Mensagem do
Embaixador
It is my great pleasure and honour to invite you to this first
edition of the Embassy´s newsletter. It is a delight for us to
reach this point where many friends, colleagues and Diaspora
members have joined this mission in developing a newsletter
that is able to reach out to different audiences in and out of
Brazil. This is a great milestone for this Embassy which has
been in operation since 2006.
Embaixada. É um prazer para nós chegar a
este ponto onde muitos amigos, colegas e
membros da diáspora juntaram-se a missão
de desenvolvimento deste folheto que terá
a possibilidade de chegar aos diferentes
públicos dentro e fora do Brasil.
República Federativa do Brasil, S.E.
Since its inception, the Embassy, which is Kenya´s first
diplomatic Mission in whole of Latin America, has witnessed
the opening up of new opportunities in Kenya – Brazil relations.
Both countries have exchanged high level visits, with the then
President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva visiting Kenya in July, 2010 and the Minister
for Foreign Affairs Hon. Moses Wetang’ula of Kenya visiting
Brazil in September, 2010. Further, the two countries have
had a successful Joint Commission for Cooperation which
has laid down the framework of cooperation, culminating in
exchange visits at various levels by different technical teams
in the public and private sectors.
This past year, Kenya went through an important period
in its history with the ushering in of a new Constitution
which promises to bring about many changes including the
development of an enabling environment for the business and
trade sectors; more efficiency and transparency in the public
sector service delivery and also devolve power to the regions
while establishing a bicameral parliament. The implementation
of the new Constitution has begun and the country is braced
for major achievements.
Kenya is pursuing a long term developmental strategy, the Vision
2030 which aims at transforming the country into a newly
industrialized and a middle-income country providing a high
quality life to all its citizens by the year 2030. Further, Kenya has
lots of business and investment opportunities and the Embassy
is always ready to provide relevant information to prospective
investors and business persons. In addition, Kenya is a preferred
tourist destination with pristine beaches and a magnificent
coastline, the mount Kenya, the Great Rift Valley, award winning
`best undiscovered Golf Destinations` in 2008/09 and many
wonders of Nature that are just waiting for you.

Kenya –The Story
Quênia - A história
In the beginning, in the land not too far away, right in the heart
of Africa, was Kenya. So beautiful was this land, that it quickly
became the world´s favorite Safari destination, and has remained
so up to this day. The leading economy in East and Central Africa,
Kenya is the gateway to the region. And that is a good thing
too, because Kenyans are a happy and pleasant people who are
genuinely always ready to be of assistance. Kenya, Hakuna Matata.

Kenya´s new
Constitution
to boost
trade and
investment in
Kenya
August, 2010
Kenyans voted in a new Constitution
during a referendum held on 4th August
2010. On 27th August, 2010, H.E. Mwai
Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya,
promulgated the new Constitution formally
declaring it to have taken effect.
On the economic front, the new Constitution
will boost trade and investment as
it contains provisions that create an
enabling environment for the flourishing
of business. The Constitution provides
the framework for the transformation of
Kenya into a middle income economy
in line with the VISION 2030 strategy. It
also ushered in an era of tightly checked
devolved governments that should see
businesses prosper and set the stage
for long-term economic growth. This has
helped raise Kenya´s business profile
raising the level of demand for goods and
services in the economy and unlocking
new investment opportunities.
President Kibaki waves the New Constitution to
Kenyans after he promulgated it on 27th August,
2010
with investors counting on the new law
to provide an era of better governance.
The new law also saw the strengthening
of the Shilling-Kenya’s currency, and
buoyed the stock market, which are both
positive indicators for economic growth.
Kenya’s long term economic growth is
hinged on sustainable political, economic
and social reforms which is what the
new Constitution offers. The promulgation
of the Constitution brought a new era
of enhanced investor rights backed by
stronger administrative institutions, all
geared at boosting confidence among
investors since it removes previous
concerns over the high level of political
risk in investing in the country. As a
result of renewed investor confidence, the
economy is forecast to grow by about 5
percent in 2011. The Constitution also
lays a firm foundation for future growth
by addressing the sensitive issues of
land ownership, equitable distribution of
economic resources, corruption, political
patronage and tribalism. This is expected
to translate into employment creation
and improvement of household incomes,
With the devolution of power and resources
to counties and the provision of incentives
under the equalization programme, the net
effect is expected to trigger development
of a new cluster of industrial and business
centers outside the main economic towns
of Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu
and Eldoret. This will witness an exodus
of workforce and businesses to the new
business units at the counties.
The Constitution is also expected to
achieve a perspective of good governance
and instill in the population confidence in
the Judiciary. The creation of a Supreme
Court has given hope that a vibrant
legal system will be put in place. The
Industrial Court has been entrenched in
the Constitution and given the status of the
High Court which has brought much relief
and expectation that employment and
labour relations matters will be treated
with the deserved degree of seriousness.
Positive labour relations play a significant
role in creating industrial peace, which is
vital for productivity and the performance
of the economy.
Lastly, the provision for dual citizenship
will enable Kenyans who as a result of
acquiring the citizenship of another country
ceased to be citizens, regain their status on
application. Kenya stands to benefit from
increased foreign direct investments from
Kenyans in the Diaspora who will now
enjoy equal property rights.
Nova constituição Quêniana para impulsionar o
comércio e os investimentos
August, 2010
Os Quenianos votaram uma nova Constituição
durante referendo realizado em 04 de
agosto de 2010. Em 27 de agosto de 2010,
S.E. Mwai Kibaki, o presidente da República
do Quênia, promulgou a nova Constituição
formalmente declarando seu efeito. No
plano econômico, a nova Constituição irá
impulsionar o comércio e os investimentos,
uma vez que contém disposições que criam
um ambiente propício para o florescimento
do negócio. A Constituição fornece o
honestidade, integridade e responsabilidade
na vida pública são claramente definidos.
A corrupção será posta sob controle
Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu e Eldoret. Isto irá
testemunhar um êxodo da força de trabalho
para as novas unidades de negócios do
país. É também esperado que com a
Constituição se alcance uma perspectiva de
boa governança e promoção de confiança
da população no Judiciário. Ela também tem
uma provisão para a dupla cidadania que
permite que quenianos que, como resultado
da aquisição da cidadania de outro país,
deixaram de ser cidadãos possam recuperar
o status de aplicação.

cooperation on scientific and technical
cooperation, to be facilitated through
bilateral agreements. This is critical for the
agricultural sector and is also part of the
reforms the sector has been undergoing
The team is optimistic that such reforms
will create competiveness for the Kenyan
agribusiness products, through cuttingedge technologies developed through
comprehensive research and development
programs.
The need for legal, regulatory and
institutional reforms in the agricultural
sector was necessitated by the existence
of too many pieces of legislations, creating
the need to have consolidated piece of
legislation and consolidated research
system was deemed critical to realization
of proposed development goals of Vision
2030.
Solutions for the Low Carbon Economy
was the major theme of the event, which
led to discussions well beyond the use
of ethanol as a motor fuel to a variety of
new trends and uses emerging around the
world, for ethanol and sugarcane itself.
These included the growing use of
bioelectricity generated from burning
sugarcane bagasse in high efficiency
boilers; to the increased use of ethanol
in the production of bioplastics and
progress in the development of so-called
second generation ethanol; advances in
flex-fuel technology for motor vehicles
and in biotechnology; and leading to the
production of bio-hydrocarbonetos from
sugarcane, including diesel, gasoline, jet
fuel and fine chemicals.
The Summit was of importance for Kenya
particularly in view of the electric power
supply in the country falling far below
the demand, and the country looking at
other alternatives like bio-energy to satisfy
the citizen’s demand; targeting to tap the
energy from Jetropha, a plant grown in
arid and semi-arid lands which is seen as
the best source of bio-diesel across the
country, and also ethanol generated from
sugar cane.
The event, now in its third edition, attracted
more than a thousand participants and
120 speakers from all continents
