CALL FOR PAPERS XI SEMINAR ON THE HISTORY OF THE CITY AND OF URBANISM THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY AND OF URBANISM: DO IDEAS HAVE A PLACE? Vitória, Espírito Santo, October 5 to 8, 2010 It is an immense joy for the Organizing Committee, the Post-Graduation Program in Architecture and Urbanism (PPGAU/UFES) and the Post-Graduation Program in Geography of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (PPGG/UFES), the PostGraduation Program in History of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (PPGH/UFJF) and the Post-Graduation Program in Social Policies of the State University of Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (PPGPS/UENF) to invite researchers engaged with the study of the history of the city and of urbanism, from various disciplinary fields, to participate in the XI SEMINAR ON THE HISTORY OF THE CITY AND OF URBANISM (XI SHCU) that will take place in the city of Vitória, from October 5 to 8, 2010. The XI Seminar on the History of the City and of Urbanism is part of the scientific programme of the National Association of Post-Graduation and Research in Urban and Regional Planning (ANPUR) and of the National Association of Research and Post-Graduation in Architecture and Urbanism (ANPARQ), having taken place every two years since the 1990s. MAIN THEME: THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY AND OF URBANISM: DO IDEAS HAVE A PLACE? Having greatly accomplished for 20 years, since 1990, the Seminar on the History of the City and of Urbanism has gathered, in its previous ten meetings, around a thousand papers in diverse modes of presentation. This amount does not only represent a growth in the exchange of experience among researchers, but also demonstrates enrichment and evolution in the studies related to this theme, and its broader disciplinary and territorial scope. Historians, architects, sociologists, anthropologists, geographers, among other researchers in the fields of arts, social and human sciences, have promoted reflections that deal with multiple dimensions of the city. The exchange of experiences that the SHCU has made possible extrapolates the national territorial boundaries, extending from the Americas to other continents. This interchange has enabled basilar understandings on the construction of the city and on the constitution of urbanism in Brazil to take place, as well as to debate trends and repercussions that have taken place along history. The circulation of ideas and practices, a theme that is present in the scope of the interests of SHCU, expressively returns in Recife, during the debates in the X Seminar. In that event, Leme indicates the importance of such a debate in the reflection concerning “[…] the formation of the Brazilian society developed by the field of architecture and urbanism” nowadays. She highlights the fact that, in the past 20 years, the discussions go around the notions of “influence”, “transference and translation” and “resonance”, looking for answers for the “[…] complexity that shapes the circulation of ideas” in the process of the construction of cities. Enraptured by such questionings, the organizers of the XI SHCU propose to broaden the understanding of the issues that this theme involves in the present agendas and also to stimulate further research fronts. Thus, the XI Seminar on the History of the City and of Urbanism has as its main theme the discussion of the circulation and spread of ideas in the process of the construction of cities and the process of defining urbanism as a discipline and a professional practice. After all, do ideas about the city have a place? Generations of urbanists and planners have 2 dedicated themselves to the search of solutions to the cities. Their proposals, in one way or another, refer to urbanistic theories and practices. The mechanisms that have made possible the circulation of ideas and their spread in the academic and professional milieus are uncountable. Be it as transpositions or as model transferences, be it as repetitions or as reinterpretations in particular contexts, these ideas have had the power to alter the configuration of our cities. Thus, we reiterate the need of reflecting about the ideas concerning the process of defining urbanism as a discipline and a professional practice, corroborating to those who have thought about the city. Understanding the context to which their proposals belong is a fundamental key to the improvement of future approaches. Global proposals, joint plannings, partial projects, urbanistic directives, thoughts that have remained on paper or practices that have proved to be incomplete… Such is our gamut of interests that leads to the query: after all, do ideas have a place in this? Thematic Sessions (TSs) of oral presentations, posters and scientific initiation posters by undergraduate students The XI Seminar on the History of the City and of Urbanism will have an opening session in the evening of October 5, three round tables in the mornings of October 6 to 8 and four simultaneous Thematic Sessions that include oral presentations in the afternoons of these same days, besides poster presentations (these presentations derive from specific registrations and from the remaining oral presentations), as well as scientific initiation posters by undergraduate students. There is also the possibility of Interaction Sessions for research groups. For the oral presentations and posters, it is compulsory to submit the complete paper, including its abstract, so that the Scientific Committee for the respective Thematic Session is able proceed the selection. For the scientific initiation posters and the Interaction Sessions, it is compulsory to submit the complete text. We would like to highlight the fact that the oral presentations, the posters and the scientific initiation posters should be registered according to the Thematic Sessions of the event. For further details, please see Rules for the Submission of Papers. The XI Seminar on the History of the City and of Urbanism will select the 96 papers that will be included in the event annals according to the different forms of participation. Of these papers, 84 will refer to the oral presentations and 12 from the posters. Besides those, there will be the 20 posters from the scientific initiation by undergraduate students and from selected Interaction Sessions. The submitted papers must be original and unpublished and must make explicit the methodological and conceptual lines that underlie them. The registrations for the XI SHCU, as specified above, will be destined to the reflection, the analysis, the debate and the spread of the emerging ideas and issues related to topics connected to the main theme, as follows: TS1: Formation of urbanism and constitution of urbanistic thinking Investigation of urbanism as a science and disciplinary field: The conception of cities and professional formation.
