Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Associated Professor, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil (19972001). Led complex multi-disciplinary initiatives that mobilized more than 300 people from corporations,
non-profits, academia and governments to design a regional strategy for the conservation and
development of the natural resources in northeastern Brazil, the driest and poorest region in the country.
Designed the first country’s undergraduate program in environmental science with strong emphasis on
corporate sustainability. Funded the most important and recognized regional environmental NGO
(CEPAN). Taught undergraduate (vertebrate zoology, ecology and population ecology) and graduate
courses on environmental policy, ecology, biogeography, and evolution. Advised graduate students on
environmental policy.
