Ana Sofia Clímaco Monteiro de Oliveira Universidade Federal do Paraná Palestra / Lecture: Aluminização de ligas de Ni Aluminization of Ni based alloys Resumo da palestra / Summary of the lecture: Pack aluminizing is a very competitive coating process being used in small component with a wide range of geometries. It is particularly attractive to protect components exposed to high temperature oxidation or carburizing environments. However, applications that require protection against hydrogen permeation and corrosion in hydrocarbons and sulphurous atmospheres have also been mentioned in the literature. Pack aluminizing is a thermochemical treatment involving the substitutional diffusion of Al so that the surface is enriched in Al. The aluminizing procedure involves a cementation treatment followed by oxidation above 1100ºC. To accomplish the required performance an oxide layer of alpha-alumina has to be formed and all other allotropic forms of alumina avoided. Pack aluminizing processing parameters and the role of the activity of Al are presented. The microstructural architecture and subsequent performance of components, depends on the inward diffusion of Al or outward diffusion of Ni. Also, the chemical composition of the Ni alloy has an important role on the formation of the main microstructural features, including the inter-NiAl aluminide layer and should always be addressed during the design of the processing procedures. The microstructure is a key factor to obtain a high performance seeing that coatings are continuously reacting with the atmosphere and with the alloy therefore an Al reserve is require to maintain the Al2O3 layer.
