AOSpine Advances Course, November 12–13, 2010
Tomar, Portugal
Goal of the course
The AOSpine AOSpine Course—Advances in the Management of Spinal Trauma will elevate current concepts and
principles to an advanced level and address controversial topics as a integrated approach to understanding spinal
trauma and its state-of-the-art treatment. We picked challenging issues involving the whole spine from the occiput
down to the sacrum. Some specific problems will also be pointed like the use of minimal invasive tecniques or
spine trauma in structural bone deficit.
Target participants
This course is targeted at surgeons with 3 to 10 years of experience in spine surgery, who are aiming to further
improve their knowledge and/or specialization in the management of spinal trauma and specific techniques.
Course objectives
After the course, the participants should
•
•
•
•
•
List arguments for a variety of diagnostic pathways in challenging trauma situations
Identify a rationale for differences in thoracolumbar care delivery
Investigate and discuss surgical and nonoperative decision making for thoracolumbar fractures
Describe concise assessment and treatment options for fractures in the lower lumbar and sacral spine
Outline indications for surgical intervention and suggested treatment principles for injuries in the cervical spine
and junctional cervical trauma
• Apply adequate and state-of-the-art techniques to treat spinal trauma
• Formulate assessment principles and standards of care with regard to spinal cord injuries
Course description
Challenges in the management of spinal trauma have produced some of the major breakthroughs in spine care,
especially with regard to implant design. While some problem areas have been successfully
addressed, new areas of care concern continue to emerge.
This course will address different topics in spinal trauma such as the
• Management of polytraumatized patients
• The emerging role of minimally invasive spine surgery
• The treatment of patients with impaired bone structure
• Challenges in spinal trauma
• Complications
