QUICK PICTURE OF CANTANHEDE: FLAVORS OF EARTH AND SEA Cantanhede is the biggest Municipality in the District of Coimbra, and it is situated in the centre of a geographical triangle of notorious economical importance, in each vertex of which you can find the cities of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz, as well as the district centre. Those who visit the Municipality of Cantanhede encounter an enormous range of experiences through direct contact with nature, which stimulates with its richness and diversity or in the social intercourse with a socio-cultural existence, united around the references and patrimonial values. Picture 1 - City of Cantanhede The Bairrada region has the best roast pig in the delicacy of their rich culinary tradition and the wine of Cantanhede the most precious nectar of the demarcated region. 2. QUICK PICTURE OF COIMBRA The city of Coimbra has a mystique all of its own, the result of a past full of relevant facts and also the memories of many tens of thousands of Portuguese who, even today scattered across the country or across borders, reminiscent of the early years here past, when enrolled in the University, typically carefree times, mirth and hopes. Although it served as the nation's capital during the High Middle Ages, it is better-known for its university, the University of Coimbra, which, established in 1290, is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world. Picture 2 - City of Coimbra One of the most important urban centres in Portugal (after the much larger Lisbon Metropolitan Area and Porto Metropolitan Area), Coimbra plays a central role in the interior of the country. It is the principal centre in the Centro region, and seat of the District of Coimbra and the Baixo Mondego subregion. There are many archaeological structures which date to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, such as its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra served as the capital of Portugal (from 1139 to about 1260) still remain. During the Late Middle-Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural centre, with the foundation of the University of Coimbra in 1290. The university, one of the oldest in Europe, apart from attracting many European and international students, is visited by tourists for its monuments and history. 3 3. AND IF YOU HAVE A FEW MINUTES… DO NOT MISS IF YOU VISIT CANTANHEDE, DO NOT MISS… Marquês de Marialva Plaza Where you can see the equestrian statue, very vivid in its proportions and details, was made by Celestino Alves André, a prestigious sculptor from Cantanhede, and is installed on a plinth of considerable dimensions, in the Praça Marquês de Marialva. Picture 3 - Marquês de Marialva Plaza In this plaza you also will find the town hall recently refurbished, this building is lodged at the former 16th-century palace of the Marquis of Marialva, and the church of the Convent of Our Lady of the Conception, founded in 1675. 9 And, on the other side, the mother church of Cantanhede (classified building of historical interest), probably founded in the time of Count D. Sisnado, in the XI century, the Mother Church of Cantanhede was submitted to successive changes which resulted, in the middle of the XVI century, in the dimension and architectonic lines that it currently displays. The external lines the church are sober, drawing attention to the baroque style doorway and the tower which is connected to it through the north side. IF YOU VISIT COIMBRA, DO NOT MISS… University of Coimbra Known as the "city of students", Coimbra developed into an important cultural centre, mainly because of the University of Coimbra founded in 1290. The university is one of the oldest in Europe and due to its monumental buildings and history attracts tourists from around the world. Actually the city of Coimbra is the intellectual and spiritual centre of Portugal. Have a look at the Biblioteca Joanina (library) and the Jardim Botânico (garden). Picture 4 - University of Coimbra Beyond the university, Coimbra has much else to offer the visitor. Accessing the old part of the city through the Arco de Almedina, we find two cathedrals known as Sé Velha (old cathedral) and Sé Nova (new cathedral) referring to their respective ages, and though the ‘new’ one dates back to the 17th century its senior was founded in 1170. Regarding the old cathedral, a guided tour of the interior and cloisters is generally available from a willing student in return for a tip, however the décor tends to be quite simple and restrained in comparison to other churches. Coimbra is divided into two distinct areas: • Alta (upper town): Is the older part, which is entered through the Arco de Almedina, a gateway that brings back memories of the Arab occupation, since "Medina" means city in Arabic. The upper town consists of steep narrow streets, where the "republics" (typical communal student residences) are to be found, as well as some of the city´s most important buildings Sé Velha (Old Cathedral), Sé Nova (New Cathedral), the University and the Casa de Sub-Ripas, a mansion with an impressive Manueline doorway. • Baixa (lower town): By the river, where most of the city is commercial activity is concentrated. 1
