishment of a functional test of the compressor variable geometry vanes system and the determination of the useful life of the respective torque tube. REASON: It has been found the possibility of occurrence of too much friction in the compressor variable-vane torque tube system, which can cause a stress crack to develop in the actuator arm of the titanium torque tube, which results in the partial fail, with loss of engine thrust and eventually engine flame-out. Since this condition may occur in other engines of the same type and affect flight safety of the aircraft on which they are installed, an immediate corrective action is required. Thus, sufficient reason exists to request compliance with this AD in the indicated time limit. REQUIRED ACTION: Testing of the variable-vane torque tube system and determination of the useful life of the respective torque tube. COMPLIANCE: Required as indicated below, unless already accomplished, in function of the compliance time established in the Allison Service Bulletin referred below. Within the next 100 flight operating hours after the effective date of this amendment, test the variable-vane torque tube system to determine the force required for operation of the system and, as a result of that, the limit life of the torque tube at which it shall be replaced. Compliance with the original version of this AD does not eliminate the need to further comply with this revision 1. The detailed instructions and procedures to accomplish this AD are described in the Allison Service Bulletin Nr. AE 3007A-A-75-005, or further revisions approved by the FAA and endorsed by the CTA.
