Research and scholarly activities Current research Polymeric materials find many applications in the dental and biomedical fields. Our research efforts are focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of materials intended as permanent dental restoratives or biodegradable polymers with the potential to be applied in periodontal regenerative protocols. Analytical techniques coupling polymer conversion and property evolution help advance the understanding of such materials, and that has been accomplished with customized optical mounts. Polymerization induced phase-separation and self-assembly are being used as platforms to create nano-heterogeneous materials, with increased conversion and reduced stress. Tailorable polymer particles, incorporating a wide array of functionalities, are being synthesized and successfully used to reduce shrinkage and stress in dimethacrylate networks. Current research interests 1. Polymeric dental and biomedical materials a) Low shrink / low stress dental composites b) Biodegradable periodontal materials (membranes/bone graft materials) 2. Development of new tools to evaluate property evolution in dental materials a) Conversion-dependent polymer property evolution b) High throughput combinatorial analysis Research Support Principal Investigator: Pfeifer Title: Methacrylate-modified Riboflavin as a collagen crosslinking agent for biomedical applications Funding: Medical Research Foundation of Oregon (OHSU) Annual direct costs: $40,000 Period: June 1, 2012 – May 31, 2013 Co-Principal Investigators: Bowman, Stansbury, Cramer, Pfeifer Title: Improved Understanding of Polymer Property Evolution: Dynamic Measurement and Modeling Funding: I/UCRC Fundamentals and Applications of Photopolymerization Annual direct costs: $ 40,000 Period: January 1, 2011 – December 31, 2014 Publications Book Chapters 1.
