This is not the possible festival...
it is the necessary festival
Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, 2013. This is the space and time in which Imaginarius
is taking place. It is in this space and time that this text is being written.
praxis, encouraging different approaches to Santa Maria da Feira's public space
and privileging proposals that question and integrate the local community. The
quantity and quality of the applications we have received prove that there is a
strong vitality in creation, mainly home-grown, which is worthy of being safe and
persistently supported and stimulated. Consequently, this year the festival will be
awarding the three best projects with the possibility of an artistic residency with
a view to the festival's 2014 programming.
A festival in this present is built with people. People-citizens who believe in other
possible “Imaginaries”. To them I express my gratitude, specially to the ones who
are the least visible - yet just as essential - during these construction processes.
During the last year, based on 12 years of experience, we sought to redefine
strategies and courses of action; proposals were explored, and the festival's
philosophy was rethought for the next four years. Our dialogue with the local
community, namely the artistic one, was strengthened, fundamental subjects were
debated at the Imaginarius Talks, and training and organizational needs were
updated and envisioned.
The occupation of the old city Slaughterhouse (“Matadouro”), where young creators
develop their activity, shows the festival's continuous connection to the community
and it's deep-rooted vocation towards a local artistic creation with strong links
to other national and international projects. In this sense, Imaginarius is also
investing in training, by organizing an offer of workshops within this year's edition.
This festival's major challenge is to retain and deepen its vocation for public space,
while adapting its paradigm to the human scale in its relationship with a city like
Santa Maria da Feira, with its particular physical and human geography, which is
organically linked to street arts.
In 2013, the festival will contemplate 12 co-productions and programming
partnerships which, more than a number, represent the will and fulfilment of
synergies that result in genuine networking – local, regional, national and international.
Bodies in Urban Spaces, by Cie Willi Dorner, is a good example of a coproduction with the Serralves Foundation – a project whose cast and architectures
are shared by the cities of Oporto e Santa Maria da Feira.
This year, our programming mirrors this persistent, contemporary search. Among
the 117 entries, involving 402 artists, during three days that will transform the city's
public space in its rapport with the public that will inhabit it, we would like to point
out the diversity of artistic languages, with the strengthening of the visual arts
component through Vilhs' conceptual cork piece executed by workers from that
area – Diorama Cork Faktory. One should also stress the diversity of the 16
countries with creations, formats and contents in our programming.
And because this festival is happening in 2013, the world we are inhabiting in the
here and now inspires an “Imagined Europe” as the main subject of the International
Conference on Arts and Public Space, the world première of Teatro O Bando's
Jangada de Pedra, and antagon theater AKTion's inquisitive Ginkgo.
And it is precisely because we are living this moment that this festival is necessary.
For its will to transform, for the space open to creation, for the occupation of public
space, for the full exercise of the right to access cultural fruition, for its educational,
community, economical, urban and tourism impact on our territory.
Imaginarius' transformation from mere programmer to creative structure has been
consolidated, which is highlighted by the festival's 19 world premières, and its
own productions, such as Baile das Bicycletas, the European Project of music
and dance Urban Ballets, or Community Theatre Project Travessia. Our will to
overcome the idea that cultural activity is restricted to a linear relationship in which
the artists transmit their heritage to the audience without contemplating the latter's
action as sensitive beings and reality builders justifies our clear and unequivocal
investment in original creations as a distinguishing feature of this festival. This logic
introduces a perception of the individual as being more than a cultural consumer,
taking on the role of an emancipated producer within the process. In addition,
local communities are active and critically involved in the creative processes of
several of the programme's projects.
What are we still willing to “pay” for just living the possible instead of the necessary?

‘baile das bicycletas’
portugal
imaginarius creation | world premiere
First there was an invitation by the festival to imagine a show with and around
bicycles. It is an intermediate transportation means that goes beyond walking
and running while remaining linked to human strength.
One pedals for pleasure, pedals by conviction, pedals for the glory.
It is about gathering cycling enthusiasts, but also curious people, men and women,
some able to keep their balance on two wheels, others not really, around this
project and invent a peloton.
This peloton, like the caravans of perpetually moving nomads, is a big family made
up of the residents of Santa Maria da Feira, actors and musicians. There are five
teams competing, each looking for victory but all depending on one another.
There is a starting line, a race, a finish line, a path crossing the city...

Blast – An explosion of energy, music, colour and dance is the motto for a parade
that will invade the streets of Santa Maria da Feira, on 24 and 25 May. It will be
a concentration of movements, images and contemporary urban sounds, with
rhythms from Europe and Africa. Audience participation throughout the entire
length of the parade will be the fuse that will feed and make the whole show
explode.

The visual part of the parade will be directed by choreographers from three different
countries, bringing together influences from hip-hop, house and various South
African urban styles, while its musical direction will include four different nationalities,
combining Portuguese traditional percussion instruments and instruments built
from recycled materials, with other sounds with a strong component of electric
and electronic instruments.
Blast is a stage for interdisciplinary experimentation, where cultures meet and
celebrate, which results in a fusion show played by communities that do not
usually work together. It sets an example in social inclusion work. It is a great party
for its audience.

With the participation of over 400 persons, the Blast - Urban Ballets project will
also feature a strong component of urban plasticity, with people dancing on
imaginary instruments. Costumes have been based in harmonic conceptual
elements, with references to urban musical tradition and including Portuguese folk
elements, with a strong focus on local raw materials, profiting from the synergies
of the whole region, which is rich in an innovating and diverse industry. We have,
therefore, a group of colourful flying hats that intensify the parade's goal: to
consecrate music and movement. This project also features the construction and

‘bodies in urban spaces’
austria
imaginarius creation | world premiere
The Cie. Willi Dorner was founded in 1999 by Willi Dorner and is based in Vienna.
Originally trained as a dancer at Konservatorium Privatuniversiät Vienna, Willi
Dorner works as a choreographer, produces performances and installations,
photographs, videos and films.
Besides his internationally touring dance performances, Willi Dorner is keen on
creating events that give the audience the opportunity for new experiences, insights
and a different perception of everyday life.
Reviews
For sheer magnetic excitement, the Vienna-based choreographer Willi Dorner set in motion
on the streets of Center City one of the most engaging public performances seen in recent
years.
Jonathan M. Stein, 2009
… the space between a lamppost and a wall will not be the same.
Ballet.magazine UK, John Mallinson, October 2009
Bodies in Urban Spaces is a temporary intervention in a diversified urban
architectonic environment. The intention of “Bodies in urban spaces” is to point
out the urban functional structure and to uncover the restricted movement
possibilities and behaviour, as well as rules and limitations.
By placing the bodies in selected spots, the interventions provoke a thinking
process and produce irritation. Passers-by, residents and audience are motivated
and prompted to reflect on their urban surrounding and their own movement
behaviour and habits.
As a moving trail choreographed for a group of dancers, Bodies in urban spaces
leads the audience through selected parts of public and semi-public spaces.
It invites the residents to walk their own city, thus establishing a stronger relationship
with their neighbourhood, district and town. The interventions are temporary and
leave no traces behind, only imprints in the eye-witnesses' memory.

imaginarius creation | world premiere
This project's specific goal is to create a show for Imaginarius 13, whose actors
are residents/neighbours of Santa Maria da Feira (joining three parishes, Lobão,
Louredo and Guisande, which, as part of a national territorial reorganization, are
currently in the process of merging into one). The objective in the middle term is
that this show will result in consolidating a community theatre group that will grow
and develop. The show is centred on the collective memory, a work methodology
that has existed in Argentina for almost 30 years, called “From Neighbours to
Neighbours”
The neighbours were directed by theatre, music and visual arts professionals, in
a context which enabled them to develop their creativity within a collective creation
based upon memory and identity.

Travessia (”Crossing”) brings back some of the historical moments of the last few
years, narrated from the point of view of Santa Maria da Feira's neighbours. It is
a journey that touches identity from the reports, fragments and memories of the
neighbours. This collective production constructs a narration that weaves moments
that lie dormant in the collective memory, incorporating the local characters and
folk legends. The neighbours are both creators and protagonists of their own story
in this production that aims to integrate the artistic praxis into the everyday lives
of local residents.
At the same time, and from the same material, muralist Omar Gasparini will sketch
a mural which he will paint with all the neighbours. The mural, to be unveiled at
the Festival, is an excellent way of bringing the residents of Santa Maria da Feira
together to participate.
This way, by making Art/Theatre, one intends to unite different groups, generations,
histories and everyday lives, thus boosting social dynamics and promoting personal
and collective development.

‘diorama cork faktory’
portugal
imaginarius creation | world premiere
Alexandre Farto (1987), a visual artist, has been developing his work in an urban
environment, under the name of “Vhils”, since he started doing graffiti, in the early
2000's. Having grown in Seixal, a region with a large industrial tradition, he was
strongly influenced by the intense development that transformed Portugal during
the 80's/90's. An avid experimentalist, he has developed his aesthetics of vandalism
in interventions and in solo and collective exhibits around the world, on a wide
array of media – from stencil painting to the mural sculpture technique – which
has projected him as one of the most acclaimed names in world urban art
panorama.
Diorama Cork Faktory is a large format sculpture based on the Diorama series,
whose scale fills the space of an old factory with links to the cork industry. Its
intricate lines express the close relationship between human beings and their
working environment, a complex web of mutual influence which gives shape and
substance to their bond. Made of cork, the piece explores the juxtaposition
between the individual's social and cultural identity and the industrial environment
where he plies his trade, while also reflecting on industry's role in the economy
and the lack of investment that has plagued Portugal's secondary sector during
the last few decades, as well as on the consequences that this abandonment has
had on individuals and populations who depend on it. The piece will be carried
in a procession by factory workers and placed on the City Hall's side wall facing
Gaspar Moreira Square, where it will be exhibited for a fortnight. This action intends
to pay tribute to the workers' toil, while also underlining the importance of technical
work in artistic activity. Through the shadow play propitiated by its form, the piece
takes on the role of a representative model that allows a new perspective and an
extensive panoramic interpretation of the urban industrial contexts we live and
work in, and of this process of mutual moulding.

teatro o bando
‘a jangada de pedra ’
portugal
world premiere
Rafts all of us leaving not yet knowing where for, setting off from the vices and the
old, effete systems. All of us looking at that fragmented rock, that Europe divided
into so many centres and as many peripheries. All of us searching for the difference,
the identity, the sovereignty and asking the other travellers: WHERE ARE WE
GOING?
Founded in 1974, one of the oldest cultural cooperatives in the country, Teatro
O Bando sees itself as a collective that chooses aesthetic transfiguration as a
way of civic and community involvement. O Bando's creations are defined by their
visual and scenographic features, particularly marked by their Stage Machines
and their dramaturgical work. Mainly by Portuguese authors, the texts they stage
are mostly non-dramatic works, to which the theatrical form lends a whole different
communicability. Teatro O Bando continues to pursue singularity in their creations
through a collectivist methodology that seeks difference, interference, rupture and
colliding points of view. Rural or urban, adult or infant, erudite or popular, national
or universal, dramatic, narrative or poetic – such are the boundaries that Teatro
O Bando got used to trespassing. Throughout their path, the group became
involved in multiple national and international projects, and their investment in
travelling still takes several shows around the country and across borders. After
many addresses, for twelve years now Teatro O Bando has been residing in a
farm in Vale dos Barris – Palmela, where a yet unknown number of potential stages
made of stars, olive trees and boulders.

Vita
”The task of art, culture, education, and the upbringing of the future generations
can only be to sensitize humans to comprehend that they can break through the
reins of control and once again perceive themselves as part of the Earth.” Josef
Mayer
antagon theater AKTion, founded by Bernhard Bub in 1990 as the theatre on
Wheels, is an independent performance theatre of the modern times, a theatre
which nonetheless searches for traces of the forgotten, traditional roots of the
theatre.
”Energy is there, where people come together with their strengths and weaknesses.
It is a long process that differs greatly from the short-of-breath atmosphere that
characterizes our current social situation, which cannot be won with money or
deals. In the organic theatre, if it is about an honest and direct relationship to life,
the human being is in the middle as the most important aspect.” – Bernhard Bub,
Artistic Director, antagon theater AKTion
For us, theatre is the process that occurs within a group while collaborating on a
project. antagon works with performers from all over the world, activating the
audiences' senses with our voices and our bodies, through music, acrobatics and
improvisation, by dancing on stilts, with fire, surrounded by sculptural stages built
on the spot.
“The theatre is not violence, it is erosion. It likes to wear down the moulds of
society. In contrast to a hurricane, it is rather like water or the wind, which form
the ever changing face of the Earth in nearly imperceptible ways.” Omar Valiño
Ginkgo is a racy outdoor performance with pyrotechnic effects, fire, stilt artists,
hanging installations as well as self – composed live music – a composition that
creates vivid, haunting and, at the same time, poetic moments. The première took
place in Bucharest, Romania, in 2008. Ginkgo has a 360° setting, mostly overhead,
for a big audience. Play time is approximately 70 minutes.
Its content is linked to the nuclear disaster in 1945. It shows how, even in a
seemingly inverted world of egoism, exploitation, ecological devastation and wars,
nature puts all its force at any time in living. Catastrophes can´t set back the force
of nature. After the atomic strike on Hiroshima, the Ginkgo tree was nothing than
a charred stump. However, it started out to new live.
On a rather futuristic stage setting, a group of human beings struggles for life.
Then they find hope and trust in the invincible, positive power of nature, origin for
growth and prosperity.
Where do humans find this power? How do we generate it? Is it an already existing,
every human inherent power, concealed deep down inside of us, like old and
forgotten memories?
In an atmosphere of constant changes that we might very well perceive as
threatening, our theatre dares to look back on the last six decades and, with this
in mind, asks what Hiroshima has changed and whether we can live under the
burden of the atomic threat.
The tragic nuclear accident 2011 in Fukushima had a tremendous impact on the
latest revival of Ginkgo.
Ginkgo asks whether it is still possible nowadays to believe in a dignified world
worth living in and answers the question positively.

‘hygiene’
portugal
Grupo XIX de Teatro has devoted the last 10 years to a continuous work of
thematic research devoted to Brazilian history, an aesthetic research involving the
exploration of historic buildings as scenic spaces and an investigation on active
audience participation. Since 2004, the group conducts an artistic residency at
the Maria Zélia Workers Village in Belém (São Paulo), which has been declared
a national monument. The group is currently sponsored by PETROBRÁS.
Hygiene, the group's second play, is the result of the “A Residência”, one of the
12 projects approved by the City of São Paulo's Theatre Investment Act (January
2004). For this play, the group was nominated for the 2005 Shell Theatre Award
and the Bravo! Prime Culture Award as one of the three best shows of the year,
and won, for best show of the year, the 2005 Brazil Quality Award – São Paulo.
In 2006, the group took part in the Official Selection of Contemporary Theatre of
the Curitiba Theatre Festival, in the Londrina International Festival, in the Extrema
Festival (Mato Grosso), in the Riocenacontemporânea, Araquara Festival,
Proximidades – Theatre Groups Meeting – Fortaleza (Ceará) and in the Paidéia
Festival. The play was also awarded with the PETROBRÁS FUNARTE Circulação
Nacional Award, which completed a season in the cities of Blumenau (Santa
Catarina), Santos (São Paulo), Salvador (Bahía), Ouro Branco and Diamantina
(Mina Gerais). In 2010, it was performed in Rio Branco (Acre) and Belo Horizonte
(Minas Gerais) and its circulation project was approved by ProAc (São Paulo)
leading to performances in Jacareí and Sorocaba. Since its première it has
completed several seasons in the city of São Paulo.
Formed in 1995 as an amateur structure, the Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte
has developed an extensive activity in the field of Contemporary Dance. The period
between 1996 and 1997 witnessed the assertion and development of the existing
talent and willingness, which gained the attention from official entities, both local
and national. BCN relied from its beginning on financial support from the Estarreja
City Council, and in 1997 was granted a one-time subsidy by the Ministry of
Culture (IPAE).
With a permanent concern for the artistic future of the BCN project, one sought
to stimulate from the start the desire and talent for choreographic creation in all
members of its structure. To invest in the talent of BCN's young dancers is to
invest in the future of Contemporary Dance's artistic creation and, at the same
time, to put to practice the idea championed by Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte
of decentralizing artistic production: BCN is a place for creation and experimenting,
dialogue and discussion, exchanging ideas and knowledge, always with Art in
general and Dance in particular as its backdrop.
Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte is currently taking up a residency in Santa Maria
da Feira, with the support of the local City Council and the Feira Viva municipal
company, envisioning a new leap forward in its career and the beginning of a new
cycle in its life.
A Construção: How many persons does it take to build an idea? To give meaning
to the things we build every day?
This construction comes from nowhere. It springs from the will to create and give
meaning to an idea, the idea of building a space that can shelter all. A centre for
concerns and projections of a near future.
Built by unusual persons, designed by unusual persons, and perceived by other,
equally unusual ones. We have built the idea that it is possible to build and continue,
in a perpetual circular movement.
From a collaboration with the Prison of Santa Cruz do Bispo, where the performers
are temporarily living, this “Construction” was born.
Hygiene reflects on the historical moment when Brazil was being rapidly built,
and taking thousands of emigrants everyday. That was the contingent of cultures
and ideas that lived together in the large tenements in central Rio de Janeiro. And,
from that melting pot, it didn't take long for the seeds of important manifestations
of Brazilian identity to arise, alongside the social inequalities that have a profound
impact on our present day dilemmas.
By telling the story of workers, immigrants, washerwomen, whores, freed slaves,
healers and traders in turn-of-the-century Rio de Janeiro, when housing became
a public issue and society, inspired by European urban models, decided to put
to practice the concept of the single-family house, Grupo XIX de Teatro brings to
the surface the features that will leave a deep impression on the construction of
Brazilian identity. Samba, religious syncretism and workers struggles, among other
sociocultural manifestations, were originated in those collective residences. By
putting those past lives in contact with today, one is highlighting Brazil's dilemmas
and challenges for the future.

‘estás a olhar p'ra mim?’

portugal
Promoted by Casa dos Choupos, the Poesia no Corpo, Corpo na Poesia
project aims to experience performance in an attempt to transform a space, taking
into account collective creation and the performer as a total being.
It promotes intergenerational cooperation and collective involvement, as it relies
on the participation of 12 individuals with ages ranging from 12 to 76. If, on the
one hand, Poetry benefits from being a place open to crossings with other arts,
namely Dance, on the other hand, Dance also benefits from being able to experience
other universes, such as the Word.
It's been 20 years since the moment when a group of young people took their
first steps in theatre. Still today, it is in the village of Campo Benfeito, lost between
labyrinthine paths and hills circling Montemuro Mountain, that the team arduously
labours at creating innovative projects. Besides these persons, each new project
brings to Campo Benfeito new collaborators from all over the country and abroad.
Actors, stage designers, playwrights and stage directors travel to the village feeling
enthusiastic for creating something different, something singular. Being a company
in a rural environment, Teatro do Montemuro is obligated, but also pleased, to be
a travelling company, 21st century “harlequins”, that relies heavily on large sets,
detailed costumes, masks, props and live music. Throughout these years as a
professional theatre company, the group has distinguished itself for the authenticity
and originality of its texts, visual, music, and also for the work of its actors, based
on truth, emotion, joy and physicality taken to exhaustion.
Estás a olhar p’ra mim? (”Are you looking at me?”) is a piece about dance in
people's lives, about giving and sharing. Dancing with your eyes closed. Dancing
in a group. Dancing alone. Dancing in the streets. Dancing at home. Dancing with
a partner...
Twelve persons of different ages demonstrate the pleasure of dancing, in a piece
that reflects upon intimacy and desire. By dancing, each performer is rewarded
by the sensation of that pleasure, through movements that are present in their
lives.
Teatro do Montemuro has now created a new street project. Que Raio de
Mundo (“What Kind of a World”) is an entertaining and exiting new story. A show
full of surprises and with a strong musical side. As always, a set that is rediscovered
at every moment. Somewhere between a music concert, a physical theatre
performance and a surreal political rally by a party that doesn't exist yet, a bunch
of old-school storytellers seize the moment and the fact that the people has
gathered around the old oak to earn some extra change, entertain us and make
us think.

national premiere
Founded on 21 April, 1984, the Bismas das Acácias group was the result of a
merger of groups, namely the Acácias, the Pop's and a bunch of boys that break
danced. The name of the group was inspired by the abundance of “Marias” in its
midst (“Bis” for “repetition” + “Mas” for “Marias” = BISMAS); and because they
were from Benguela, known as the City of Acacias. The group is currently owned
by Bismas das Acácias - Acção para a Cultura e Desenvolvimento (since November
1998).
It sees itself as one of the bulwarks of the roots of Angolan culture, through its
rural research of national folklore that is the base for the creation of its choreographies.
This will be its third appearance in Portugal - the first was in 1995 and the second
at Expo 98.
The dances that will be performed (Koti Kolumbula, Ndungo, Ukongo, Firmino,
Cidungue, Sindeta...) portray the everyday lives of Angolans in the fields of
agriculture, hunting, leisure and cultural institutions like evamba (a school fore male
initiation among the ovimbundo people),
marriage and masked folklore, and many others.
It won the dance category of the first National Culture Festival “FENACULT/89”.
In 2007, it received the National Culture Award for dance - the highest state
accolade in the field.
The battle continues, for, according to its motto, “movement without effort is
worthless”.
It has toured Egypt (1988 and 2000), Sweden (1998 and 2000), Spain (Expo
2008), Rwanda (2011), South Africa (1999) and Namibia (1997).
In 1998, after passing through the Archaos and Plume circuses, Sylvain Granjon,
Alexandre Demay and Danier Péan created the Les Bleus de Travail company.
Six shows were performed: “ça s'annonce mal” in 1999, for the theatre
“Sous les pavés, les Bleus” in 2002, for the street;
Then in a duo with Alexandre Demay and Sylvain Granjon: “Bonjour Bonheur” in
2004, for the theatre, “Le Ring” in 2005, for the street, “Le voyage de noces”,
2009, street;
Then solo: “Les histoires de Marcel”, 2008, clown by Alexandre Demay, “Mr Sylvain
et son petit chien”, 2008, act with a dog by Sylvain Granjon.
More than 800 performances in 12 countries and 5 languages (France, Spain,

Trupe Koskowisck is a group of actors-clowns which develop work and research
in Street Theatre, Circus and Circus-Theatre. It was born in 2005, performing
improvised scenes on the street. Presently, it aims to perform sketches with
differentiated looks and language, while, of course, keeping all its essence. Their
repertoire includes about 12 shows. Their history features several important events,
such as: II International Female Clowns Festival /07; SESC Street Theatre
Exhibition/09; Satyrianas 2009/10/11; Rio das Ostras Nacional Festival RJ/10;
Patacomico Festival - El Bolsón - Patagónia 2012/2013.
After several years of work, the Crassh project was born spontaneously, but with
determination, in 2007, in the county of Oliveira do Bairro. It resulted from the
dedication of Bruno Estima, its mentor and artistic director, together with the work
and commitment of 12 percussionists. Besides countless other performances,
in 2012 it toured the European Capitals of Youth and Culture. The CRASSH
project was awarded with: 1st Place TETRA 07 – d'ORFEU Águeda; 1st Place
JOVENS Criadores IPJ 08 (musical field) - National; 1st Place Carlos Marques 08
– EAB; Trophy “Performance on Stage 2009” – Aveiro FM e 1st Place GrandeC
2011 – Ministry of Education. Crassh presents shows that are adaptable to all
stages and audiences, with no language barriers and suitable for all ages. The
Crassh performances reach their peak during the moments of interaction with the
audience, making for total, surprising and captivating shows. Its audience is served
by a contagious energy, energetic playing and full-proof humour. Crassh_Street
is made with buckets, pipes, helmets, saws... everything becomes a motive and
an instrument for creating movement and sound. In Street, voice is a new element
where all lyrics are in “Crasshonese”, a universal language.
Olha o palhaço no meio da rua (“Look at the clown in the middle ofthe street”)
is a musical concert. The two musician clowns fight for the audience's attention,
in a competition that admits all kinds of tricks and traps. Unusual situations ensue.
Mice, water and baby powder on the face are just a few of those gimmicks. The
show spontaneously divides the audience, seduced by conventional and alternative
instruments alike. The various rhythms and each one's favourite style encourage
the audience to take part in that dispute.
When they realise that there is no harmony when they are apart, they join forces
to produce a great and unusual show.
Right after the musical, the clowns perform classic circus openings and encores
like “Abelha Abelhinha”, “Pilherias”, “Malabares Cómico” and Magia Cómica”. This
time, the audience is invited to take an active part in the scenes, thus strengthening
the bond between the spectators and the artists.
All sketches are circus classics that were passed on orally from one generation
to the next.

would depart from conventional theatre based on text or written narrative.
From the ambition of composing visual, physical theatre, and inspired by “Plank
piece” by Charles Ray – an installation featuring himself bending over a wooden
plank – “Hangover” was born, premièring in Moirana (NO), at the Nordland
Teater, in March 2007. In May of the same year, Hangover was staged at the
Stamsund Festivalen in Lofoten (NO).
João Pamplona returned to Portugal in 2011, recruited a work team and repremièred Hangover at the Manobras no Porto festival in 2012.
Uggh… Blahhh. Nhec. Burp. Glup. Ppfii… Plof! Flush... Done.
Slowly I pull myself together and, shamelessly, rapidly wrap myself in a frantic,
slimy whirlpool of immaculate impurity.
My muse is my stool.
Mr. Shimokawa is a performance that has been developed from a brief presentation
by the students of contemporary dance, part of the BOOM show by the All About
Dance Academy. The piece's starting point is the hero of the story “Abandon the
Old in Tokyo” by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, which focuses the piece's essence on the gut
feelings experienced during a casual and unwelcome visit to the most vulgar of
community lavatories.
Diana Carneiro – Graduated in Dance by the Balleteatro Escola Profissional
(2003/2006), with a degree in Entertainment and Cultural Production from the
Oporto Higher Artistic School (2006/2009) and a post-graduate in Arts Management
by the Catholic University of Oporto. Participated in several workshops and training
courses, where she learned different techniques, in London, Brussels, Berlin and
Portugal. Presently she is a dancer and choreographer at the LABU Dance
Company, and performed “Psicanálise” at the Hard Club in Oporto and Mais
Imaginarius 2012; and “Uma Pequena Morte” at Made in Feira 2012. In the same
year she led the Choreographic Creation Lab by Companhia Instável, which
resulted in the solo “Daddy's Little Girl”. She is a dancer at the All About Dance
company.
Hangover
“Hangover will never be the same”.
Three strangers wake up in a closed space with no comfort and, apparently, no
exits either. With no idea where they are or how they got there, they all share a
common grievance – a terrible hangover. Will they withstand this situation?
Hangover was born by researching the meaning of word in a particular space with
specific situations that promote actions of a physical nature.
It's an almost dialogue-free performance, with a painful humour subject to multiple
interpretations. Hangover, hang-over, over.

‘residual gurus’
france

Cie du P'tit Vélo has worked since 2001 around a surrealist, musical, circus-like,
poetic incursion, everywhere and for everyone. This human and artistic adventure
develops, working collectively, an atypical fanfare. Improvisation, direct contact
with the audience and the world of travelling make the singularity of this company.
Residual Gurus was born of the idea of creating a street show that would combine
quality music and mime theatre with a component of social criticism, thus raising
consciousness regarding the issues of today's world, like interpersonal reclusion,
economical inequalities and industrial overproduction, from a humorous and
creative point of view, serving all kinds of audiences.
Music is this show's central axis, its main inspiration source being Southern India's
carnatic percussion and its rhythmic language – the so-called konnakol. The
sounds made by materials from the industrial society (bottles, pipes and cans),
together with the magic of Bali's gamelan gongs, create a style somewhere
between electronic music, new-age and Brazilian beats. The combination of these
– apparently so distant – elements is just a sample of the globalized reality we live
in; a reality that favours, at the same time, totally original, innovating music. Since
its première at the 2009 Tàrrega Theatre Fair, the show has been performed in
various festivals around the world, always generating a positive reaction from
audiences and promoters alike, making Residual Gurus a constantly evolving
show.
Pétafun Tour – A crazy street punk fanfare, both travelling and fixed. Aboard a
tiny car towing a mini-caravan, 6 reckless musicians drag their patched universe,
their battered metals and their overflowing energy; their accordion player muffled
by the loud bass-drums and the backfiring exhaust. They will turn your bodies
into an undulating material for an unforgettable, unique and warm moment.
For the Imaginarius festival, this wild bunch is inviting an artist from the Au Tour
Du Nez company, born in Santa Maria da Feira, for a French-Portuguese creative
meeting.
The P'tit Vélo company has participated in the international street theatre Aurillac
festival (France); Rendez Vous Chez Nous festival in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso);
Nuit des Lampions in Wiltz (Luxembourg), Fête de la Brebis in Réquista (France).

‘the invasion’

national premiere
The Ljud group was established in 2006, aiming to bring high quality contemporary
art to a wider audience. It consists of directors, performers and visual artists from
across Europe dedicated to exploring the possibilities of artistic expression in
public space and new theatrical forms based on interaction rather than presentation.
The Invasion project is a mixture of visual spectacle and interaction between
audience and actors, based on non-verbal physical theatre and site-specific live
compositions.
An interplanetary expedition of immigrants from outer space has landed on our
planet. Members of the expedition belong to different alien species, but as a
reaction to the Earth atmosphere they have all gained a new protective colour, so
that humans would not take them too seriously.
Every alien character has its own story, its own ways of communicating, and
challenges the public in a different way. The aliens have a special sensibility, seeing
the world around us as a completely new and exiting place. In search of a new
home, they try to integrate into our society.
The Invasion examines questions concerning multicultural societies and the
conventions of behaviour in public space. The audience is invited to react
spontaneously, become part of the story and join the performers as they explore
the border between fiction and reality, establishing theatre as a game, a ritual and
a social event.
Prepare yourself for some truly unexpected “interplanetary” dialogue.
But please, don't panic! They come in pink …

orquestra todos

Orquestra Todos – A Lisboan Dream
I always thought that the reality of a large city is made of complex relationships
that are weaved everyday between people and places. Thus, cities often into
laboratories for experimenting with everyday life: being, thinking, living.
Meeting different cultures is, as I see it, an added value that belongs in every
city's history. These meetings transform and remodel relationships between
people and the very meeting spaces. As maestro Mario Tronco used to say
at the concerts by Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio and Orquestra Todos, “Mixing
cultures creates beauty. Mixtures and contaminations are one of the basis of
contemporary cultures. Naples is unique and fascinating because it's Arab,
French, Spanish... Like it's own language, Neapolitan, which contains all those
sonorities; even German.”
This project for a Lisboan Orchestra, which was born in the midst of TODOS
Festival, sprang from several meetings with Italian Maestro Mario Tronco,
during the many concerts by the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio (OPV) in Lisbon.
From those meetings and many exchanges of views concerning the role played
by culture in various cities and countries around the world, questions/reflections
on art arose:
The importance of art and the need for its existence within both individual and
social life;
The analysis of the strength of artistic projects as an engine for the development
of contemporary social life;
The redefinition of the role of artistic programming – from its own spaces, its
relationship with the public, its links with the territory and the presence of artists
and their creations in that territory;
The arts configure a living sensitive space in order to invent new meeting
arrangements for the various communities that inhabit the city and its territory
– a cultural place that provides us with a feeling of common belonging and
helps the community to look differently at life;
Art as one of life's necessities; art as a world view, art which is missed, art
which is mindful of social transformations, a reflex of changes, art as a living
space, full of critical questions regarding world order;
The role of art in our society – the cultural identity of a city from its relationship
with art, the various urban spaces and artistic creation.
Festival Todos is a place for cultural practices around a multicultural geographic
territory in the city of Lisbon. It was here that the adventure of Orquestra Todos
began, in the same way the history of OPV started in the Esquilino neighbourhood
in Rome, 10 years ago - as an answer to artistic and political concerns in
search of a praxis; bringing to life a project that had been though by others
before, but never consummated.
After OPV's concert at the TODOS Festival, Caminhada de Cultural in 2009,
at Largo do Intendente, near Martim Moniz, the idea came up to create a new
musical project from Lisbon. Mario Tronco and Pino Pecorelli, both from OPV,
were ready to start a new experience, where it would be possible to find new
sounds, other cultures, new musicians. A new orchestra could be born from
the sounds that Portuguese culture welcomes and contains from the richness
of the relationships it always nourished with territories both near or on the
other side of the world: northern, central and southern Portugal, Cape Verde,
India, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola.
Project TODOS, Caminhada de Culturas and Academia de Produtores Culturais
were, at the same time, the engine and the context for the birth and growth
of this orchestra. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Lisbon City
Council/GLEM (Gabinete Lisboa Encruzilhada de Mundos) were our leading
partners.
Creating the group of musicians that would become the orchestra's organic
future was a fascinating process.
The search for the various possible musical connections, the research of
various musicians in all of the city's social contexts, street included, under the
watchful guidance of Francesco Valente, an Italian bassist and an adopted
Lisboan musician, made it possible for us to have an effective relationship with
the multicultural musical world of mixed-blood Lisbon, the hidden musical
Lisbon. The first rehearsals took place in the heart of Mouraria, at Sport Club
do Intendente. Ours is an experimental work method that is built upon each
of the musical and cultural personalities, according to our own concept of
collective; continuously adding and subtracting in our search for a common
language.
Generosity and knowing how to learn and give build, throughout rehearsals,
the possible group.
All musicians in the orchestra live in Portugal and bring their cultural heritage
with them. The fact that they remained in this country enables the first mixture.
They no longer belong to their country but they are not Portuguese yet. They
are foreigners everywhere and in search of a new culture that mixes them all.
Orquestra Todos is the meeting place where a common language is born that
belongs only to this group and this collective.
This music and this culture speak their own language, which is mixture of them
all. Bastard music, with many fathers and many mothers: that is the nature
and pride of this orchestra.
Considerations and points of view in search of a cultural praxis.

MAIS IMAGINARIUS COMPANIES
More Imaginarius has established itself, in recent years, as an essential component of
the Imaginarius Festival, challenging and opening the public space to daring proposals
from young artists offering artistic paths that question the public's perceptions.
In 2013, More Imaginarius will privilege projects promoting independent thinking, taking
and assuming the risks of experimental creation and creating an informed and sustained
artistic praxis, as well as proposals that confront local culture and community with
contemporary artistic languages, in an On Trial / On Process (artistic objects that are
at an advanced stage of creation, but need a “shock/confrontation” with the public and
the presentation space in order to progress and evolve in their process) logic, thus
valuing concepts that will have a specific implementation in Santa Maria da Feira's public
space.
More Imaginarius'13 will contemplate proposals in eleven artistic fields, divided into two
great themes: Visual Arts and Performing Arts.
Visual Arts: New Media | Digital Art | Installation | Graffiti | Performing Arts: Theatre |

Replica of an uncontrolled eruption, an emergency, a sort of apotheosis. Me,
here, now, like a balloon about to reach its limit and burst. An ultra-concentrated,
abrupt moment of adrenalin release, filling me with potential energy that derealizes
and depersonalizes me. Maybe I'll be perplexed, terrorized or deployed…
oyed…oyed.
The Purple Ladies is a women-led collective of performers based in south-east
London. Their repertoire is eclectic and draws from aerial, dance, mime, physical
and visual theatre.
Their current formation emerged at the now vanished artist warehouse Area10,
where they organised site specific, cutting edge performances and Cabaret nights
such as Psychological Art Circus shows, Cabaret HomoLudens and Sawmill
Collective Events.
Since their birth in 2010 they have performed in various places in Europe such
as Wilton's Music Hall, The Pleasance Theatre, Jacksons Lane (Postcards Festival),
Stoke Newington International Airport, The Woolwich Grand Theatre (Kings of
Comedy) and Cuartel del Conde-Duque (Fringe Madrid).
Marco Ferreira – A dancer since 2004, he has worked with: Companhia de Dança
do Norte; Companhia Tok'Art, choreographed by André Mesquita; Companhia
Instável with Victor Hugo Pontes and Hofesh Shechter in 2011 and 2012. He was
part of the piece by Elisabeth Lambeck, the piece Rendez-Vous, A strage land
and Zoo by Victor Hugo Pontes and he performed a solo by Sylvia Rijmer. He
debuted as a choreographer in 2008 with Asylum, co-produced by All About
Dance and Feira Viva within Imaginarius 2010 and Duas Faces, co-created with
Mara Andrade.
Nevoeiro 21 premiered in 2012 at Palcos Instáveis and was revived at 'Mais
Imaginarius' 2012; he co-created Psicanálise by Plataforma Labu.
Human Possibilities will reveal the extraordinary story of a woman and her
washing machine, with poetry, aerial circus, dance and video projections.
On a day like any other, a friend/alter-ego appears from inside a washing machine,
subsequently unveiling an intimate story of mutual trust, love and laughter, and
after years of endless routine, leads to a vision of desire: a spectrum of possibilities
infinitely wider that one could imagine...
This piece's starting point was my interest in the impressions left by ash and rocks
from the volcanic impression in Pompeii in 79 AD. The bodies caught off-guard
in the middle of the emergency were petrified, and those who managed to escape
amongst the panic, dread and chock are not there to tell.
The Purple Ladies focus on giving voice and support to women as creators in all
disciplines. They strongly believe that art should be accessible to all, and dedicate
their activities to make it happen, through performances, live-art action and
workshops.
The performance moment that was found is mainly a warped exploration of reality.
A replica which, like all replicas, is faulty and different from the original. Nevertheless,
this is meant to be, in itself and as a whole, an ultra-concentrated, unpredictable
and intense moment, where the notion of emergency has been developed, and
connections are to be found with the biology of the “panic situation”, of an “anxiety
crisis” and a state of alert and watchfulness.

During the piece's construction, and as material was being collected, it was
fundamental not to lose the sensation of unpredictability and the feeling that the
piece could go anywhere at any time. These moments of emergency should be
perceived as flashes charged with emotions and instincts, during which the
components of time and control are almost withdrawn, and violent transformations
occur in fractions of a second.

national premiere
Desastronauts are a UK/Spanish contemporary circus company established in
2009. Its members are Girisho (UK) and Raquel Veganzones (Spain). They are
both graduates from the Circus Space in London. Raquel specialized in swinging
trapeze and Girisho in static trapeze. They originally began working together in
London in 2004 where they formed Circo Expreso, an aerial circus company.
Desastronauts was formed in Galicia, Spain, representing a move into unexplored
space and towards the many, many disasters ahead. Their first project, Losing
Grip, was selected by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe 2010.
Losing Grip is a highly skilled, physically demanding and beautifully presented
contemporary circus show. Using original aerial equipment and specially designed
harness clothing, the artists attempt a new approach to their discipline. Danger,
trust, balance, agility, strength and endurance become the language of their
relationship. Losing Grip is an honest and passionate performance beyond words,
beyond sentimentality and beyond limits.
Bárbara Andrez was born in 1983. She is a professional actress and a visual
artist. Her work crosses both universes, focusing on performance and voice. Her
vision is built on everyday subjects, like feminine issues, and a close connection
with film culture. By using words and iconography she seeks a direct communication
perception.
A twenty minute work-in-progress of Losing Grip was presented in Helsinki,
Malmitalo (August 2010), Strasbourg, Théâtre de Hautepierre (Sept. 2010) and
in Paris, Théâtre de la Cité Internationale (November 2010). Losing Grip had its
world premier at MIMARTE Festival, Braga, Portugal (06 July 2011), in France at
the ZOOM Festival, Académie Fratellini, Paris (29-30Sept. 2011) and in Spain at
the FIOT Festival, Carballo, Galicia (23 October 2011).
Since October 2011 Raquel and Girisho have taken a break from performing
Losing Grip to have a baby. The spring of 2013 signifies a return to performing
for Desastronauts.
Bump Dialogues is a performance work created for Imaginarius 2013. Its starting
point was the 2012 Carros de Choque video installation, where she explored the
deconstruction of urban rituals and popular celebrations. It is from this crossing
that Bump Dialogues appears: mouths in monologue, mouths that interact and
call to one another with festive sounds in the background. As it finds its space in
the performance work, the spoken voice both leans on and distances itself from
the performer's body. The words, sonorously placed in the body and in space by
the voice, reveal images and allow the characterization of experiences, thoughts
and distinctly feminine and stereotyped events. The uttered word thus reflects its
ultimate importance and it is up to the spectator to choose to follow these dialogues
that constantly bump each other. In the enlarged image of a mouth, the venue
for discourse is thus established.

Tresperté is a young company from Granada that mainly works in circus theatre,
taking circus as a technique and the theatre as a language. Its works feature trio
acrobatics and humour, never forgetting to convey a message to the audience
and tell a story. Everything from the search for movement to the coherence of a
story that can be understood by all audiences. Its career started in Andalusia in
2011, rapidly extending to the Tafalla Va de Calle Festival (2011, 1st place),
Certamen de Jòvenes Artistas de Calle de Mollina (2011, 4th place), or their début
as a professional company at the Circada de Sevilla Festival in June 2012. They
crossed the Mediterranean and toured Italy in 2012 (at such festivals as Lunathica
-where, for the first time abroad, they win an award - Sul Filo del Circo, Sarnico
Busker Festival, Salento Busker Festival…) and Germany (Circus Mignon - Sylt).
They premièred their latest work in February 2013 with the Beca de Artistas en
Residencia program of La Nave del Duende (Càceres).
The Talentitos Company, a French-German company, was created in 2007 in
Granada (Spain), a city that was the company's source of inspiration and base
during its first years.
We have worked in cabarets, street performances and theatres, and offer a fusion
of circus, dance and humour in an alternative format with a lovely personal touch.
The "multi-culti Company" stayed for a while time in Madrid, later ending up in
Berlin.
Circus and theatre at the rhythm of a radio tune. Jealousy, passion and love with
acrobatics. The story tells us of three artists and their technician who come to
perform for us an acrobatics show that they have been rehearsing for a long time.
Everything must be perfect.
We soon discover that there is something else. The tension underneath the show
makes it impossible for the relationship between them not to unveiled. Jealousy,
passion, love; feelings that cannot remain hidden, will be unveiled until a conclusion
is reached: Aquí sobra uno (”Somebody here is unwanted”).
La Boîte à Musique (“The Music Box”) is a one-woman clown show, directed
and performed by Salomé Hadji, which combines theatre, dance and circus.
Tired of her boring daily routine, the music-box doll creates an funny escape plan

The En CroQ Company was founded in 2010 within the AtelierTeatro Fisico (Turin,
Italy), thanks to the encounter between Luigi Ciotta and Aurélia Dedieu. The
company based its research on the roots of comic and popular theatre, combining
it with civic and social engagement.
BLISS Superstore
With diligence and passion, our experienced BLISS team will happily advise you
on all our BLISSful products that will change your life. A superstore with everything
you wish for and even more...
Funky Pudding, their first show, was also played in Italian and, later, in French,
Spanish and English. During the last three years, it has toured many international
festivals in several European countries, reaching almost 150 performances.
While Funky Pudding is a show of buffoonish clowning, it is certainly not your usual
clown show.
Big Mac and Marilyn are a heavily overweight couple that live “just like everyone
else”… except they live in a trash can; yes, the very the same sort of bin that we
all know. As they live in and play with the waste around them, our protagonists
create a caricature which describes the processes of consumerism and sheds
light on its very worst traits. They paint a slightly less than pretty picture of an
excessive, selfish and superficial society where all that is short-lived is regarded
as indispensable and all that is truly essential as boring.
Beware!.. for everything you wast can be used against you!
BLISSful Picnic
On Sunday BLISS will have a picnic and you're invited! Come and join a festive
moment together in one of our lovely enormous picnic dresses.
We are BLISS from a World of BLISS, an artist collective formed by Charlie Zwart,
Gwen van Zaane and Lauren M. Dyer. With our soft performance and social
sculptures we aim to grab hold of our audience and leave them mesmerised after
sharing a moment of happiness, a moment of BLISS.
Donning custom-made outfits and set against an idyllic backdrop, we are three
ladies who draw you into a world of BLISS: a picture perfect yet often mundane
world where the smallest details are carefully orchestrated, clichés meet surprising
elements and dreams come true. Every part of our universe, whether it be a
multiple, our installation or ourselves, is viewed as an opportunity to create a small
sculpture that's essential to our microcosm. With a wink and an endless smile
we welcome you into our world.
The nice thing about soft performance is the interaction we have with people, and
so we hope to bring our art to a wider audience. You don't have to fully understand
it to enjoy it, and that is a quality of ours we cherish; to be accessible. Each work
should be for people of all walks of life – not just for those who visit galleries or
museums. Our international upbringing and rich fantasy is probably what makes
our work so appealing and universal. We communicate through a visual language
that everybody understands.
A work of BLISS can been seen at festivals, exhibitions, openings and in public
space. Each work tells the story of a world of BLISS and is specifically designed
to the occasion, its location and its audience.

Sérgio Pantana and María Aguayo live in Lisbon but met dancing in Madrid.
They connected and danced. In Madrid, together with Iris Muñoz, Diana Bonilla
and Camille Hanson. In Lisbon, with Jácome Filipe, Sylvia Rijmer and others. They
danced together in projects led by Camille Hanson, Emanuele Sciannamea and
Jácome Filipe and, restless, they began to desire and finally generated: A space
of dismembering.
Boris Chimp 504 was born in 2010, in Barcelona, after Miguel Neto and Rodrigo
Carvalho completed their Master of Digital Arts from Pompeu Fabra University
(UPF) and, based on audiovisual improvisation, started to recreate the adventures
of cosmonaut chimpanzee Boris 504, an urban legend of space engineering,
allegedly sent by the Soviets on a mission to the Moon, having reported to Earth
for the last time on July the 7th,1969. This is a real time performance that enhances
the synthesis between audio and graphic languages , within a futuristic aesthetics,
with the intention of creating an immersive and multi sensory experience for the
audience.
Um espaço aberto de desmembramento (”An open space of dismembering”)
The Impossible is the state of all possibility: An absolute.
You and I in absolute simultaneousness.
Two solos which call for a Everything for two.
Dance is not a means. It is the thing.
The need for the maximum: An open space is a Spacial everything. By believing
in the non-existence of limits, we allow that very non-existence. We want to contain
everything: the space, the materials, and the flesh.
Mission to Kepler
During a recent exploration to Kepler22b, an exoplanet in the binary Kepler-16
solar system, Boris Chimp 504 finds some metallic objects on its surface. Although
of an unknown origin, one suspects they are pieces of technology from an
extraterrestrial civilization, and preliminary tests lead to believe that it is in fact an
interface to control the time-space position and orientation of something bigger,
perhaps a spacecraft...

O Clown Laboratori is a platform for training, creating and experimenting the
art of the clown. This project, launched in January of 2010, currently resides
in Fábrica da Rua da Alegria (ESMAE, Oporto).
Besides its continuous training, it also develops performances resulting from
research. Three productions in a cabaret format have been performed so far,
with sketches where comical effect is explored through the clown's simplicity,
naivety and generosity.
Monsters that abuse their lordosis. Apathetic. I let this seduction evolve. Unlimited
self-seduction. Someone shows up and it's late. A never ending growing line with
no return. On all fours, contortion. It's getting on my nerves, it's beyond me.
Ashamed, I turn into a monster with lordosis and something oozes. Gloomily, I
remember the past, five minutes ago, more or less.
Hello. My name is... I don't know, and it doesn't really matter. My back hurts.
In Oxitocina (”Oxytocin”), the performer suffers from several daily “little deaths”,
mediated by that hormone that nearly causes a transitory and orgasmic cerebral
ischemia. Expressions and sensations that we assume to be linked are broken,
and something new arises from this metamorphosis. A strange pansexual state.
There's no point in being squeamish about it: Labaret 3 is a cabaret about
death. So, can children come too? Yes, there is no realism, only the hilarity
that can be found underneath the subject.
How does a clown look at death? How far can our imagination and ability to
laugh go before the most obscure reality of human existence? After two years
of building a solid, rigorous and effective training path in the art of making
people laugh, the members of Clown Laboratori Porto have constructed their
darkest cabaret, once more under the direction of Pedro Fabião. While the
group's focus on a disarming stage energy continues, Labaret 3 has a different
breathing when compared to our previous show. We focused on the particulars
of the performance's construction, attention to detail and the use of silence.

Mattatoio Sospeso is a flying company founded by Marco Mannucci in 2006.
Each of their works results from collaborations with other artists. Climbing,
acrobatics, street theatre, theatre, out of the ordinary Poetics and circus are some
of its main ingredients. Evoking Chagall's suspended images, Mattatoio becomes
airborne, flying on the façades of towers, palaces and castles. Every new
performance is dedicated to the architecture that welcomes it, turning it into an
alternative theatre. These suspensions happen in a non-place where the law of
gravity does not apply, carrying the audience and the architecture, which are the
very objects of the performance, into another dimension: a dream-like dimension,
where anything can happen. There are no rules: you fly, you daydream.
Cychotron appeared in 2011. It is a group made up of people from different
backgrounds, but who all share the idea of creating an alternative, multidisciplinary
show that is able to bridge several artistic expressions, like Body Art, Theatre,
Performance and Electronic Music.
In a laboratory, the last stage of an experiment. A body is brought in and prepared
for Mankind's worst fate. Made into a puppet, for him Freedom no longer exists,
just his will is left, to be bent to the point of becoming unsustainable, until the
inevitable rebellion, the struggle for liberation. He represents Man in his eternal
attempt to dominate, to control, to create a new species of subdued beings,
regardless of their suffering, and the consequent struggle for liberation.
It refers us to the manipulation of consciences and behaviours and the loss of
acquired liberties and rights, reflecting the thinking of the ruling elites of so-called
developed western societies, and to the growing suffering and social struggle by
the oppressed classes and oppressed people in general.
A musical and visual show focusing on body suspension.
Tu me fais tourner la tête (“You Make My Head Spin”)
A mental space, 2 ropes, 2 figures, a flying rope. After fragmenting Chagall, Barthes
and Sartre, what remains, what begins?
Inspired the suspended figures in La Promenade, by Chagall, the acrobatic dance
is a space in suspension, a dream space, the driving force behind one's relationship
with the other.

Reminiscent of Fragments of love by R. Barthes, especially where he discusses
one's hallucination and obsession for the object of desire. A mental space, a desire
for something unknown, unreal… suspended “dans la tête”. The book is written
in “fragments”, like closing/opening eyes, like in a dream; but also space fragments,
each able to create and recreate something new. A man sits, obsessed by a
recurring thought (the other figure?...), and the acrobatic dance enables us to
follow his train of thought. Something comes from the flying object in The Room
by Sartre, but not all fragments must be known. The beginning is a hallucination
of the man...or maybe not: the end will be the same, only inverted, i.e. a hallucination
of the other “suspended figure” or just the audience daydreaming. The performance
employs a circular mechanical rope system, in order to create a “total stage”
concept, encompassing ground and air, while evoking a circus arena, with the
audience around the stage.

Kinowaltz is a journey of dance through the world of cinema. Starting from the
childhood dream of going inside the silver screen to live the most wonderful
adventures, we began researching the relationship between the body's movement
and the moving picture, which led us to a deconstruction of iconic images between
static and moving screens. Thus exploring a new way of looking at emblematic
films and giving the audience a new dimension on those films.

They explore the boundaries between dance, performance and theatre, in a
process of collective creation. Their work method involves superimposing
autobiographical material, mythologies, family stories or national histories, thus
creating a complex web of popular and classical culture references. They create
shows that allow the audience to travel between cultures, ages and genres, and
to build their own meaning and narrative.

Binaural / Nodal is a cultural organization devoted to local and international
cooperation in the fields of artistic and social research as privileged means of
articulation between creation, technology and the surrounding social and geographical
context. The most visible feature of its activity is the Nodar Rural Art Lab (county
of São Pedro do Sul), a program for the development of international artistic
creations in a rural context, with emphasis on sound arts and exploratory media,
followed by public performances in the region. Since 2006, the more than 100
Nodar resident artists have established interactions with the region, its geographical
and social space and its identity and memory.
Alongside, Binaural/Nodar founded, in 2011, together with six other associations,
the Tramontana Network of memory archives, which is linked to an articulated
work between mountainous areas of Southern European countries, particularly
of romance languages, from which one studies, compares and spreads cultural
materials and innovating methods for the documentation and audiovisual archive
of the aforementioned contents, with the ultimate goal of preserving the memory
of the landscape and its communities and using the documented materials as a
tool for education, self-esteem and appreciation of these mountainous territories.
Rendilhados Urbanos (”Urban Filigree”) – This project consists in applying stencils
(masks/moulds) with a typical Portuguese tile pattern on shabby or abandoned
urban spaces. For the Imaginarius Festival, the author proposed painting a “tile”
mural on a public wall in the centre of the city of Santa Maria da Feira. Repeated
application of this “tile-stencil” generates a pattern, which brings the audience in
direct contact with culturally familiar/close graphic elements. With this intervention
the author intends to value our cultural heritage and, at the same time, raise the
audience's awareness to other forms of urban expression.
It is precisely within this scope that A Vaquinha no Vouguinha, da montanha
à planície (”Miss Cow rides the Vouguinha from mountain to plain”) exhibit takes
place – a triptych of sound and audiovisual installations, whose narrative, set
somewhere between the dreamlike and the documentary, is based on the historical
fact that the Arouquesa cattle breed, from the upland regions of Gralheira, Arada
and Freita, used to be transported on railway cars from the Vouga Valley to the
coastal slaughterhouses, Santa Maria da Feira's among them.
The exhibit takes place in three of the city's structures that are associated with
the process of transporting, slaughtering and selling cattle (the old slaughterhouse
building, the railway station and a meat counter at the municipal market), where
the fact that these structures are now abandoned or practically unused lends a
delicious irony to the audiovisual return of Arouquês cattle to those places of yore.
Hopefully as delicious as the delicacies of Alvarenga Steak or Lafões Veal.

Marta Angelozzi makes site-specific abstract drawings in which lines resemble
textures, and patterns twist and stretch into landscapes. It is in the nature of such
drawings to adapt, like a second skin, to the place where they are made.
Marta enjoys the idea that lines are like thoughts, they can form or deconstruct
ideas, and at times hint something important but don't always have to form a
conclusion.
Marta Angelozzi combines the use of video with drawing and projection as tools
for experimentation and practice, by playfully animating video drawings.
Do número para a revolução (”From number to revolution”) is an intervention
stencil painting on three random walls, in the centre of Santa Maria da Feira, one
of which to be preferentially performed at night, with the help of a video projector
and a ladder, which will allow to paint directly on the wall and the projected drawing.
By creating a drawing before a live audience, Marta intends to celebrate the
moment and the place in which a drawing is made. Since life keeps us busy, it
is not easy to stop, just be or do something with no other intention than to observe
or reflect, which can bring you immense benefits.
For Imaginarius, Marta intends to share her method, by making a drawing
intervention on the walls of Santa Maria da Feira and projecting it in real time for
the audience. Space around us is valuable, and we should take time to understand
and appreciate it.
Marta Angelozzi lives and works in Lisbon where she is an active member of the
Roundabout LX, an experimental artspace in Anjos.

The Esculturas de Bolso (”Pocket Sculputures”) project is part of a wider artistic
project in which, starting from nature, and through the sculptor's intervention,
objects become something portable and of personal use, thus exploring the
interaction between public and sculpture in public space. Its first presentation/
performance happened in 2011, at the Pedvale Open-Air Art Museum, in Latvia,
within the museum's annual programme, called Stone Space: Reflection on Space.
Since then, presentations took place in 2012 at Studio Banana in Madrid, in
Guimarães, at Guimarães Noc Noc 2 and Pecha Kucha Night Guimarães vol #4,
both times within the programming of Guimarães European Culture Capital. The
performance consists of distributing a pocket sculpture to passers-by at a random
public space and the public's action results in the voluntary participation on digital
platform http://www.facebook.com/ pocketstones.pocketstones, where the owners
of a pocket sculpture can share images, photos, comments and daydreams about
how they use their own pocket sculpture. Esculturas de Bolso project intends
to perpetuate its presentation/ performance at Imaginarius 2013 in Santa Maria
da Feira and strengthen its interactivity with the various audiences, as well as
increase the number of participants in its participatory digital platform.
“The sun has set, the journey is long and the train is full. I've never dreamt of
people from around here. There are two worlds: mine, with my love, and other
people's world... I'm heading for the south.
This is one of the sentences from my diary that have been drawn on in some of
Santa Maria da Feira's trees, the words written in Braille and engraved in the tree
trunks become drawings whose lines and stains have been replaced by dots.
They are messages that have been left as in a diary; the meaning of the words
gains and loses significance, transforms itself, gets drawn and becomes tactile,
opening space for imagination.

Ar_Search is a collective founded on multidisciplinary partnerships and oriented
towards the research of sound and performing resources. Their début project
(Voyger#1 - Golden Records Series2011) was the first of a series of performances
and experimental sound installations.
Based in Santa Maria da Feira, the Teorema das Linhas project was founded
in 2010 by an industrial designer, Cristiana Henriques, and a visual artist, Ana Rita
Leite. The project intends to articulate the authors' know-how and tools in order
to process them into solutions, based on experience and lots of persistence.
Teorema das Linhas, (“Theorem of the Lines”) as a means of choosing certain
clues, started from a wide range of possibilities, thus presupposing a combination
of both concepts. Theorem, that meant “spectacle” for the Greeks, and Lines,
which covers a series of pertinent meanings for the path that the team has been
following.
The project's main concern is to promote development and the creation of
relationships between the space and the people that roam in it, thus articulating
critical thinking and potentiating learning through practice.
Peças para Piano e Bicho da Madeira (”Pieces for Piano and Woodworm”)
This performance results form the deconstruction process of a woodwormed
piano, where its resident insect colony, once amplified, acquires a privileged space
within the universe of the instrument's sound resources – a sound sculpture.
Once the piano's regular functioning and physical integrity has been compromised,
a sound object of an experimental nature is made. From the deconstruction of
an instrument another sound object takes its place, another way of listening to
the same piano, where the amplified woodworm colony, which undermined the
whole instrument by compromising its functioning and physical integrity, as
inhabitants of the very mechanism, can participate in the performance.
Tece-me (”Weave me”) is an intervention in a 19th century building, consisting
in the presentation of a set of nine looms to the causal public, in an artistic action
which aims to (re)discover the significance of the city's elements and give social
meaning to the space.
This intends to draw the spectator's attention to weaving, an activity with a long,
exclusively feminine, tradition in the County.
In an unfinished process, the community is stimulated to structure critical and
comforting thinking, thus creating the possibility of (re)living the past in a visible
present, and allowing this architectural space to gain a new identity.
Developed during the exploration process of hidden sonorities which are revealed
through a sound amplification process, the video projection intends to help the
spectator to understand the origin of those sonorities, by showing hidden details
of the instrument through a visual amplification of the source of the sound.
The performances are open to guests that compose for and interact with the
sound object and its woodworm colony, structuring short performances of various
formats in their own image.

Calados Contra a Corrente (”Quiet Against the Current”)
From the story of “caladinhos” (a famous local sweet) came the idea of creating
a travelling sound installation, where an “artificial” intervention – based on recordings
of voices of local residents – combines with a natural intervention – the sound of
the water current that crosses the park and the city centre, creating a constant
murmur, i.e. natural censorship.

The relationship between improvised and fixed theatrical performance has fascinated
performers since the dawn of theatre. The workshop is built around the idea that
a rich, rounded character based on the characteristics of each individual performer
can make a very interesting bridge crossing the gap between momentary inspiration
and well planned preparation. Taking the idea of stock characters with clearly
defined physical and psychological characteristics (like one can find in Commedia
dell arte or Japanese No theatre) and developing it further into highly individualised
characters that are capable of reacting to any given situation but are still functioning
completely within their fictional frame. The participants of the workshop will
familiarise themselves with the basics of the character building method which has
evolved from many different techniques and principles (physical and vocal group
improvisations, basics of theatrical biomechanics and butoh, specific exercises
for understanding rhythm and composition in the context of physical theatre,
basics of contact improvisation, etc.) All of the participants will be given the
possibility to present their interactive characters in public as part of a performance
and several public interventions on the festival.
Founded on 21 April, 1984, the Bismas das Acácias group was the result of a
merger of groups, namely the Acácias, the Pop's and a bunch of boys that
break danced. The name of the group was inspired by the abundance of
“Marias” in its midst (“Bis” for “repetition” + “Mas” for “Marias” = BISMAS);
and because they were from Benguela, known as the City of Acacias. The
group is currently owned by Bismas das Acácias – Acção para a Cultura e
Desenvolvimento (since November 1998).
It sees itself as one of the bulwarks of the roots of Angolan culture, through
its rural research of national folklore that is the base for the creation of its
choreographies.
This will be its third appearance in Portugal – the first was in 1995 and the
second at Expo 98.
The dances that will be performed (Koti Kolumbula, Ndungo, Ukongo, Firmino,
Cidungue, Sindeta...) portray the everyday lives of Angolans in the fields of
agriculture, hunting, leisure and cultural institutions like evamba (a school fore
male initiation among the ovimbundo people),
marriage and masked folklore, and many others.
2008), Rwanda (2011), South Africa (1999) and Namibia (1997).

interseções entre o teatro grego antigo e o teatro comunitário
By crossing the contemporary dynamics of community theatre with ancient Greek
theatre, this work intends to investigate the structure and function of the Greek
choir, with a view to developing community artistic processes.
As a primordial element which is at the root of theatre's origin, and by articulating
ethical, ideological, aesthetic and civic assumptions, the choir could represent a
powerful asset for community creation. As a theatrical convention, a character
and the fulfilment of a civic, festive theatre like the Greek had, the study of the
choir intends to confront concepts and articulate ideas that can lead to its
redemption as a base and foundation for the creative process. In order to promote
a dynamic dialogue between our ancestral traditions and present time, this research
is structured under an interdisciplinary perspective whose goal is to equip the
conceptual basis and methodological practices for theatrical work with the
community.

The Quarteto Português de Trompas was founded in 2007. Its repertoire extends

dedicated to the group. In 2010, they won 2nd prize at “24º PJM” and at the 10th
International Music Competition for “Città di Chieri”, and, in both cases, no 1st

some of which were recorded by Antena 2 and RAI.
Ósmavati present a show where the joy of Jewish music spreads to audiences
of all ages . The fusion of klezmer with other musical styles and approaches
enriches the proposal of this fun-loving quintet.
The group was founded in 2008 from the common desire of a group of friends:
to make music and have a good time. Initially made up of four clarinet players,
the group later invited two friends from percussion.
Today, Ósmavati are formed by Manuel Lemos (clarinet), José Luís Carvalho
(violin), Tiago Soares (bass clarinet and alto saxophone), Andrés Perez (guitar and
electric bass) and Leandro Teixeira (drums).
Although all of the group's members have classical training, their appreciation of
other styles, namely klezmer music, lead Ósmavati to look for new sonorities.
Klezmer, with its festive character became then the foundation of Ósmavati's
language, who also integrate in their music Balkan, Jewish, Argentinian, Irish,
Brazilian and American influences.
“Portuguese group Ósvamati has discovered how to extract pleasure from this
freedom, with their serious, challenging and innovative attitude. And so they set
out to discover Jewish musical tradition - that precious century-old heritage, also
called “ klezmer music” - in order to recreate the more festive and celebratory side
of it, in a new appropriation of high artistic value. This recreation, while respecting
the stylistic precepts of Jewish music, sometimes visits other styles and approaches
which enrich it with a touch of fusion.” - Jorge Castro Ribeiro, 2011.
The guaranteed quality of execution of Ósmavati takes the contagious joy of
Jewish with it, and reaches all audiences.
Founded in 2010, the Funk You Brass Band project is made up of musicians
from the Aveiro area whose musical training was acquired in the Aveiro, Águeda
and Jobra Conservatories and also in Aveiro University, where they met.
With a strong component of wind instruments, like saxophones and trumpets,
plus two percussionists, the Funk You Brass turns anything from Michael Jackson
to Portuguese Philharmonic Hymns into great funky beats, with incursions in Latin,
Dixie, Pop-rock and traditional Brass Band music, always with their trademark
power, liveliness, relaxation and good-humour.
The project is made up of eight musicians (three sax players, two trumpet players
and two percussionists).

‘gente com luz própria’
with a performance by “colectivo
poético silêncio da gaveta”
Imagin'Battle, an initiative by ÁGIL Lordelo do Ouro Youth Association, is a 2 on
2 Bboying (break dance) competition. The competitors will show their skills and
moves before a renowned jury. This event continues the work developed by ÁGIL
around urban art, lending greater visibility to this culture.
After all, like Oscar Wilde would have imagined, portraits do grow old. Time gives
them other meanings and, as they stand still, their movement is the way we relate
to them, the way memory operates on them within the elasticity of what, at each
given moment, they mean to us.
Founded in 2008, ÁGIL aims to diversify the cultural experiences of young people
and promote non-formal education thorough art, by organizing several activities,
such as painting and drawing workshops, exchanges and visits to shows, parties
and cultural events. It promotes the stimulation and participation of the young
people from the parish of Lordelo do Ouro, Oporto, by getting them involved in
the community's cultural, social and sporting life, thus favouring sharing and
togetherness among the youth. It intends to develop everyone's sensitivity, by
focusing their attention on various forms of artistic and cultural expression, using
art as a way of bringing the community together.
In 2010 and 2012, they organized PACS - Public Art Community Spaces, an
event that intends to diversify the experiences of various audiences that usually
stay away from these movements, relying on partners such as the Hard Club,
Armazém do Chá, Casa da Música e Serralves
(http://publicartcommunityspaces.blogspot.com/).
This association relies on occasional support from IPDJ and, since 2011, in a
partnership with INDUCAR, has provided young people with the chance to
participate in exchanges and international training. Through the Juventude em
Acção Program, it has implemented two actions: Iniciativa Juvenil MURO - Mais
um Rasgo Original (http://maisumrasgooriginal.tumblr.com), putting creative and
artistic processes in favour of the community, which allowed to rehabilitate CIJ,
a youth space where various activities are conducted daily for the young people
from Lordelo do Ouro; and the Creative Art Learning Exchange, which took place
in 2012, in Oporto, with the participation of 30 youngsters between 18 and 30
from Portugal, Greece, Germany, Slovenia and Lithuania.
ÁGIL is part of the consortium of the METAS E5G Project, financed by Programa
Escolhas and promoted by ADILO, and its work has been acknowledged by the
Oporto City Council, which awarded it, in 2012, with the Young Oporto Award.
The almost two hundred portraits created by Isabel Lhano, in more than eight
years, sound what we do with ourselves; they sound what we expected and what
actually happened or still happens. I am clearly involved in this matter because I
was portrayed twice and, while it is true that I have changed since, I see myself
ancient in those pictures, as if today, instead, meant what is timely and the possible
youth of all things, and the portraits were, by definition, the old and the obsolete.
As if it was the painting that was escaping me, and I the sincere version to be
considered.
international street theatre festival
Once the portrayed have been chosen among those that belong affectionately
to her universe, Isabel Lhano not only defends herself against indifference but also
takes a stand on behalf of the urgency of the collective. She praises her own and
seduces towards an ethics of inclusion and communion, from the full acceptance
of the other. In an open oeuvre, subject to both consolidation and illusion, what
we see the most is how the painter and those she portrays behave during the
judging passage of time. Between approximations and deviations, the collective
becomes effective or unravels. The paintings, always honest, appear, through their
techniques and compositions, as living animals that won't stop maturing.

‘o mercado’
portugal
This space is inspired by the spirit of popular Portuguese fairs (music, snacks and
drinks) and intends to be a meeting point for the 400 hundred artists or so that
participate in the festival and their audience, leading them to mingle every night
after the day's performances.
Cabine Aberta (“Open Cabin”) is a project where the two proponents leave it to
the public (subject to a pre-selection) to chose the music that will be played during
the Imaginarius nights.
In an event that turns the streets of the historical centre into a cluster of passersby with a predisposition for street art and growing creativity levels, Porta13 and
Transat provide a Stage and the tools to transform that creativity into music. This
way any visitor can become the evening's DJ for a few minutes, playing some
favourite tracks in a display of musical taste. The chosen visitors will also rely on
the assistance and a short training session by the resident DJ's.

Aiming to promote and develop artistic activity among young people, Rotary
Clube da Feira will organize the “Imaginarius na Rua” drawing contest.
Young people will be encouraged to observe and register the city's historical centre
as an urban space, with its own heritage and hidden corners, but also the people,
the Imaginarus shows and the mood of the moment.
